I have never grown a lily in my life. But I bought a Kafir Lily (I didn't know what it was then) last year when I was in CA and brought it home in my suitcase. It got badly damaged but I managed to pull it through. This photo shows the 2 month progression of its beginning and ending of its bloom cycle. I documented it every day and these are the best photos that I took starting on 5-10 and ending on 7-10. I hope you like it.

Jesse, If you haven't already looked, check on Clivia miniata in the plant files. There is a wealth of DG comments that maybe very helpful to you. I have a mother plant which is 23 years old (now we have many from it) that we bought at a flower show in NYC on the pier in 1983. It is always specular. Last spring it had 9 stalks of blooms. I only have a snippet of it in the lower left corner of this picture. I am going to spring for a yellow one as a gift to my DH. Enjoy your new treasure. Patti
Patti, what kind of soil mixture do you use?
Jesse is not watching or answering her posts.
I got my one & only Kafir lily(yellow) this past fall & it bloomed even without soil-it was beautiful.I need to put her in a pot & want to know what,I should use. Thanks for any information.
Will anyone help??
Thanks for any information.
I will ask my husband what he normally buys. At the moment I have it in a can without the label. I will get back to you tonight. Patti
Sorry that I have not answered you. I have been in bed with a bad case of heat exhaustion. That is why I have not been online.
When I potted this all I had was some plain potting soil made by Scott's. Evidentally the lily likes it because it really has thrived.

Christmascactus, We had to go to the store to find out it's name. SUN GRO Metro MIx 510. We have big permanent beds in our solar greenhouse so we usually fill them up when we have depleted them from potting up additional plants and then we dump whats left in a garbage can under my bench but with no bag. We just have used other brands but like this one.
Formulated with Bark, Canadian Sphagnum peat moss, horticultural grade Vermiculite, processed Bark Ash, starter nutrient charge, Dolomitic Limestone and our long-lasting wetting agent.
Applications
Especially suited for stock plants and container plants. Formulated with less vermiculite than the Metro-Mix 500.
Happy potting, Patti
Hi folks,
Clivias are now known as forest lilies (boslelies) in South Africa, where they originally come from, since kaf(f)ir is a racist term with the same meaning and level of offensiveness as the "n" word here in the USA. Whenver I see them labeled as such at nurseries (which is fortunately becoming rarer) I try to gently inform the owners so they can simply call it clivia or forest lily. Most botanic gardens and more recently published books have already updated their labels.
Some people collect clivias and their are quite a few variations available, some of which are really expensive. A great book that will tell one anything one wants to know about them was written a few years ago by Harold Koopowitz, who is an authority on the genus.
Good luck with your clivia, they are very long lived plants if well taken care of.
Ernie
Patti,thank you so much.
That's a great mixture, now if I can find it around here.
