July Buds n' Blooms

Trelleborg, Sweden

I think cumingiana has a coconut fragrance with a hint of citrus (orange) in it.

Purpureofusca is blooming again. It's one of my absolute favourites. Likes everything about it; fast growing, fairly early bloomer, strong coloured flowers, glossy leaves with spots (wouldn't mind if there were more spots though).

I was sitting next to it when it opened up, and I could here it "pop" while opening =))

Stunning, Lotta - what amazing pictures!!

Thank you!

Carol- being from Tromsø any month is the best month (kidding)....if you go in the summer months I can guarantee the midnight sun - IF the weather co-operates, we went the last week of May, first two weeks of June and it was incredible (temps in the 50's but the midnight sun was there). Hubby got the million dollar trip, tourists pay handsomely to see what he got for the cost of a ticket (talk to me about tickets when you are ready to book - if you have airline miles book about 10 months ahead to get guaranteed seats, and I can tell ya how to get from Oslo to Tromsø) AND how to get to Sweden the best way as well!

Gott att se lite norska här!!! =)))
(Feels good to see some Norwegian on the forum)

OH MY GOSH!!!
(äsch min jos!!!)

First, Lotta, I have had my cummingiana for probably 5 years and it has never ever bloomed for me - grows like a weed, though.

Second, Lotta, those pictures are absolutely gorgeous!! Someday, I'm going to be in the right place at the right time and hear something opening.

Finally, Becky, what a neat picture. Was that taken near Tromsø?

Ann

Trelleborg, Sweden

Nice shots Lotta! It's always a fun moment to be there when the flowers open.

I've just seen and heard the flowers of my onychoides open up. Now the gardenia fragrance is filling our living room.

Ann, yes, about 50km outside on the island right across. We came across them around 1AM and also a few herds!! :)
Are you Swedish?? :)

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Christina - that is beautiful! I can only dream and wish!! I did look at your website and you have the greatest collection! AND you take incredible photos! Kjempe flott!! :) (very nice)

Chowchilla, CA(Zone 10a)

Christina, that is simply stunning. I can smell it.

I think one of the reasons I am so attracted to this genus of Asclepiadaceae is that everything about them seems so lush. The foliage always looks so refreshingly green, and the blooms always look so moist and shiny. I know they don't always look that way outside of captivity - but in captivity they always looks like it has been drenched in pure, cool water. (OK, I am a nerd - but I can't help myself)

Becky, my adoptive family is Swedish and German (and I am as white of a cracker as one can get), and my last name is Strahm - but no, I have never learned the language nor been to Sweden. But, I am becoming adept at using the free online translater ;-)

Ann

Thanks for your comments!

Ann, "äsch min jos" ..??? Means someting like: "Don´t bother, my juice" *LOL*!!!!

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

ROTFL
Lotta, I didn't look too close at what she had written, and yes, you are so right!!
Ann, we are SO not laughing at you, we are laughing with you! On-line translation tools are notoriously bad.....( I work as a translator! )

Örebro, Sweden

Of course I'm not laughing AT Ann, but I thougt the translation was rather fun! Ann has made some translations earlier and they were pretty good ones.

I really hope I didn't offend you, Ann! That was absolutely not my intention!

Chowchilla, CA(Zone 10a)

Oh, boy am I laughing my pants off. I love the online translater!!!!
That is hilarious (please, feel free to laugh at me too!).
Hey, all you Swedes, Don't bother, my juice! (ROTFL)
I suspect I will be snickering about this all day.
Watch out, I might just come up with some more gems - got to keep you on your toes (fik till hålla du på din tå)!
P.S. I know this one didn't come out right, but it was so hilarious I had to include it!!
Still cackling,
Ann

Swedes, Don't bother, my juice! (ROTFL) tooooo funny!!! =0)

Okay - I ffffiiiiiiiiinnnaaaally have some contributions!
I'm pretty excited - - I have four, yes FOUR hoyas in bloom/bud - this is a FIRST for me! Oh wait, I guess if I count "Monster Hoya" out at my sis's house, that makes FIVE! WHOO HOOOO!

...first is Multiflora. This baby is absolutely LOADED with buds. This is the one Ann picked up for me a little while back. (thanks Ann! See, I'm taking good care of it!) It's hanging under a tree in my back yard and honestly, this thing is as big around as a garbage-can lid!

...next is a recent acquisition from The Pimpette - ISCHNOPSIS.
As she often does, Pimpette sent this one with buds on it. Most of them blasted =0( except for these two little guys....they seemed to hang on for dear life.
Looks kind of silly, doesn't it? But I was thrilled to see it bloom....

...last but not least, Obscura. She bloomed for the first time a couple months ago and hasn't stopped. =0)

It's pictures of flowers like these that are sooo teeeeeeny and tiny that really makes me appreciate the close-ups some of you get with your cameras!

Good pics, sis! And I saw that multiflora - it's HUGE!!

Örebro, Sweden

Congratulations to all your buds and flowers, Betsy!! They are all looking soooo great!!

Not much going on in the hoya world for me this summer. I think it is the lighting.....I either have to put them on my back porch which is shaded by a tree or in the scorching TX sun on the front porch. Since I don't want my hoyas to fry (everything practically fries in TX sun) I have them on the back porch. Not too many blooms though. My obscura has lots of buds, and I have a kentiana that has some new peduncles forming for the first time. I do believe I have a new peduncle on a kerrii too. Lots of new growth on all the rest. Oh and lacunosa....the reliable bloomer is budding up again. Off topic some....I have my cacti and succulent plants in the same general area except when it rains they get hit. Normally this isn't an issue but lately we have gotten a large amount of rain and I have lost several plants to rot. This is frustrating because I also have no other place to put them. I think I need a shadehouse or something just for all my plants!

:) Kim

Long Beach, CA

Kim...I put up some of that rippled shade roof material (like corregated plastic stuff..comes in 2x8 ft. sheets) over an area that I didn't want to get rain on it. I have some succulents, cactus, and sansevierias also that hate our winter rains, so I keep them under that. If you can find a way to cover them with that stuff, they love it. It comes in types that lets light through but not rain so you can set up an area in the sun and it also serves as a shade area. You can cut it to size too. A lot of people cover their patios with it. It is perfect for plant lovers.

Oh, Hooooooooooraaaaaaay Betsy!!!
The two blooms that held on for dear life on the ischnopus are absolutely adorable.
Show us a picture of the whole multiflora plant - I want to see how big it's getting - I thin ours are growing and blooming in tandem.

Hey, Betsy, that looks just like mine ;-)

Thank you Carol - good idea! I am going to repot it too, since I don't know how long it's been.

WOnderful plants and blooms everybody. I love that wonderful diversifolia Lotta, glad to see her blooming little face again. She is on order for me, and a few of her close related friends.

Betsy is your obovata reblooming? Mine has only bloomed once for me this year, I am dissapointed it hasn't bloomed again. Congrats on your blooms. I need to talk to Awanda about sending you to much sunshine, it has been cloudy and raining for a week.

Trelleborg, Sweden

I got to see juanngoina open up today. I wish the flowers wouldn't reflex. They are much prettier when they are just opened.

Oh my gosh Christina, this hoya is beautifull. I received cuttings of H. juangualana, are these two different hoya's, maybe collected by the same Juan?

Edited to say. My spelling was way off on this name. I do have cuttings of H. juannguoiana. And what a beauty it is. I can't wait for her to bloom.

WHOOOOO HOOOOO Betsy!

Love the H. purpureofusca too! Wish mine would bloom!

Chowchilla, CA(Zone 10a)

Oh, Christina ... you cruel, cruel woman :-)
There you go, showing me a beautiful photo of a beautiful bloom. Now I have to put that H. juanngoina down on my "must have someday" list too.
You are very very naughty (thank the heavens!!!).
Ann

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Lol @ you, Karen.....I have a feeling it *will* happen again, and often, now!!
This is technically a "June Bloom"....and danged if I didn't forget which plant it came from (I know it's one of two....a relatively common one sold by EA....they're at home and I'm not).

Thank goodness for plant tags!

It's the first bloom for this plant...I've had it about 2 years.

Would someone mind verifying it's ID if you know what it is, though?
