It's amazing that every year some one gets a picture of me frowning...
I only frown once a year, it just happens in July - kind of like groundhog's day, honest!

Photos are great everyone, I can't believe I brought our camera and didn't take a single photo.
If anyone has a photo of Eunice and her "golden tan", Matt and I would love a copy.

Steph,
I'm sorry we missed your birthday. Happy belated birthday toots!

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

Morning all. My pics went to Idaho with Fiona Lol. We were up at 3 am on Sunday getting her and the Fossil on their way.

Pam and Don, the day could not have been better. Your hospitality is overwhelming. (I will not look at the Prince. I will not look at the Prince......)

Fiona bubbled all the way home about coming back to see horses. "They SAID" I could come back." She was thrilled by the warm welcome. Please thank Amy for me for taking the monster child out and about the ranch.

To all who now know more that they wanted to about dissection-Fiona was surprised that everyone seemed to like her. It is not often that she is in an adult only group. I think she is a pretty good kid so thank you all.

To old friends and new, we had a great day. It was good to see each and every one of you. What an amazing group of folks from far and near.

Blooms-send me your phone # and I will send the Fossil and Fiona your way if they come back through Utah.

It is my day off so out I go to plant all of the goodies before the gloom lifts. Gotta love the smell of fish emulsion in the morning Lol!

Hey folks! I have been in a whirlwind since I got back from the RU- I have tons of photos but I have suprise out of town company coming today (just found out an hour ago....aaaaaarrrrggghhh!) and my house is a disaster because I've been playing in the dirt all weekend! At least I don't have to do a thing to the yard but the house- geez!

I didn't get to read anything on this thread, but just want to say a HUGE thank you to Dr. Don and to Pam for being such gracious hosts, and to all you who made me feel so welcome even though I am a Newbie- you are all really truly wonderful people and I had a lovely time and thanks for your generosity with your plants even though I had nothing to give in return. I will look lovingly on each of my plants as they grow and remember all the fabulous people who gave them to me- and I'll be asking all of you a million questions as to how to care for them.

So, I only have time to put up one photo, so naturally it has to be of Mike and the Compost Pile of Power!

I had an excellent time ...as usual...enjoyed meeting each one of you...I am SOOO glad that Blooms and Crystal spin made it .....neither rain nor flood nor flat tires will stay a DG'er from a RU!!

P.S. Amy is now ezylivin....a subscriber to DG....

oh mi gosh. "The days are just packed.", quoting Calvin . We were off to the Fullerton Arboretum yesterday looking for a Dara's Choice Salvia, which will be available at their Sale house in October. Good time for my next visit.

Of course we each got another plant -
Crystal Spin got a Campanula punctata 'Flashing Lights' - which has variably highlighted leaves and will have a lavender flower. the foliage was the attraction.

I got myself another sunrose. The Cerise Queen - got one of those there before. Killed it with love. read over watered. and I spent this morning taking down a rosemary that had reached small tree proportions. Never meant to let it get so big. It had killed a bunch of herbs, salvias, and succulents. So I must get going and spiff up a bit to go to a nursery or two for some of those. LOL ~ when I get a moment this evening I'll down load my pics and put them on Jo's thread. ~~~Blooms

Ahhh... I thought thread - not forum

One of theses days we'll get it straight, so here is the forum for round up photos.

Hello everyone,

I'm sorry I'm so late getting into this thread, but it's been a busy weekend for me and it's not over yet. lol

What a great group of people we had at our RU this year. You all made it so enjoyable and as you all know, I really enjoyed it myself. I think I got to talk to everyone this year, but not as much as I would have like with each person. I can tell you one thing though, my voice was very hoarse for the past 2 days. lol

I know we all really appreciate all that Don and Pam did for us and hope we did them proud as group. Don and Pam, thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the hospitality you showed all of us. Please let all your workers know that we appreciated all of their help also. I hope we didn't do any damage to any of your ranch this year. lol

I would also like to thank all the people who pitched in with help to set up the food table and helped straighten it up afterwards. That is something we need to set up for next year. In fact, there were many things I didn't think of this year, but I'm keeping notes for next year. :-)
Jo and Maggiemoo, thank you for doing the nametags and registration table. Matt for helping Don with many things and for doing our yummy pig. Poor Eunice. :-(

Stephanie, I'm sorry we forgot it was your birthday, but I hope you enjoyed it anyway. :-)

I so enjoyed meeting all the new people that came this year. I've been waiting a long time to meet several of them and it was GREAT to finally meet them.

Don, as always, you surprised us with several thank you gifts, and special awards and I thank you again for my little gift. :-)) Now that's another item I should have thought of.....door prizes.

Since I was so gabby this year, i didn't get many pictures taken, but I will post the few I took soon. I have to go to San Diego tomorrow....we are taking my grandson to Sea World for his 4th birthday.

I spoke to Don this morning on the phone, as they are still without internet service. He thought the RU was great and will come by when he is able to.

I hope you all had as great of a day as I did and met some new friends. Isn't it nice to put a face with a name?

Thank you all again for making this day wonderful for all of us.

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Thanks Blooms, great photos. It was nice meeting you as I was leaving! Glad you made it safe though. It was a great day.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

ok I loved that rice salad dish. It was so yoummy. Any way you may want to share the recipe with me?

Santa Ana, CA(Zone 9b)

Hi Steph -- are you speaking to me? Or was there another grain-salad?

I brought tabouli made from Laurel's Kitchen [cookbook] recipe, but without the white beans she adds to make the protein balanced, and without the mint as I didn't have any growing at the time and didn't want to buy a whole bunch for a couple tablespoons.

In the past, I have brought tabouli made from Fantastic brand mix, but with lots of fresh tomatoes and fresh parsley, and either all lemon juice or half lemon + half Balsalmic vinegar for the acid... and gotten pretty good reviews on that, too... right JasperDale???

~'spin!~

Oh yeah, the important thing is to make it the day before -- this is true for both the "scratch" recipe (combine everything but the bulgur wheat and let it "steep" together as the bulgur chills overnight; toss together well the next day) AND the mix (letting the mix + extra parsley/tomatoes season overnight removes the powdery MIX taste).

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

It was very yummy...

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Yes, Crystalspins Tabouli is EXCELLENT !!!!!!!!!!!

Moab, UT(Zone 6b)

Hi everybody, I got home at about 10 last night. My plants survived the trip altho it was soooo hot I am amazd they did. They are all very happy to get outta the car. ME TOO.

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Hey Mike, glad your still here....lol Hot enough for you?

Hi Tish, glad you made it home ok. It must have been a very hot trip and can't believe your plants came through for you. lol
Frogrus would know about the Vicks plant.

Donna

Santa Ana, CA(Zone 9b)

Vick's Plant ( from http://www.plantoftheweek.org/week284.shtml ) :

"Plectranthus tomentosa, or Vicks Plant, is a perennial plant with leaves that smell like Vick's Vap-O-Rub or mentholatum when crushed. The light green, succulent, opposite leaves are broadly ovate, up to 3½ inches (9 cm) long, and are densely covered with short hairs. The plants will reach up to 30 inches (75 cm) tall and the lower stems can become very woody. They are of easy culture and are hardy in USDA zones 9-12.

"Blooming In early spring and again in the fall, the purple flowers occur in terminal racemes. Individual flowers may reach ½ inch (1.3 cm) in length.

"Culture: Plectranthus tomentosa need full sun to partial shade or high interior lighting with a well-drained soil mix. In the greenhouse, we use a soil mix consisting of 2 parts sand to 1 part loam to 1 part peat moss. The plants are well watered and allowed to dry before watering again. Fertilizer is applied only once during the growing season and it is diluted to ½ strength. If too much water is used, the leaves will turn yellow and get mushy. With overwatering, we have also had some plants where the stems rotted at the soil line. During the winter months, only water enough to keep the leaves from shriveling.

"Propagation: Plectranthus tomentosa is propagated from stem cuttings at any time during the growing season. "
------------------
I would plant it in one of the [slightly] raised beds with some tree shade, and plenty mulch. Before freeze, take all the terminal ends, Rootone, and a bunch of mix made up per formula above: make 6" pots for everyone you know. *Someone's* will make it through the winter and you can beg it back to replant next year!

OR, put in a larger pot and give to my DSis to water with her containers and I will pick it up on my next trip! You can smell it when you visit!

Santa Ana, CA(Zone 9b)

I make so-so humus (too much clay here) and fair hummus!

Best is made with canned garbanzos and the finer sieve in the Oster processor's grinder. When I'm too lazy to get out the Osterizer, Fantastic or other mix is acceptable IF you make it the night before (same as my tabouli recommendation; freshly made it tastes like powdered cardboard) and use virgin olive oil.

Easiest is Trader Joe's or Whole Foods deli-case... but not the roasted garlic variety -- it gets WAY too strong by the time it is sold to you... and I *like* garlic.
