Who has some Calla lilies to show us?

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Neal it is a lovely pink whatever it is, and a really interesting shape too, I can see why you love it.

Oh Robert, never mind about having your air fares paid to Holland, they are both amazing. I love them both, but if I could get on a plane and dig your Picasso up, hmmm, you'd better guard that one! That green edge looks to go all the way around, so lucky!

Funny, I had thought yesterday of taking pics of my baby albos. They grow really easily don't they.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

New first bloom on a bulb planted last year. My tag says Amethyst, but it does not have the all over amethyst color - narrow white edge is right. Maybe in a few days it will color up.

I've got a Maroon Sensation today. I think it's the prettiest calla I've had bloom so far. This is the first one on this and it is just gorgeous. I can't wait to compare with Black Star and Schwartzwalder to see the difference.

Very pretty, Princess.

Love to see the different varieties, the colours and shapes vary so much. Nice shape and colour Tussee. Amethyst does have a very dark tube, set off nice with the white edge.

princessyfs, Maroon Sensation, wow! Amazing colour!

Keep them coming!

Wallaby1~

I was looking at the buds on my Picasso and saw this and thought of you.

Notice how the wavy edge of the leftmost bloom flows right up into the leaf edge which continues the motion.

I noticed the green line around Picasso too.

Yes, those albomacs are so easy. I'm getting a good germination rate too. The "Kenton Strain" is a vigorous one, heh-heh.

Picasso says to come on by, wallaby. (He loves the attention!)

Princess~

Love that Maroon Sensation!

Gemini_sage~

Whatever the suspected Sangria is, I lurve it!

BTW~ I mentioned to the folks about the great luck I had getting callas true to name (the one I REALLY wanted was Sangria!) and they said they hadn't had any complaints thus far. (well, it COULD be the truth.....) My former boss said she had just planted a Sangria and I said "Well don't be surprised if it isn't!". O well.

Robert.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

There's a reason Picasso was named 'Picasso'. His line drawings have that artistic wave and motion. The naming of these callas has been very carefully thought out!

Picasso, thanks for the invitation, if I were money-free I would be there in a jiffy!

Did anyone think as much about Callas as they do now? Communication makes us think much more than we would have done.

Neal, your 'Sangria' I think does have the same shape as one Tussee showed on the previous thread, the colour deepens and has a mottly apprearance, like floating fruit in the Punch!

I had a double today, those mutants are just so fascinating. Sometimes I wish we could grow them on purpose like that. It's supposed to be a peach one, but no peachy yet. I was considering doing a very small calla co-op in the future and wondered if ya'll would be interested in participating. I wanted to see if there was enough interest before I started investigating too much. Also wondering if any of you know when the best time to do so is. Thanks. Fran

The picture would help :)

Princess, are you thinking of spring for the coop? I'm certainly interested; I'm cheap and love the idea of combining our purchase power, lol. I would love more reds and oranges and 'Pink Mist' is a must for next year.
Neal

Neal, I didn't know what time of year was best for you northerners. Is spring best? I know, Pink Mist is on my wish list too!!

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Spring is best for us, and it seems the selection of spring offerings is usually better too.

Southern, United States

Ok then we'll count on spring! I've seen some new varieties I'm anxious to try like Hot Chocolate and Starlight...and Pink Mist.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

princess that is a wild looking calla. I would be interested in a calla coop also.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Hmmm, so would I be interested if I wasn't over here!

I did see Black Star from someone, maybe next year we will have more. Picasso is another one I REALLY want.

My red nameless one is opening, it looks a deep burgundy this year, so far anyway, and has a white edge which it didn't have before. It's metamorphising!

AND my Black Forest mishap has the funny leaf spathe which never really opened properly, it's clasping it's throat, I noticed it has a spadix at the bottom of the stem. Wonders..

princessy that is, as voss says, wild!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Wallaby here is a shot of calla gigantea which I bought from Kartuz in CA. The smaller one is a younger version of the same, I think I got from Calif_Sue. In front of the callas are my special glads. I must have planted them too shallow as they are sort of leaning. The small ones that I potted are about as tall, I just haven't gotten around to planting inground yet.

not the best pic, but I wanted to show that my Picasso doesn't have a green back as shown in Raydio's pictures. Could it be because it is a young plant?

Thumbnail by vossner
Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

voss, the glads do grow tall and tend to bend a little, but yours look like they are drying off. Mine are still in full growth, but being in pots I keep them watered, they do flower late. They should be fairly deep. The young ones may die back earlier, they may put themselves deeper as they get bigger.

Picasso, well, anything's possible! Next year it might do something different, mine seem to differ as they get older. Perhaps the varying weather makes a difference? Or could it be what they are growing in, new bulbs have been grown in a different compost to the ones we will use, so it's 'make-up' may be affected.

Nice healthy plant anyway.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Remember my funky little Calla Black Forest that wasn't?

The leaf spathe, with the spadix coming at the bottom of the stem.

The red/burgundy no name. This one from above shows the colour best.

Neal~

I see what you mean about the lack of green on the bloom. I have three more blooms coming that I'll look more closely at tomorrow, but I don't remember seeing any green on those either. I'll look at then tomorrow.

vossner~

I have a "White Giant" (Z.aethiopica var.) from Plant Delights that came from California originally. I'll have to keep it going year round for it to achieve the 80 inches it is said to reach. Not sure how........but I'm going to try!

Wallaby~

Love that red-burgungy no-name shot. That swirl is just astoundingly entrancing!

With your funky Black Forest and Princess' double blush (plus all the other "variations" we've posted on the Double Calla thread), I think we've seen that Zants are really full of surprises and oddness.

I agree that talking about plants and sharing personal pictures and experiences really piques my interest. I love it when someone "turns me on" to a plant that I haven't ever grown before, or by sharing their experience, make me appreciate one that I haven't grown for awhile in a new way. I have also looked afresh at plants I am growing now but may have become less appreciative of what they are about after talking about them at DG. I have found my way into several new "passions" via the people I've met through the forums. It such a wonderful place here in Dave's Garden!

Nothing spectacular plant-wise, and these grow like weeds around here, but I thought it was pretty lucky to get the afternoon sun on the flower with the deep shade in the background, and I didn't have to doctor the photo at all. My friend was standing right there when I took it and he didn't see the shot at all.

What a perfect, lovely pic!

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

stellapathic, you have the artist's eye, your friend doesn't! That is what much of photography is about. It's a great shot, so glad you shared it!

Robert I agree 100%, it is a combinaton of awareness, knowledge, and enthusiasm! Plus of course the good old (new) digi camera.

The pink I posted on Jul 11 has deepened and developing a lovely green reverse:

The setting looks different because I moved it. I was expecting orange, so it had to go to the pink garden, lol. This is the greening of the reverse:

Hmmm, it's looking almost salmon pink, lovely colour.

Crystal Blush has made another spathe.

My 'Majestic Red' unknown name one has fully opened, a little different to last year so I'm now confused. It has 2 spathes.

It is hiding a green tip and stripe.

So who's going to sponsor a co-op so I can have some of these beauties? I love them all!

Cramlington, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

This is the same Mozart flower I posted earlier. I love how it's changed color as it's aged.

Why have I never grown these before?!

Thumbnail by kniphofia
Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Gosh, I can't believe the colour change, beautiful! Nice shot too, you have the curves echoing each other.

In answer to your question kniphofia, we all start as babies, learn to crawl, walk, and some of us end up galloping!

Those last three photos are very elegant. I like that white base on the 'Majestic R' one.
My favorite plants are ones that friends have suprised me with- A person is limited by his own tastes, eh?

Wonderful picture of Mozart, kniph! Your lighting with the background really makes the calla worthy of lingering viewing. I just want to reach out and touch it!

Wow @ the way it has changed color.

Robert.

Denver, CO

I'm told I have some callas (and a ton more odd new things) blooming, and I'm 1000 miles away! Dangit. It happens every summer.

Bessemer City, NC(Zone 7b)

Cut that vacation short and get thee home, NOW!

We want pix, we want pix, we want pix..........

;-)

My first year growing these. They are soooo pretty!

Where are you Kenton? Have you been able to visit any gardens?

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

pdoyle that is a great photo! Is it the Zantedeschia aethiopica, or a cultivar?

Kenton I hope your callas are still in good order when you return, put them in pots and take them with you next time!
