Greenie, Indirt said it best. I haven't had the Monarch's I hoped to have, but I didn't get my bush until May, could have been a little late for them. I have had the Giant Swallowtail and multiple Queens to visit. It has re-seeded like crazy! I am so thrilled with it. Can't wait until next year.
Thanks for the cuphea!
Dallas RU and Plant Swap Have and Wants Oct 8th
Well Gang, I am trying to propprogate again, but I am cheating this time, I am using rooting harmones. :)
Pat I got a correction, its not a Gold Edge Hosta, its Golden Tiara.
Did you say you had Aphrodite?
Sheila I am going to try and root you some Mexican Flame Vine. :) I got a gallon size plant I just bought and put in the ground a few weeks ago, so I hope it will work.
I got some Datura seed I just took off my plant. Wow Josephine that plant is growing and got three new blooms on it. Do that plant prefer sun or shade? I got it in semi Shade, but I want to move it where it will be more showy. :)
Debbie did I read that you might not be coming, what up with that?
My dutura has survived in both full sun and full shade. It grew bigger in full sun. The only problem I ever had was the year we got 32" rain in 4 days. It did NOT like all that water! The one I have in full shade is on the edge of my drop-off. Not hardly any dirt and I have never watered it. It's growing like a weed! *giggle
Sylvia, Daturas are very adaptable, and if yours is doing well, I wouln't move it, you might try a second one in a sunnier spot, and see how it goes.
I forgot to mention that Daturas don't like to be moved. Or at least for me.
Sheila I would take some milkweed. The items you wanted are marked and yours.
Sheila - I'd love some Shasta Daisies. And if the white w/purple center Rose of Sharon starts for you, I'd be very interested. I just adore Rose of Sharons (and currently have 4 in my yard).
Patrob - I'll gladly take some Mexican Mint Marigold.
If someone could give me a "Rooting for Dummies" mini-tutorial, I will try my hand at starting some plants. Whatever survives my attempts, I'll be happy to share.
Carla
Carla, I use a soil mix for rooting plants that I or my husband blend at home.
2 parts cheap regular potting soil
2 parts peat moss
1 part perlite
This makes a very loose but water retentive soil that works great for rooting cuttings.
Take the cuttings from not too soft a growth, they should have some substance, it it is too soft it might not root.
The cuttings should have two or three leaf nodes, remove the leaves from the lower leaf nodes and from the second if it has three. If the top leaves are large you might want to cut those in half, if not leave them as they are.
Be sure that your cutting will have at least one set of leaf nodes in the soil.
I use the small styrofoam cups because they are deeper and also take less soil than the square ones.
Fill the cups to 1/4 inch of the top and water well. Insert your cuttings and water well again making sure to wet the cuttings leaves.
Put them in total shade, and water every day, if windy and extremely hot twice a day, do not let them dry out.
In two or three weeks they shoud be rooted, depending on the plant.
Well I hope that helps, let me know how it works out.
Josephine.
The hyssop is, how shall we say it, looking "troubled" right now. We have had a wetter summer than we've had in about the last 5 years. Maybe yes, maybe no on that one--we'll see about mid-Sept.
Don't rub it in...some of us are in a 3 year drought!! =)
we were too, actually 5 year down here
I'm just trying to let the 5 people who wanted the plant know I might not have it and why

My DH said the other day that droughts are broken by floods. Not sure how much truth to that, but when you haven't had rain in a long time and it comes in sheets for days, it seems like a flood!
Sitting here in FW waiting on my flood. lol!
Sheila I have that white Hibiscus with the deep red throat, its called Minerva! Would that be the one you have?
Loonie I have the Hibiscus Bluebird too. Its a huge blue flower with a red throat ... I can try and root that one too. Actually its rather woody, maybe able to root in water.
Josephine I bought more soil, perlite and peat moss Saturday to make my mixture so I could get the proportions right. I am going to propergate something if it kills me.
I know you guys are probaly laughing at me, but when I show up with a boatload of cuttings ....... LOL
Oh Sylvia, I think you are doing fine, that hibiscus looks really pretty.
Keep up the good work.
Thanks Josephine you are so encouraging. I have been thinking though ... do you think I am going mess things up using that rooting harmone? Has Mitch's class's started already? ... been missing him.
I got another Hibiscus I can try digging it up, if anyone wants it. It always come back any way. dont remember the name of it. but its a smaller flower than the Hardy Hibiscus.
Sylvia, you won't hurt anything with the rooting hormone, and please don't dig up your pretty hibiscus, keep it and enjoy it.

I've been chatting w/ others on another forum about moth gardening. If you truly don't want it, I'd be interested.
I have a few of ROS trees, note the wires in the picture! This one is the 'Minerva' I think, and it is my favorite too Sylvia. It doesn't re-seed as freely as the white one does. I have started a few cuttings of it for the swap though. They were already trees when I moved here in '91. The summers really take a lot out of it though, because it is in full sun. I plan to start some in other areas of my yard just in case it sucumbs to the heat.
Sheila that look like "Bluebird". which will become a tree probaly ... if I stop cutting it back!
That is beautiful Carla... I would love one if you get it to root.
Renatelynne, for both of our sakes, I hope to be successful. This beauty gets full, all-day sun and even though I do have to water it every 7-10 days (due to our extreme heat and drought now), it is a vigorous bloomer. The hummingbirds love it, too.
Carla
Just looking back through all the posts -
patrob - do you still have yucca rupicola? I'd be interested in trading for that. Do you have Eye of the Tiger iris? I will check what else I might be able to find that you might be interested in...
dmj - so interested in that red crossvine if you have that still? I might have an echinacea sunset and I have scutellaria wrightii - it is purple native.
Check out my list of plants up in this thread a ways!
I can root the crossvine I think---that scutellaria would be nice.
dmj - would you like more than one?
It is a prolific, long bloomer. I have seen some small butterflies visit it. It keeps its shape/size/place and is quite xeric.
Debbie what do you want me to root for you? I am still trying! lol
indirt, the next time I am at the ranch I will take a photo what I believe to be yucca rupicola and d-mail it to you. A&M's native distribution chart shows it in San Saba county, and the ranch is on the Colorado River, the boundary between Mills and San Saba counties. If it truly is yucca rupicola, I have all anyone will want. Plus a few more!
The yuccas are yours if you want them. If you have an extra, I would love to have an echinacea 'Sunset' or a scutellaria wrightii. No trade required, of course!
Patricia
Indirt--I'll take at least one and if you have extras those too.
Miss Sylvia--I will love what ever you bring me. Maybe a Hosta for a pot that you have way too many of that variety? Since you've convinced me Hostas are another addiction I need to have, any kind will do. I don't have any. It will need to live in a pot until the shade increases. ;)
Loonie, I have you down for those items you requested. I am listing my promised items under items I have to offer.
Ted you need to get a lot more than just milkweed from me. I am getting so much on your list!
Sylvia, thanks for the flame vine, I saw one at TXMel's house and fell in love with it. I tried to root one but with no luck.
Sheila
patrob and dmj - have edited my list post for you.
dmj.. you know deer think hostas are candy? (just in case you have any deer around your place)... it is the ONLY reason I don't plant them. I just love them.
I live in suburban Houston--no deer. Just an oppossum that might have moved on...I haven't seen him since early July.
Debbie, he probably is staying hid during the heat of the day. Then prancing around your garden in the middle of the night! LOL!
Sheila, I am getting caught up! Mom had an emergency trip to the hospital, and I was gone most of three days, but she's home next-door now and doing well. I have you down for Pink Obedient Plant, Big Red Sage Penstemonsides, Black & Blue Salvia and
Mary Frances & Michigan Pride Irises.
If you still have them, I'd like to add a couple of elephant ears and a May Night salvia to my request list. (I think you had me down for Hillary's Sweet Lemon mint and milkweed plant and/or seeds earlier). Thanks!
Patricia
Probably so Sheilah--I tell you I keep my eyes OPEN when I'm out there pulling the weeds. Giant rodent/marsupials tend to cause me to become unglued. Any little branch scraping against the fence, and I jump out of my skin--lol
Loonie I will try to root the Bluebird but if it dont take I will bring you some cuttings.
Debbie dont worry about the Hostas you got them.
patrob - I would love a yucca or three if there is anything on my list you would like and there is still some left..
Sorry guys not to be in here more my computer is out so having to find ways to get to one! Good news is the computer gets back here this week!
Yes, that is great news, we miss you.
It is hard to be out of the loop! Sooo much to read... and get caught up on...
