We in south florida are all done with our usual garden, i do have some eggplants left. It is much to hot for blossoms to set on most vetables. So to keep a garden going i have recently started growing gourds, it is a double ended hobby. growing them is one thing , blossoms set well in warm weather. The other part is making bird houses and other items out of them.my only problem is mildew. I have been trying milk and i think it may work, if not i will try some neem.
all the best
What are you eating out of your garden?
Onions. FarmerDill guided me to the correct variety and culture. I started them from seed for the first time. I used to do sets.
Andy P
What variety? I can never get onions to grow here - just scallions and I don't like them.
I was afraid someone would ask. Now I have to find the pack.
Oh Yes, Copra. 107 days from putting out.
I'm only picking the wimpy ones now, as I need them. I think they need another couple of weeks. They are for winter storage.
I put 125 seedlings (half the pack) in the ground and lost very few.

We loved our own onions when we grew them. Now that space has somehow gone to daylilies - hmmm - I wonder how that happened.
So far we're eating our own fresh garlic, snow peas, cabbage, cherry (Sweet One Million -we liked Sweet One Hundred better) tomatoes and awaiting the bumper main tomato crop of Celebrity and Big Beef. String beans any day now.
had my first ripe tomato today!!a grape tomato!!! called my father to come over and share it. we cut it in half so we each got a taste. like john denvers song "ain't nothing in the world like homegrown tomatoes"
Is that the one that starts out with....."Inch by inch, row by row,
gonna make that garden grow..."?
I've eaten lettuce, radishes, tomatoes ,zucchini, cucumbers,
corn, broccoli, arugula, strawberries, and of course, my herbs.
I'm waiting on more tomatoes and my eggplant...I can't wait. The difference in taste from market veggies is unbelievable!!

Welcome surfagurl!
It is now official! Everyone in Ronkonkoma is on DG!
Amazing Ronkonkoma! Welcome to DG surfa!
Thanks for the welcome, Dave47 and pirl!!
Surfa - do you Ronkonkomaites all know each other?
Pirl - - I'm not familiar with anyone else in Ronkonkoma who is on DG.
I know there's a way to get a list. Let me try and I'll get back to you ASAP.
Go to the tab EXTRAS, then scroll down to OTHER SUBSCRIBERS IN YOUR AREA and you'll get a list of them.
I think I'll move to big Ronk country - must be free internet.
Welcome surfa - I live in the midwest, I think I'm lost.
Al - anywhere near Green Bay?
I'm about 40 miles from Green Bay.
There is another person from Menasha on DG and she's even been to my house, and then went back into hiding.
Pirl - are you stopping by?
No. You were out when I was there, back in '63.
Yeah - I..I...I...had to step out.
Been 7 or 8 years now since I was in the Northeast. Through Logan on my way to Maine.
I thought perhaps you hadn't been born yet!
No I wasn't - couple years away, can't rush greatness ;)
Ahem: now about that greatness - you did predict a cold front, did you not? Were you predicting I'd be standing in front of the refrigerator, Al?
Must have got lost in the mail. Nice here today - I'm keeping that.
Al, You are a youngin'. Have you reached the big 4-0 yet?
Al ~ The big 4-0 is not that bad....I actually liked it when I hit it a FEW years back. Went to a friends 40th Bday party on Sunday, everything was black! LOL His wife got him a sympathy card, and the balloons she bought were black too but it was the sayings on them that got me. One said: "Roses are red, violets are blue, I'm laughling like hell cause I'm younger than you!" The other one was the Grim Reaper: "Don't worry...I'm only here for the cake." His buddies at work got him a cake and a "Princess Crown" which he wore on top of his hard hat. Here let me give you a visual: He's 6' 2" weighs 250-280 lbs. is an ex-marine has mookoo tattoos and is bald as an egg. This was a site to see!!! He took it all so well, just glad no one did that to me on my 40th.
Where in Maine did you travel too?
I don't know his age...BUT TODAY IS HIS BIRTHDAY!!!! Happy Birthday Al!!!!
Welcome Surfagurl - I'm a 'Ronkonkomite'. I live over by Motor Pkwy. If any of you are interested - Motor Pkwy is short for Vanderbilt Motor Pkwy. My house lies adjacent to the property that used to be the Vanderbilt's Summer Home. They built Motor Pkwy and actually had races on it http://www.nycgovparks.org/sub_your_park/historical_signs/hs_historical_sign.php?id=12916
I've been 40 for a year now, I've looked 40 for 10 years though.
I was at my brother's wedding in Bangor. Very much like the northwoods of WI there.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY AL! Wishing you cold fronts or hot fronts, your choice.
Happy Birthday, Al.
We had a "cold front" at our house last night. Wallingford (the tricky kitty) opened the refrigerator door, dumped out and ate a huge bag of cat chow. When I came downstairs in the morning - he wanted breakfast! Everything in the fridge was warm including the ice cream in the freezer - so I ate it for breakfast.
Note to myself - get a cat-proof lock for the refrigerator door.
AYankeeCat: and when you get the cat proof lock for the refrigerator the cat will find a Border Collie to unlock it!
Happy Birthday AL!!!!!!
AYankeecat ~ Thats one smart puddy-tat!!! But ice cream for breakfast?? I know, it was in honor of Al's birthday!
Happy Birthday, Al
Anita - -I know your area...actually I know Suffolk County very well. I'm a supervisor for a bus company and my driver's depend on me to get them to the right places. I was born and raised in Smithtown....I'm just a country girl....used to be only farms when I was growing up. (I sound like my Grandmother!! OH LORD!!) Pirl's area is beautiful also. I like out east.
Thanks! It is beautiful but still hot!
(Hot for gardeners, not for "have a seat in the shade and sip some lemonade" folk)
I used to live in Madison, which is hardly even in WI. I loved every minute there. It has beautiful countryside, farms, a great arboretum, the Capital, big farmer's market, a great college, lakes (LOTS of lakes), nice people. I kinda miss it.
Thanks for the birthday wishes, going out to eat tonight - so less dishes than usual for me ;)
F-i-n-a-l-l-y --- my first tomato!!!!!!! (Would have been better if I had waited until tomorrow to eat it.)
Great!
I should have taken photos of the crows as they stop in each day to take tomatoes. So nasty. DH is out buying more netting as I write.
