Charities

Denver, CO(Zone 6a)

What charities do you give to and why? (In time or money or other)
There are so many charities to give to.

I usually give to

Colorado Greyhound Adoption because I love this group and have adopted 4 wonderful greys from them
Denver Dumb Friends league (despite adopting one of the most obnoxious kitties in the universe)
American Cancer Association because everyone is touched by this disease
ACLU because I like our civil liberties and would like to keep them
Heifer Organization - I love how they use the money - buy giving animals to those who need them so that they can have a better life.
Disabled American Vets - because they have been instrumental in helping me getting benefits

Victoria, TX(Zone 9b)

United Way because it's through work, and I've visited some of the organizations they distribute the money to
A cat-rescue friend (by paying her bill at the vet she uses) because she gives out the cats free with full shots & altering

Dillonvale, OH(Zone 6a)

Disabled American Veterans (my first husband is one)

Easter Seals (they did wonders for my daughter)

Wishes and Rainbows (a very little known organization that helps people with syringomelia and Arnold Chiari Malformations... for more info please contact me.. these people helped us when Tori was diagnosed with ACM1 we would have been lost without them)

March of Dimes (preventing birth defects is a wonderful cause IMHO)

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

This might be a good time to remind all veggie and fruit growers about your local food bank.
When you get overloaded with Zucchini, tomatoes or any edibles, think of the food banks/pantries.
I've already made my first trip with 2 big bags of strawberries.

Alexandria, IN(Zone 6a)

Second Harvest food bank
Anderson Christian Center
Disabled Vets
Grant County Rescue Mission
Southwestern Indian Relief Council
St. Jude Children's Hospital
Salvation Army.

south central, WI(Zone 5a)

Best Friends-no kill animal shelter in Kanab Utah-availible to all.
Local four foot rescue-Kindred Spirits
Second Harvest
Salvation Army
Humane Society of the United States

Belleville, IL(Zone 6b)

I used to give to a no kill shelter in NY until they had a series on TV of them and I saw how it was geared to making money more than finding homes for animals that needed homes. They seemed more interested in healthy young dogs that would move easily.
I give to the March Of Dimes, because my brother's daughter was born with a birth defect.
I give to the American Lung Association because my neice and nephew have Asthma and do a fund raiser walk every year.
I give to a local no-kill shelter.
Heart Association because there is hereditary heart disease in the family that killed my Dad at only 39 years of age.
A group called Purple Heart I save my clothes and household items for their thrift shop here.
If possible I like to keep other local charities in mind as then I can see the dollars at work.

Citra, FL(Zone 9a)

AngelSong, that's so great of you, to pay the vet bills! I give to
Friends for Life (animal rescue and low cost sterilization in Eureka, CA)

4paws4us - that would be me, but I'm not an official charity. The dogs just keep on coming and I've got 12 at the moment, 5 are "officially" mine. My critters are not free, however. I get reimbursed for what I spend for surgeries (discounted) and vaccinations, and if a pup is too young for surgery, the new owner has to put down a deposit with friends for life for the surgery (only $40!) All the other expenses so far have been provided by us. Recently an angel came through through Friends for Life for my flea treatment bill. That was a huge help!

Humane Society of the US

WWF

Nature Conservancy

Hoopa Animal Society - I cook for the volunteer vetrinarians and techs who come here to do surgeries on local pets through the HSUS.

Can't afford any more! :-)
