Ldl ~ I am not sure if it is just my pc but your photos didn't come thru. Anyone else out there in DG land have the same trouble?

Springfield, MO(Zone 6b)

I have a purple plant and I don't know what it is! When I bought it, it had a bunch of cute little purple flowers on it. But now most of the flowers have died. Do you know what this plant is and how to take care of it? I live where it's been about 103 out every day so I thought it was too hot for the plant even though it's in the shade. So I brought it inside just now thinking that would help and it's by a window. Here's a picture (and as an added bonus I get to show off my adorable kitty! ...she was curious about the new addition to her floor :) )

Nice purple, nice kitty too. Can't believe she isn't trying to torture your plant. I may be all wet but think it is Mexican Heather. Better check it out before you take my word on it.

Springfield, MO(Zone 6b)

Oh, I just noticed you were looking for purple foliage plants, not purple flowers... oops :)

Springfield, MO(Zone 6b)

Oh Podster, I sent the good picture... check this one out!! LOL

That is so precious... and such a cool contrast between the color of your cat and the bright flower! I'm off to bed now, but tomorrow I'll post a picture you might enjoy (it's on another computer so can't now). We ought to start a thread for pictures of pets by plants...that would be fun!

Roopville, GA(Zone 7b)

sure ellianor start a thread with that topic! thats a great idea : ) have a goodnight!

I'll vote for the pets by plants. I have a cat that is a camera hog.
This is a tradescantia plant, I think. It favors the purple heart only paler. This one has suffered neglect for the last five years. The blue bidet is listed in the container forum. I am shopping for ideas of plants to plant in it. Any suggestions? See more pictures on the other forum.

it looks so much like purple heart but i like the shade of it.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Kelly, I agree it does look like the purple heart but a paler shade. It roots as easily, apparently comes back even with freezing temperatures, abuse and neglect. Seems as hardy as purple heart too.

The purple velvet is unique. That is one I have never seen. Nice! pod

Fruitport, MI(Zone 5a)

It's similiar to the purple passion but it is an upright plant. It's about 15 inches high right now. It has larger leaves also.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Does it bloom or have any odor?

Roopville, GA(Zone 7b)

very pretty! i used to have a purple passion plant but it died. it was nice all except for the stinky flowers lol. i haven't seen the purple velvet. i love your begonias as well! they are so pretty. i just got my first begonia cutting and it is pink i don't think its a rex though. it rooted fairly quick and now has new growth. i like the begonias the more i look at them. thanks for sharing your pictures : )

It has never bloomed for me, yet that is. I have looked on the internet but can't find another plant like it to find out more about it. I do not know the botanical name of it either. The tag just said "purple velvet plant".

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Kathyvm, look in the plant files or do a search for gynura. Tell me if that is it. If it is, I had one. I think I killed it with kindness. It will bloom a stinky and ugly yellow/gold flower. The books recommend not letting it bloom. Maybe that's not the one you have though... It is pretty as purple is a weakness. pod

Fruitport, MI(Zone 5a)

I don't see one like the one that I have in the plant files. I have the regular passion vine too. This one is different. I'll take a picture of both of them next to eachother to show the difference. It's dark now so I'll try to do it tommorrow.

Fruitport, MI(Zone 5a)

Here's the picture with the purple velvet leaf on the left and my purple passion on the right. As you can see the leaves are different in size and shape. I think that I found what looks what I have on the net. It too is called a purple passion - upright variety. Here's a link that shows it. http://www.pickoftheplanet.com/varieties/gynura.html.

All right! I have spent the day sleuthing thru garden centers and greenhouses. Darn hot but always fun.
Kelly ~ the plant which was in the blue bidet was seen today and was tagged a "Variegated Purple Heart". I also saw a "White Velvet jew", it really didn't resemble the one I have but it may be a variant. The one I saw had no purple/pink in it. It was green and a little less compact.

This is a new purple plant. The only one I acquired today which deserves a pat on the back. I am an impulse buyer and don't care about the culture till it is home. The photo doesn't really do it justice.
This is a purple Waffle Plant Hemigraphis Exotica. I love the color and the feel. Unfortunately, I think it is going to be a water hog! Oh well, what's one more.....

ohhhhhhhhh how pretty!!! i have that in one of my houseplant books. if you need info. on it i can post some for you. just let me know. great looking plant : )

kelly

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Kelly What book did you see that in. I have sooo many plant books. They keep me going thru the winter days. If I don't have the book, yes I'll ask you to go to the trouble. Thanks pod

Roopville, GA(Zone 7b)

it is miracle gro's encyclopedia of plants

kelly

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Kelly, that is one I don't have. Any info you can send my way will be appreciated. It is in the plant files but pretty generic info... Thanks for the assistance. pod

Roopville, GA(Zone 7b)

podster i just love this book! i find myself using it all the time. here is what it says...needs medium light; high or low light will cause plant to decline. will tolerate average to high temps. keep away from drying winds and cold drafts. med. to high humidity 30 percent or higher. keep evenly moist. allowing to dry out will may leaf edges turn brown. feed only 3 tiems in summer and repot annually because plant has a vigorous root system. also called red flame ivy it branches well when pruned. pinch out tips regulary to keep shrubby and thick. give plant a shower once a month. roots easily by st4em cuttingss. stem cuttings will root in water or soil. you will get fastest and healthiest plant by soil. use rooting hormone and provide warmth and humidity.

hope this helps : )

Very pretty podster. I've only seen those as little plants in 4" pots. It looks much better in a large basket all thick and bushy.

You said that you "spent the day sleuthing thru garden centers and greenhouses." Is that the only plant you came home with? You sure have good control.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Only one... not good control, just too many plants at home. The only other one I was tempted with was Moses in the cradle in a large basket. I bought a small Moses at a garage sale in June and it is growing at warp speed so I resisted. Then too this time of year alot of the plants start looking sad....

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

All right...how about purple cacti?

Thumbnail by Chantell
Roopville, GA(Zone 7b)

beautiful chantell!!!! i completely forgot about the pretty shades cacti and succulents take on during summer sun. i just started collecting a few cacti and succulents this year.
thanks for sharing! i did a thread on pinks as well. do you have any you can add there with pink colorations???

kelly : )
