Coffee...and, for July, 19, 2006. We came from over here: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/627757/
Come on in, sit down, and as a special treat, I will personally serve you today, is it coffee, or tea? No cyber treats yet, waiting for someone to put something on the counter. Hey, let's count the money in the cyber coffee can, until some treats show up.

Good Morning DG land.... Waiting on the coffee and letting cats in/out. At 4:30 am it is 80 degrees here. Whew!
Mornin' all. Kept car today so had to get up at 4:15. Still drinking coffee and figure out what is on the menu for today. Haven't even taken my walk around the yard looking at pretties. More coffee
Good morning,
Woke up at 5:30 with a headache - likely another side effect of that medicine. Also have an awful taste in my mouth. No more of it. I quit.And I make a mental note not to accept a prescription for that one again.
Anyway, at 6, I decided I was too hungry to go back to sleep; so I got up to stay.
Bonnie - it looks as though you've got starting the thread down pat. Good for you.
Dianne - I'll have some of the lemon cheesecake for a second breakfast. Thanks.
Hi podster. Have we met before? Pretty hot where you are. Up here, we finally had some relief from the heat last night and it's downright chilly this morning but it supposed to be almost 30C before the day is over.
cece - you keep planting the seed about that pool and you'll get it eventually.
Bonnie - I'll have to see if I can fix the errors I saw before you find them. LOL
Well a friend will pick me up for aquafit in about 30 minutes. Still don't know how I'm getting to the Food Cupboard to volunteer - may have to have them send someone for me. The volunteer who lives on my street is at her cottage and another who lives nearby didn't expect to have a car - will get driven in by her DH, but earlier than I want to go. I could walk in 45 minutes, but it promises to be rather warm. Another friend will pick me up there because the two of us will be playing viola duos in church on Sunday and we need to practice.
Well, time to check that the windows we had open overnight are closed up and the AC is set, but not set too cold so as to use too much energy.
Have a good day everyone.
BBL
Ann
Hi all. Went for my walk to look at all my little pretties and brought enough to fill 4 vases. The Rudbeckia hirta sure stands up well in a vase. I love fesh cut flowers all around.
Vi-ann my husband has known for 5 years that I wanted a pond if I ever lived where I had a yard of my own. But you're right I will have to keep plugging at it Subtle, Subtle.
I know one thing on my agenda today. Get a new hose! This one I bought as an extension to reach my farthest bed was a cheapy that is light weight. It kinks up on my constantly and has begun to leak massively. Now when its hot thats not a bad thing that I get all wet but the wated water is another issue that and plain water is one thing but I used that Miracle-gro liquifeed yesterday and I don't want to get miracle-gro. I don't need to grow any more in the direction I've taken to growing the past couple years. Its h--- to be happy, ya know????
I am up and already went out for my walk around the gardens. Still working on my 1st cuppa coffe and everything outside needed watering something awful. Just about to wake the boys up and off we go. They will get dropped off at DM's house as she watches them while Im at work. Will check in a little later--maybe at work if Im not too busy. ;)
Hope everyone has a splendid day!
Katy
morning all! everybody seems to have so much acomplished. i feel like a slug a bug. what i want to start today calls for lots of energy. redong one of my rock walls[border] the rocks i used were to small so have to replace them. this way i can move it out a little further. think DH will notice?
stings are doing fine. i can feel the one behind the ear yet. went there last night to fix the railroad tie i knocked over and the screen door that came off track.
kidneyguy i've never had blueberry grunt please send a piece this way! if none left lemoncheese cake is also very good! DH doesn't like that. thankyou.
violaann get better soon.
hi podster 80 already. cool here so far. we can try to send you some.
cece girl keep filling the vases. i got one of those cheap hoses alsobut it's in a stationary spot. it's weird how it moves and kinks when the water is shut off.
katym have a good day at work.
hope everybody gets the weather they need. vicki
Ahhhhh, cool air drifting in from outside! Instead of the other way around....what a relief. No rain though.
Just found out that one of the bargain plants I picked up at the garden center isn't a perennial at all, altho it was in with others and had no tag, it's a darn fuschia! And DH dug it in at the edge of the carpet of roses bed so I have to undig it and put it in a pot. I think he thought it was a sedum (?)and he moved my lady's mantles around, without checking. Tell ya, I gotta watch him like a hawk! I'll prune the fuschia back and put it in a hanging planter and give it a good dose of hurry-up-and-grow and see if I can coax another bloom out of it.
Everything else is due for a MG bath today too, I like the new kits they came out with with the premixed bottles and the sprayer. Very handy but makes for more material for the land fills with the disposable bottles.
Couldn't sleep last night and was up reading until about 2:30. Need to call DD and see if she wants to have lunch with me and DIL today. She wasn't home last night and it's useless to leave a message with her DH because he either scrambles it or forgets to tell her. She's getting more grooming business now, so her day off from her other job isn't always a day off.
I'll have a little of the blueberry grunt, a smidgeon of lemon cheesecake, and a slice of the apple pie for dessert, thank you so much!
I need to tackle that peach pie today, although DH won't be home for dinner as his work group is going on some kind of outing. Last year the spouses were invited, they must be tightening their belts or trimming the budget. Doesn't bother me, they are very clique-ish, and I end up sitting by myself, while DH wanders off and chats up everybody else. I should have brought a book along. I swear, if we hadn't been sitting in the middle of a lake, I would have called a cab and gone home. It's not like I'm shy, I'll talk to any one!
He's pretty much a social dud, if I convince him to go to some function that doesn't involve his interests, he drags his feet like a little kid. He'd think life was perfect if he never had to talk to anyone but another car freak, and he could just sit in front of his computer or putter in the garage. He's pretty good in other respects, and I'm too old to start over so I guess I'll keep him. OK, that's enough complaining.
All right, here's a ~~~~ for everyone, you know I've read every post so I'm up to date, just not up to responding individually. Out to the garden with my tools and the hose!
Sheila
Good morning all, DGD and I had trouble sleeping, I think it was after 2 when we finally went to sleep. I was up early, to do a last minute pick up that accumulated last night. DTW is due here any minute. Have green beans and corn on cooking, and need to make that peach cobbler. We are also going to my friends to see her daylilies. So it will be a whirlwind today. At any rate, I plan on checking in from time to time. If I don't respond individually today, forgive me, but know that I am reading and keeping up.
Have a good productive day. It is already hot here, so it will be a good "pool day".
cece, I'm with you about the cheap hoses. They are just fine if you can lay them out and not move them round, but they do kink at the first twitch! DH asked me what I wanted for my birthday and I told him "good hoses!!!" I'll use the cheap ones in the places I can leave them and the good ones for moving around. He liked the idea of getting off easy with something that he wanted as well!
I have done my morning 'ride' about (using the golf cart), then watered most of the things that needed it, fertilized the orchids and epis. Now on to the last of the watering, and then off to the craft room to play with making paper for my Christmas cards. I finished Mom's paper yesterday. *So* glad to be through with lime green paper. It will be beautiful as a finished card, but I've been working with it for quite awhile, and I'm ready for a change. Mine will be a rich yellow, and I'm sure I'll be tired of *it* by the time I'm through. At least it is all done in an air conditioned room!
Some where in here I have to vaccinate all the furkids, apply a fresh dose of Frontline and give the dogs their Heartgaurd. Everyone is due everything (3 cats and 2 dogs). That will probably wait until tomorrow morning so I can do it before it gets too hot to be safe for the dogs. (It is best to avoid letting them get too hot as the vaccs can actually make them run a low grade fever for a few hours.)
I'll BBL

Quick help, I need that pie crust recipe using the oil. Drat, know I wrote it down, now can't find it.
I don't have it, did Maria post it in the Recipes forum...you can go to her name and see what threads she has started, might be there...
Ves522 you've got D-mail.?????????????
Hi all
Not much news today.
Defoe here's the recipe ... it's on July 8th
pie crust recipe
1 1/2 c flour
3/4 teas. salt
1/2 c oil
3 Tbsp water
sugar to sprinkle on top
Mix flour, salt, and oil with pastry blender. Add water and mix with hands or spoon (I used spoon) until ball forms. Divide and roll between sheets of wax
paper. Peel off top paper and invert pie crust into pan. Peel off second sheet of paper and prick bottom of crust with a fork. Add filling and top crust.
Cut vents and sprinkle with sugar. (I was concerned with the pricking of the bottom crust, but the gal who gave it to me insisted that she does it no matter
what kind of pie!)
Morning everyone!
I've been up quite a while, but busy in the kitchen. Yesterday I cooked almost half a bushel of apples and ran them through my food mill this morning so I can start cooking them down for apple butter and then can them. I'm experimenting with cooking the pulp down in the oven rather than on the stovetop. Have 4 more huge pots of them (slightly over one and a half bushels) to do over the next few days so I'll probably hate the sight of an apple soon!
We had terrible storms in the night and my truck windows were down. What a soggy mess inside it this morning.
A stray cat has been around off and on since I've been here. Small female, light grey shorthair. I finally started feeding her 2-3 days ago because she was eating apples and scraps out of the compost pile. I think she must have been the house cat here and was just abandoned. She's very friendly and likes to be petted. She will be the barn cat, probably, although when I can afford it I will take her to the Vet for shots.
Have a great day!
Okay, I think I am ready for the sis and grandkids. Have cooked fresh green beans, and corn, made cup cakes for the kids and a peach cobbler for anyone who wants it. I haven't done my morning walk, and it will soon be noon, so better get out and get that done.
Thanks I01 for that recipe, it was the one I wanted. Knew it wasn't too far back on the posts, but didn't have time to look. It is now in my recipe box, and is safe and sound.
Will be back later to see what's going on.
Sometime back I posted about a friend that has been accused of Child Molestation. I want to tell you people that live other places what kind of foolishness goes on in the Ozarks. I was talking to him this morning. He said the first thing he ask for was a lie detector test. The police refused to allow one. The daughter from the second marriage that made the allegation denied it for several days along with the older step daughter. His lawyer has ask for some kind of testing on the daughter and the sheriff refuses to go along. At this point in addtition to having lost his home and bussiness to the tornado and the cost of rebuilding that, it has cost him over $15,000 to defend himself. Guess what. ??? His 12 yr old daughter from his first marriage is currently living with him. Can you see allowing that situation if you thought the man was a child molester. They have never referred charges to the prosecutor and his bail was set at about $3000 if I recall on something that usually will run $50-$100K. They told him prove he did not do anything. Isn't that lovely. You hear the mouth peices always saying "innocent until proven guilty in a court of law". Weather he did are not I sure do not know for sure. I find it hard to believe he would. But that is not the point. The point is the justice system stinks.

Good morning. My breakfast oatmeal is cooking, the sprinklers in the yard are going already, hubby is fed and off to work, Breezy has had his medicine (no coughs this morning although I don't have the morning run up the hill for comparison because he was waiting for his breakfast). I will have to ride him to tell if the cough is completely gone. He used to cough when he put his head down and started to eat, none of that anymore. YES, progress!
Wow, Podster, 80 degrees at 4:30am! Too hot for me for that early in the morning knowing how it will be by mid afternoon, and I like it warm. Humidity, or lack of it, makes a difference. I don't remember who was wishing for hot temps and a long growing season, but that doesn't tell the whole story. We really struggle in these dry climates to get enough water into our plants. The roots can't keep up with what is lost through the leaves. My tall phlox are one of the first things to look stressed. And in the vegie garden the squash leaves get looking like limp umbrullas and the corn leaves roll to conserve moisture. I try not to let them get dry but sometimes the weather gets ahead of me, especially if there is wind.
Darius, I have made apple butter in the oven, so I think using it as a dehydrator would work ok. You don't have to watch it as carefully as on the stove top. My apple butter recipe has a bit of vinegar as well as the spices and sugar. It sure does make the house smell good. Takes about 24 hours to get it to the right consitancy but you can do other things and even sleep while it cooks down. I turn the oven down for the night then up again in the daytime when I'm around to monitor it. 250 was the highest temp if I remember right. I hope your truck seats dry before you need to use the truck. Of course a cool damp seat might feel good on a hot day. Sorry to read about the damaged art work. Is there any way to clean it up and restore it?
Ves, or I guess I should call you vicki, I think taking that rock wall apart and moving it just a little is a good plan. You might have to make it a bit lower to make up for the added length.
My hubby is leaving in the morning to go to a meeting over on the Oregon coast. He isn't looking forward to the drive, but is looking forward to cooler temperatures. He says he doesn't care what it is doing as long as it is cool. Last weekend he got too much sun while out chopping thistles and spent the rest of the day in the shade.
Got to go now.
Hello all, Dianne i'm drooling.. ohh it all sounds so good... i don't buy extras for baking not in budget what budget.lol.. and house is already like oven.. i love to cook and bake always did for yrs, just not much last 3....since alone no use to.. now Jessica has left to..Have great day all.. blessings..
Twyla
Hi everyone
Well, I'm back to see what everyone has been up to. Had a bad night last night and was grumpy early so figured I'd come back when I was in a better humor.
Defoe, so glad that was the pie crust recipe you wanted. I'm always collecting them, but as you know ... don't do a whole lot of baking since the DH doesn't eat sweets. I'd have that thing staring at me and that would never do. :-)
Darius, what does your kitty think about the new one hanging round or have they met each other yet? That will be nice to have an inside and outside pet. Sorry about the wet seats in your truck.
Hi Twyla, glad you're feeling better now.
Mary, that's great news about your horse. Maybe he's finally on the mend now. :-)
Speaking of animals ... Susan if you're lurking ... how is Snowcone doing today?
Gosh, I just realized that Ernie and Maria haven't checked in lately either. They're probably all having such a good time they haven't *even* thought about us here at DG. LOL
Hmm, and when is sarv coming home? If she doesn't get back soon I think I'll carry the ice cream torch a while. I love helping out my friends any way I can. I could probably force myself to eat a bowl of ice cream along with some of that blueberry grunt and a smigin of that peach pie? That's why I never bake. Don't need to. ;)
Ok, will check back later.
Okay, I have had a very tough afternoon, DS and DGD and Sisters grandkids have been in the pool. Just came in sitting talking, it will soon be time to start the grill. Everything is done, except grilling the burgers and hot dogs. It is 97 here, and that pool sure felt good. I will let you know how the peach cobbler tastes, it sure looks good.
BBL
Ok, who took the cool weather we were promised? It is a little cooler, only 88 today. Still hummid though. Supposed to be much better by the weekend and thats what I'm looking forward to. We had a doozy of a storm last night. Very high winds and rain. DH spent a few hours at work during the night to clear downed trees from some roads. Lost power for a couple of hours.
Defoe - Your doing a great job with the daily! Thank you! Hope you're having a good day with your family.
Ann - Hope you are feeling better.
CeCe - Congrats on winning your froggie! Hope DH lets you have your pond soon.
Vicki - I once re-arranged a room of furniture while DH was at work. He never even noticed. Hope your rock wall comes out good.
M5 - My DH is a memer of the "Social dud" club as well. He is a hard worker, so when he slowes down, he usually falls asleep. He is into the car thing too. His current project is a 57 chevy. It will be a while before it gets done though.
Mary - Glad Breezy is doing better.
Hope - glad you are doing better
~~~~ to everyone I missed. Heat and lack of sleep have not had me in the best of moods the last couple of days. Maybe tonight I can catch up on a few zzz's.
See ya later!
Hi, just taking a quick break from weeding in the vegie patch while I try to get the irrigation water to run where I want it to go. I came up for some lunch and to change the yard sprinklers, hubby came home to get some paperwork and fielded 3 phone calls while he was here. He doesn't work by the hour, just has an annual contract with the county for his services, and is out of his office a lot but almost always reachable by cell phone. As long as he keeps up with the work he can take a bit of time for himself here and there which he rarely does. He is not a workaholic, but has set a high standard for himself and his job. His boss, the DA, is pleased with his work.
Ummm, ice cream and peach pie! That sounds good. Next break I'll have some, and might be ready to take a turn in Defoe's pool by then. It was 87 the last time I checked.
Besides weeding I need to get Patch out for a short ride so I had better not be sitting here. ~~~bye,
This is Maria, hi everyone, weather is still lovely and cool. Had a great lunch at the home of Linda's parents home they are just as nice as can be
Ernie is helping a friend and Linda had to go to work today right now I am all alone thought I take advantage and send you a post.
Yesterday we had a wonderful drive over a very winding road through the mountains along the bay, just gorgous
Ernie has three Goldens, Gabby, the oldest is a very sweet girl and so is th baby Jenny but Andy the boy can be something like Samson but much better behaved than Samspn ever is
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~to every one
Yay Maria! Glad you seem to be having a great time. Many years ago I had a Golden Retriever. She was great except when there was a thunderstorm. Too many chewed door jambs and I gave her to a Vet.
Thanks to Defoecat's help, I now have a few pints of green beans in the canner, the beans were a gift from my neighbor this afternoon, along with a few other veggies. Apples continue to take a long time to cook down and I'm only on the first 1/4. My fault, too much liquid in this first batch. Oh well, they WILL cook down. I think I will go back to doing what MaryE does, use the oven overnight! At least that way I don't have to worry about scorching.
Have a great evening everyone!
IO1- Is that flour in the Pie crust recipe just plain all purpose flour?
Hi everyone ... just checking in before I head off to the shower. Just finished watering, and I feel like 1 big mosquito bite. yuck! Guess it's because we finally got some rain.
Katy, I'm so sorry but I really don't know about that pie crust recipe. It was posted earlier this month by sarv, and I just thought it looked good so copied it into my recipe box. Defoe used it today, though, so maybe she'll see this and respond. She sure had me drooling this afternoon when I spoke to her. I think it hadn't long been out of the oven ... oh yum! :-)
Darius, sounds like you've been busy. That apple butter sure does sound good to me.
Mary so glad Breezy's cough is better tonight.
Suzie glad you got some rain, but sorry you had to be without power! Hope you get some cooler weather. I think it was a wee bit cooler here today ... maybe?
Ann, hope today was a better day for you. Good luck with all your beautiful web pages. :-)
Well, don't think I can stand it any longer. Got to hit the shower! LOL
~Elaine~
katym, I used self rising flour and didn't add the salt. If it was plain flour, I would think you would have to add baking powder, and that wasn't listed. I usually don't use a lot of salt, so just left it out. BTW, it was very good, flaky and browned real good.
Will come back later to try to comment some.
I was considering making a cherry pie (DS's favorite). Thought I might try that crust but wanted to double check if I have all the ingredients. I think I will try the same as Defoe as I have plenty of self rising flour and not much all purpose in stock.
We had dinner at McDonalds tonight. I was too exhausted from the day to cook and everyone was starving when I got home and I had to go out anyway since we were out of milk (we go through 5 gallons of milk a week in this house - can you believe that?) Any way I just stopped and got everyone something and now we are sitting at home fat and happy! LOL.
Glad to see some of you are getting some relief from the heat...not here. It was 101* here this afternoon. checked the thermometer. From the looks of the fig tree today I will likely have to go out tomorrow after work and pick at least another dish pan full as they are ripening quickly
Good evening everyone,
A couple of people have asked about my DH. Thanks so much for asking --- as far as I can tell, he seems to be doing a lot better. The visiting nurse who came yesterday told him that his feet were looking good and so far, he hasn't had any adverse effects from the anti-biotic. He has another appointment with the podiatrist tomorrow, so we should know a bit more after that. He IS getting a bit "stir crazy" though, so he came to pick me up and we stopped at the library and at Home Depot to look at water dispensers. (Our well water isn't too bad for washing once it goes through the water softener, but it tastes like a keg of nails has been soaking in it for a month!)
Bonnie, please tell your DH the above and that we thank him for asking. Please also say hi to your sister for us.
katy, I make a version of that pie crust with olive oil sometimes and all-purpose flour is what I use. (King Arthur unbleached, to be specific.) I never even thought to try it with the self-rising flour and piecrust in general doesn't require baking powder.
I01, hope you feel better tomorrow! At least since you got some rain, you shouldn't have to over-exert yourself trying to get everything watered and/or worry about all your plants.
Dianne, thanks for all the yummy cyber treats (especially the cheesecake!) I think I just put on about 20 more pounds that I don't need ---- good thing they're only cyber pounds!
V-ann, how are you doing now? I hope that you don't have any more side effects from that medication. By the way, I thought that your web page looked very good (even if I was out-voted on which color background was best). I've been working a lot on one of mine lately and know just how much work it takes!
darius, I'm so glad that you're helping that poor cat. People who treat pets like inanimate objects and just toss them out with the trash really drive me nuts.
oz, sorry about your friend. You're right, things do seem kind of screwed up in that situation.
cece, good for you on winning that prize and good luck in getting your pond one of these days.
Maria, glad that you checked in and that you're still really enjoying your vacation.
Hi Twyla, you sound a bit better today.
Hi and goodnight to Sheila, suzieq, tgif, pod, vicki, Mary and all of you others who check in on the coffee klatch from time to time.
E. McCool
Good night folks.
I'll have to go back and catch up on what happened today a bit later as I've not even peeked in until now.
I'm feeling great. And I stopped taking the meds. I'll take them to pharmacy tomorrow for disposal.
Bummed a ride to Aquafit this morning and home again
Bummed a ride to the Food Cupboard. Started going over end of June data - looking for discrepancies. Successor doesn't really have a handle on that. He has a semi-annual report due from the end of June.
Violist friend picked me up there and drove me homw about 3. We spent until about 5 playing through viola duos to decide what to play on Sunday in church. She stayed for dinner - DH is in Calgary. They didn't finish my car - said some garbage about seized bolts which tells me that they didn't have it as far apart yesterday as they indicated. What do they expect on a 9 yr old car that goes through the salt slop every winter? Anyway, they have it for me by late morning tomorrow or give me a rental.
It was close to 8 before I got to the computer. Caught up on a variety of things and then started working on the individaul pages for the second page of my Hosta site. They are pretty well done now. tomorrow I will have to fix a broken link in the first set and proof them all before uploading them; so I should have the site pretty well finished tomorrow.
Well, I'm heading off to bed. Hope you all have a good sleep.
Ann
