Proposing the Tropical Fruit Forum

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

While I was proposing a banana forum, people suggested an even better forum- a tropical fruit forum.

The problem with the tropical and fruit and nut forum is that they don't specifically address tropical fruit.

Tropical fruit can be very diverse and I think, qualifies for it's own forum.

While I hesitate to post a comment that makes me seem like a wet blanket, I really like having tropical fruit threads included in the current fruit & nut forum. I grow more non-tropical fruits, so I am much more likely to check out threads in the current forum, and I'm just not sure I'd be a regular at a new forum. I've learned things and posted comments on my own experience with my lemon and key lime tree on threads that I wouldn't have gone looking for in a "tropical fruit" forum. I would never have considered growing bananas before finding a thread on them, and now I have some cute little banana trees in a new "tropicals" bed.... since I didn't think I could grow tropical fruits here, I wouldn't even have looked for such a thread in the new forum.

I know that sometimes a new forum generates additional discussion, and maybe that would be the case here. But the "Edible Fruits & Nuts" forum isn't so busy that threads regarding tropical fruits quickly slide right off the page, so I'm not sure that splintering the topic off into its own forum is necessary. While I'm quite enthusiastic about tropical fruits, I'm afraid that we might lose more participation than we'd gain by creating a new forum.

These "new forum" threads seem to be generally more about voicing positive votes for a new forum, so I apologize if I'm stepping on toes with this post. I don't want to offend anybody, and I'm not trying to be "Ms. Negativity," so I hope nobody will take my 2 cents as any sort of criticism. I think the idea of a "tropical fruits" forum deserves discussion, but I also think we should consider whether the topic might be better off continuing as part of the existing forum.

I think the idea of a tropical fruit forum is great. While I do read "Edible Fruits and Nut-bearing Plants" I find the topics for the most centering around Northern growing. It does interest me some but it has little to do with growing subtropical and tropical fruits in SW Florida. I grow over 20 varieties of these fruits in my yard and I find more discussion in the "Florida Forum" than the "Edible Fruit" forum that is relevant to these fruits. This will bring it all to one forum.

So I am all for a separate forum and will continue to monitor the forums I already do.
