And here is another one. Almost all of the cuttings have these so I guess that means they are ok? Does that tell me anything about the roots? Or can these occur without roots forming?
I am an official Plumeria newbie :)
Looks like leaves starting to grow.
Just give it some sunlight and they should grow pretty fast.
Other than a light misting, I wouldnt water untill a few leaves open fully.
Roots seem to grow with the leaves, so you probably dont have much yet.
Good luck,
Dave
Donna, I agree with Dave. Those are baby leaves which failed to launch because the cutting had no roots. Wipe or pull all the black stuff away. New leaves are coming in so roots are starting. Full sun, bottom heat, and misting daily will help the process along. A soil temperature of 80 degrees or higher is ideal for rooting and not difficult to achieve in this season. I water my cuttings every day in the summer because I know that they have good drainage and plenty of bottom heat, but misting is fine too and will keep the cutting hydrated until it has some roots of its own.
well heck, here I thought there was some scientific name for those. Leaves. LOL Duh. Seems like that should have occurred to me. LOL
I am thrilled to know there are roots starting, and of course leaves. They have been in full sun all through the 115 degrees, mostly because it was too hot to go out and move them, LOL, but they seemed to love it! Will just leave them alone and let them do their thing.
My leaves are opening. They are so pretty! I just love these. I was at Wal Mart this morning and they had them in the houseplant section, about the same size as mine but in little pots, and they were so dry and sad looking! Broke my heart. But DH got all huffy when I suggested buying them and bringing them home to take care of them properly. Sheesh, what a party pooper, huh? LOL Needless to say, they did not come with me.
Anyway, here are my leaves that I am just the beaming mama over.
Pudgy, They are like cute little kittens and puppys. You just want to take them home with you so they will have a safe place to live out their lives with someone that will love them and take care of them. LOL!
Lookin' good, Donna. You're going to get three nice branches there too. When that happens to me, I just tell hubby he's right and go back later for them;-)
scoolie, that is exactly how it felt!
Clare, good idea, I should have thought of that one on my own. I'm slipping. LOL
I will be planting more plumeria seeds tomorrow, I had bid on the JL pansy pinks and the Carmen, but lost the carmen, well I got a 2nd chance offer for the carmen and OF COURSE I said yes. LOL Need them like a hole in the head. :~D
I like it when you get a second chance! Congrats, Donna!
Compare your 'winning bid' price to Florida colors list price.
If you lost an auction you may get it anyway very reasonably.
Thanks Malestrom, that is good to know. Fortunately, I got these at my bid of $6.50 and along with my 15 seeds, he sent me a bonus pack of seeds. Seeds out my ears! LOL
I have been looking at all the listings at Florida Colors and drooling which is BAD because I said I was not going to get addicted to plumera. I keep going back to Magnus Opus and Duke, but I will not give in. I WILL NOT!
But if I do, I will tell DH it is YOUR fault. :~D
Prepare to be assimilated
Resistance is futile
You must comply
Magnus Opus, Magnus Opus,
Repeat 25 times then buy it.... 8^D
LOL, Michael!
sounds inevitable, doesn't it? LOL
Yep, ya might as well go ahead and get it over with. You know your gonna do it. That way there's one less thing on your list.
LOLOL, scoolie, too funny. Oddly enough even crossing things off my list never seems to make it smaller. I find things faster then I can cross off. LOL
WUAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA
THERE IS NO CURE!!!!
BUY BUY BUY BUY BUY BUY BUY LOL!!!
Oh my gosh, you are all a bunch of ENABLERS!!!!!
{plugging my ears and saying LALALALALALA to block you all out} LOL
See, once ya cross something off the top of your list, it means you can add something to the bottom. And plugging your ears isn't gonna work. Remember those cute adorable kittens and puppies you keep seein?
Actually, I have reached the point where I'm not buying any anymore, but that didn't happen until my plumies surpassed the 300 mark...
I am only making purchases if I thin the herd.
I am trading and accepting gifts though heh...
You are all addicted. I, on the other hand, have self control. hehehehe Are you buying that? No, huh? LOL
I think the only reason I am not maxing out the credit card is because I have not had any blooms here. I would guess that when that happens, step out of the way. If that little tiny spent bloom of my friends that I got a whiff of moments before it died on that rotted cutting was enough to get me 8 cuttings and 40 seeds of my own, I am in BIG trouble come bloom day. LOLOL
Yah, the scent really reeled me in too. The first time I smelled one was at a local nursery, and I bought the two that they had for sale immediately upon smelling them.
I was taken by the long smooth trunks
I enjoy stroking them
I can pass on flowers
Let me know if you believe that heh.....
not sure how I missed your post Malestrom, but NO! I do NOT believe that. :~)
Wanted to update on my babies. The cuttings are leafed out, all except the reds, they are just now showing horns. But they are all healthy and happy. It has been getting chilly at night, but not low enough to rush them inside. The rooted cuttings will go dormant, right? But how should I overwinter my little seedlings? They won't go dormant, will they?
Hi Donna, you will want to put the cuttings that have no leaves yet on a heat mat to finish rooting. You can even put the just-rooted ones and seedlings on a heat mat too under lights inside. I've heard that it is best if seedlings not go dormant if they are under a year old. That means that you keep them warm and under lights inside if you don't have a greenhouse. For the past two years, I've put my seedlings in my greenhouse.
I let seedlings that were about six months old go dormant last winter and they made it through the winter fine. I left them in the four inch pots that I started them in. This spring I transfered them into gallon pots and they took off. I really should pot them up, but I need to conserve space in the greenhouse this winter.
You can never buy a greenhouse big enough, or maybe, I should say that however big it is, if you are a lover of plants, you will run out of room.
Thanks, both of you. I don't have much choice where these babies are gonna live inside, I am allowed one small square of floor space next to the dining room slider with southern exposure, anywhere else they are in the way and I never hear the end of it. LOL I had thought to put the cuttings in the dryer closet where it is warm, but it is also dark and if these are too young to go dormant, that won't work. Jose, these are only a couple months old. :~(
Well, time will tell.
Donna, how about a mini-greenhouse outside with a heat pad or two? I just bought this one at Harbor Freight Tools for $9, and my digital sensor in there has been reading temps in the high 70's at night when it is high 50's outside. There is no assembly required. It just unfolds into a tent-like thing. I have mine over a rack so that I can keep two heating pads in there. You could put your seedlings in something like this outside on a patio or against the house.
wow, I had not seen those. I will get over to Harbor this week and see if they have them. That would be perfect. Thanks Clare!
Donna, if the aren't in stock, you can order them shipped to you here: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=92684 They have other ones too that are better quality, but they are more expensive.
thanks Clare, that is just what I did. My local one did not carry them so I ordered online. :~)
Is that a grafted gardenia off to the left Clare?
:)
Hi Robert, yes, it is a grafted "First Love/Amy."
:)
Hello:
I'm new to DG and really loving this website .... can never have too much info on plants/flowers! I am interested in trying Plumeria's. Any suggestions as to which one is good to begin with and not too expensive? I have lots of plants, but have never tried the Plumies .... was told once that they are difficult to care for!? Any info anyone can give will be greatly appreciated! :)
Thanks so much,
Plantladylin
Hi Plantladylin and Welcome to Dave's! Check out the sticky thread at the very top of the Plumeria Forum. It has a ton of information on growing plumerias. They are very easy to grow, but they are a tropical tree so they need to be sheltered from frost and freezing temps during the winter. If you are in Zone 9b, you can bring them in the house or garage, put them in a greenhouse, or put them in a protected spot outside for the winter. I highly recommend Florida Colors Nursery for the best prices and best quality: http://www.floridacolors.com The weather is turning colder now, and soon they will stop shipping, and it is hard for plumerias to get established in a cold season without a greenhouse, heating pad, etc.; so you are better off waiting until spring to purchase your first one. If you are near Homestead at all, you should go pay them a visit. Luc and Carol are the nicest people on the planet, and they have my total respect. They can make recommendations for you based on what you colors and what fragrances you find the most pleasing.
Hey Clare:
Thanks for the info .... I'm @4 hours north of Homestead, which is in South Fla. I'm way up north in Daytona Beach. But, I'm gonna check out their website. I really look forward to my first try at Plumies and plan on reading the sticky thread at the forum as you suggested.
Thanks again!
Welcome PlantLady...
I hope you try plumies they are wonderful plants to grow and soon you will be hooked..
Your in Daytona Beach??
It took me 6 hours to reach Daytona from where i live and i am 1 hour north of Homestead because of the traffic..
4hrs lol you must drive near 100mph and i thought i was a fast driver :)
This is a great place to hangout and there are many Floridians in here too..
Clare is here all the time and so are a few more peeps so they can help you with any questions you have..
I think you should look thru Clare's thread to see whats blooming and there are a few others here too...
This will give you a idea what plumies can looks like in all their glory..
I also recommend Florida Colors and Brad's and Suki's sites..
Don't buy any cuttings for now but rather rooted plants and grafted rooted plants...
