One for Lucky

That is pretty good ID Kneevin. Yeah it is an oliverianum. I was hoping people would be guessing a while on that one as it is pretty hard to find. This one is at the Morton Arb and seemed fine last fall. I was planning on trying one at some point but haven't got around to getting one yet. Looks like you get one more try with this guy before you throw in the towel. How is your Parrotia Persica Vanessa doing? I definitely like the red color on the new leaves. Hopefully the fall color will be great also.

No, Don was absent too, but I bet you'll see him at the oak conference this fall in Dallas if you can make it there. FYI, the Big Nut award went to Mark Coggeshall. Unfortunately he had to leave early and wasn't present at the banquet to receive it. But if you know him, you could contact him and razz him about it!

Kneevin, I've not tried that maple here, assuming it had no chance. It's a nice one though, for those who can grow it.

Thanks, Guy.
Yep. I know Mark - rather like I 'know' you; we've never met in person, but have corresponded from time to time, and one of his sons married a local girl(her mother is the school nurse at the elementary school my kids attended).
Mark was one of my many mentors when I first embarked on collecting and grafting oaks.

More like Big Nut Emeritus...

Mark Coggeshall flashed through the central KY horticultural scene, on a brief diversion from his career in the Indiana division of forestry and before heading west to Missouri. I met him as a grower for IN, and then as propagator at Bernheim. Salt of the earth, even though the Boston inflection assured that he was never lost in a KY crowd.

He was one of several that encouraged (and succeeded) in steering me into IPPS membership. His dad (Roger) is another fine piece of work (Mr. Syringa), and no more generous individuals you'll want to meet.

If you write him, try addressing him as "Mock" (a Boston accent version of "Mark") -- see if he can tell you where that nickname came from!
