What are you eating out of your garden?

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I had my first garden salad tonight. Romaine from my neighbors yard, tiny Bulls Blood Beet greens, garlic "leaves", chives, a tiny scallion, a pinch of fresh oregano and fresh tarragon and some baby Bright Lights Chard. I can hardly wait for tomatoes!

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

The strawberries are about done, one cherry that the birds didn't get, broccoli, kohlrabi and pac choi.

Mid-Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5b)

Sugar snap peas, basil, everbearing strawberries, two blueberries and one raspberry. Lettuce. The zucchini are coming the peppers are coming. The tomatoes will never get here it seems. Candis

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Just lettuce and swiss chard for me. I was slow getting it started.

Mystic, CT(Zone 6b)

Dave, I'm with you- I left the maters in their pots because I was afraid they would drown. I usually plant snap peas and beans, but didn't get my seeds in due to health reasons. I have cukes that aren't ready yet, blueberries, lettuce, radish and strawberries ( I put them on top of my stone wall this year because they were eroding down the hill, and now they seem to be in a prime nesting location for some hungry chipmunks! Why do they only take one bite of each strawberry!!??

Clairton, PA(Zone 6a)

I harvested my first zucchini last week and grilled them on Sunday. Tomatoes, peppers, and squash are coming soon.

Walpole, NH(Zone 5a)

Buttercrunch and black seeded simpson leaf lettuce, beets, swiss chard, newzealand spinach, and one small picking of summer squash.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I had my very first blackberry tonight. It was a little tart but it was SO yummy.

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

I am starting to pick Blackberries, too. Yummy.
I had my first tomato last week, now I see more coming.

Gave my first Bull's Blood Beet to my neighbor for his dinner last night. Ate my first zucchini from my neighbor's garden - raw - try it. Had my first blueberry - but it wasn't very good - guess I should have waited. Sarahskeeper - I am SOOOOO jealous that you have ripe tomatoes. The only ones I have with color are sauce tomatoes and not that good to eat out of hand. Sigh.

Brownfield, ME(Zone 4b)

Had new potatoes and green beans for the 1st time last night. Have had cukes and trying to be patient for the tomatoes! Have made one batch of pesto, I didn't get basil in very early.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

I've had cherry tomatoes, bambino eggplant and zucchini

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

Yankee, You should plant Berpee's "4th of July" tomatoes. Better taste than Early Girl and 10 days earlier. Non-stop producer, too.
I just gave my new neighbor a potted one, with almost ripe ones on it.
Andy P

Oviedo, FL(Zone 9b)

We just ate all of my lettuce, since I only grew two potfuls {large 16" pots} and the plants began to bolt in the recent heat and all of the 4th picking of my raspberries, which were delicious every one! I don't grow too much in the way of veggies. My thyme, dill and basil are also online and have been used several times up to now. My neighbor built himself a raised bed of olympic proportions and put in 30 tomato plants of various types. I expect to get some of those.

Had sauteed Swiss Chard tonight and got some pretty good blackberries away from two gray birds that were very impatient with me interrupting their dinner.

Sarahskeeper: I will try 4th of July tomatoes next year.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I have a lettuce that was almost the only thing I planted early and it is still not bolting. I'll pass along the name after I look it up.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

I looked it up in the garden terms and botanary... what's bolting?

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

Yankee, Here are some 4th of July that I had in pots (left over seedlings) that I planted yesterday, I couldn't through them away.
I'm not staking these, I will let them grow on over turned trays. A test.
Pic taken today.

Those are beauts Andy! What do you do with your tomatoes?

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

Anita, mostly I eat them, lol.
Make chili and chicken cacciatore for the freezer. I give lots of them away, too.
I don't can or dry them.

OK - Andy - now I'm really, really jealous. I got one green sauce tomato today - it fell off and I froze it to make green tomato relish this Fall. None of the round tomatoes are anywhere near green. I went by the farmer's market in Trumbull last night and bought myself two, red "homegrown" tomatoes to hold me over.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Bolting is when your greens send up stalks to flower, or when it flowers. Is that just a CT term

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Hey - we call it "bolting" in CA, too.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Summer squash (crooked neck) , bluegerries, blackberries, salad mix lettuce, and 1 cherry tomato!

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Big, fat blackberries!

Mystic, CT(Zone 6b)

No tomatoes yet, lettuce bolted, blueberries getting eaten by squirrels, had a teeny nice black eggplant, but repotted and stupidly left on the deck in the sun. squirrel ate it.

Beans, cukes, radishes doing well.

Oviedo, FL(Zone 9b)

It's called "bolting" because it happens so quickly. the heat goes up and the lettuce "bolts" or throws a flower stalk and goes to seed. We had nearly a week of 90-100 degree temps and my lettuce was doing great until then. The lettuce gets bitter when it puts up the flower stalk. That's why I picked all of mine off and we had it for dinner the other night. I knew I was about to lose the plants to seed making.

Checked my records. The lettuce is green great raipds Simpson elite. I bought the seed from Johny's. It is still not showing a sign of bolting! Never had lettuce like this.

Mystic, CT(Zone 6b)

Great info Dave! That lettuce goes on the top of my list for next year, or maybe even a fall planting.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Dave ~ It's good lettuce cause it comes from Maine! LOL J/K But Johnny's Seeds is about 15 miles from me and I have never bought anything "bad" from them. Northern Hardy is a must for me and they have it!

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

A single fig from my fig tree that lives in my kitchen.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Pixie, That's cool. Is it worth visiting? I like Johny's, Select Seeds, and Territorial.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks - I had never heard of the term before.

Ronkonkoma, NY(Zone 6b)

Last night: Grape tomatoes mmmmmmmmmm.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Tonight: finally, cucumbers!!

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Blueberries

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Dave, yes...Johnny's is worth visting, in the spring the entire side of the building is blooming w/spring bulbs. Tulips everywhere!!!!!

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

Tristar strawberries from the new bed I planted this April.
I removed all the buds in Spring to let them get established and set runners. Now they are thanking me with a few berries. Lots of flowers too, so I should have them for a while.
Andy P

Mystic, CT(Zone 6b)

Strawbs, checked the blueberries on the riper bush, but they were all gone... and I think we will have cucumbers tonight and Brandywines tomorrow! Woohoo!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Can't find the paths to walk in my garden any more.
