A Red baby............

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

I also prefer the lower fatter calyx but I have also seen some that were too low. I have noticed on the ones I have that the flower wall seems to be stonrger on the ones with the low calyx. I really like most brug blooms because there is no doubt that I would tire of them if they all had the exact shape and size.

The color on your Red baby is very dark and pretty.

Pure Love is also a very pretty brug. I don't remember how much fragrance this one had but it sure looks like it would smell wonderful.

Tracey it is good to see you post. Returning to school is not one of the easiest things to do but I know that you will succeed. You will be finished before you know it and looking back you will be so glad that you did. Visit when you can here at DG's.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Isn't it great to see Tracey on here, Frannie. Like old times! Root is around too the last few days. Poor Tracey is going brugless until her studies are done. Then she will come roaring back I am sure.

Did you get Pure Love too, Frannie? I never see her on here. I wonder how many Tracey sent out.

Tonight I was noticing the fragrance in the courtyard Joan. And in my backyard, I can slways smell Arborea. My favorite fragrance in the world.

THANK YOU Marie, Delisa and Linda! I sure hope she stays so dark.

Kell, They are both just beautiful.
Will that Red take Hot, Humid Tennessee?
I have decided to have my old vegetable garden plowed under to plant more seedlings next year. To easy to get the veggies at the market. can't get the flowers. LOL

Kell, I am not sure whether or not I ever had Pure Love. If I did, I lost it before it bloomed because I would have remembered it blooming. I believe the only one I have of Tracey's now is Grandchild.

Wow! That is a very nice red. I haven't seen anything like that around here. Beautiful.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL IMCANADIAN ! Great name. Thank you Quyen.

Oh Frannie, I remember Grandchild. Suz and Tracey named that one for Gloria didn't they? Do you have a picture of her?

Truth be told, this seedling's form is not so great. She needs some aurea dust. LOL. I will say when the sun hits her, she is a knockout, like there is fire in your garden. The sun really intensifies her color.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3a)

Kellifornia Kopper when you get you own double orange!
I will stop now...

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

Kell, I took pictures of Grandchild a month ago but I cannot find them on my computer. I have hundreds of pics and I really do need to organize them better and move them to CD's or my external hard drive. It seems that my older pics are better organized because I easily found 2 on my external hard drive. One is Tracey's and one is Root's. I hope neither mind that I used their pictures. Grandchild has pretty serrated-edged leaves and has a medium sized yellow bloom. Mine is in a 30 gallon pot and has never gotten over 5'. I did start a cutting of it in the spring and I planted it in the ground to see what it would do there.

Kell, my Susanne X Red seedlings are doing well down in the swamp. No blooms yet but I still have 4 more growing months.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Gee, Kell...I think those were the seeds that never made it....wink wink :>). Sure could use some red around here.... Hummmmmm?

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Kell, I know this isn't anything near your Red, but I wanted to tell you this. Remember the seedpod I had growing on my sister's Sanguinea? I wrote to Jeanne and she told me to give it 9 months. So, I opened it up a couple of days ago and got over 100 seeds and they really look good.

So, Kell, Jeanne, when is the best time to plant them? Do I want them to dry out good before I do?

Thank you both for the help. Jeanette

Tyler, TX(Zone 8a)

Kell please put in a nut shell all the talk about this beautful red brug. Good and Bad for us new ones. thank you Joan

Plant them now but keep them in the shade. You're probably getting the hot, hot weather that we're getting in BC. You can plant them fresh or dry them, doesn't really matter. Dry the ones you're keeping for later.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Joelle! You are good.

Thank you, Quyen!

Oh Trish, I hope you get good ones for sure!!

Carol, I will get it together. I actually sent out 4 boxes yesterday after procrastinating forever. I am embarrassing to myself.

Jeanette, plant them now. At least I always like to plant seed as fresh as possible. I wash them then dry them till I can peel them without the slime. What fun!! Refresh my memory, was it self pollinated or did you cross it with another brug?

Frannie, I remember that brug now. Thanks so much for getting me those pcitures. I bet Root does not have it anymore since he moved. So many great brugs are getting lost in the shuffle! I am adding Pure Love to boxes I send out in the hopes it stays alive, I just wish I had the time to send more out.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Jeanette, Jeanne is the sang expert, knows much more than I do....so follow her advice!!

Joan, you mean what I like and not like about this seedling? It is all a personal preference as far as looks go.

I personally do not find long necks attractive, I prefer no neck but a long calyx to cover it. I also like longer tendrils, not too long but not too short. LOL. I really enjoy a good flounce to the skirt, so far this brug has none.

This is the first flush so it could really change still.

Other things I will look for this season with it:
Does it root easily from cuttings
Does it pod easily and does its pollen make pods.
Is it resistant to mites or is it a mite magnet.
Do caterpillars love it?
Are the leaves attractive and a good size in relation to the size fo the flowers.

Does it sucker nice straight suckers.
Does it form a good full canopy.
How many flushes a season and are they full flushes.
Do the blooms collapse in the heat and if so how much.
How long do the flowers last.
Is there a pleasant fragrance.

There are probably more, but these are a good sampling of what I look for not only in my seedlings, but in all the brugs I grow. Others probably have their own list of what they find of interest and importance to them.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Kell I have high hopes the seedling I have from your Red crosses. They are 3 months old now and a couple have branched already at only a foot tall and the main trunk as big as my thumb. DH got 10 in the ground for me the other day. They were root bound in 1 gal pots so they should really take off now especially if we start getting some rain. Hoping for some summer time late afternoon thunder showers. Doesn't look like anything else is going to get us out of this drought

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Thanks guys, Jeanne I will plant them now. I am assuming you don't peel yours. I know you do Kell. But, mine didn't have any slime. They came out just brown and dry. Jeanne had told me to be careful they didn't get mushy and they didn't.

No, I didn't cross them with anything. Just one Sang to another. Come to think of it, I just might peel a few and plant some of each. See how each does.

Sorry I butted in on your thread Kell.

Kell thank you so much. I have copied this for my book so I can understand more of what make a good brug. I understand people like different thing but this is a start to realy understanding what is good and bad. Thank you again for taking the time. Joan

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh Joan, I do not know much but what I do know I am so happy to share. Mostly once you grow a few of these. You will figure out in a year or 2, what is what on your own. They are very easy. If you have one that always has mites for example, by your second year, you will toss it more than willingly.

Also in the beginning, they all look the same. But as you keep looking at them, you will start to notice big differences between them. And then you will become more selective according to the traits you find appealing. Though it is funny, now I have almost come full circle, and am now thinking they all do really look the same. LOL

Oh Donna, I hope you get great ones!! Is something eating your leaves? So no rain? That is so hard. I get no rain here normally so I water hours and hours every week.

Jeanette, butt away. It always makes things more intersting as fun things come up to learn about. I hope you do that littele experiment and let us know which way was better for you. In the olden days, Susie always had us doing experiments. We had so much fun.

Kell, it is good to see Tracey popping back in here.

I am one she sent Pure Love out to. I just love her "big" blooms that are fat in the caylx too. I had one bloom last year that was a six-pointer. And I also like her serrated leaves.

Here are a couple of pics of her.

oh yes I am in bug haven here in the country. Once I get the birds established they should take care of the problem. I have tried looking at night with a flash light but never find anything. I don't use pesticides. Still no rain ;-(

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

Kell, I have one of your Red crosses that didn't bloom for me last year. It didn't even get to make a Y. I cut the top off and rooted it over winter. I am still waiting for it to Y. I can't remember off the top of my head which one it is, but If it blooms I will send a picture.

Tyler, TX(Zone 8a)

I see what you mean Pure Love is beautiful. I like the calyx over her but the red has the long green lines down the flower it is hard to judge which I like better. I thank all of for pictures they sure help. I would love to see more pictures of the red one to see what happen to her. Kell what would happen to her if you crossed her with Pure Love? Would she take on more of P.L. shape and turn P.L. red? It is so much fun to watch what happens. Joan

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

You know Joan, that is not such an odd thought. And what is wrong with the Red baby, sure isn't wrong with Pure Love. I was thinking a yellow aurea to go on Pure Love but your match is much better than mine!! THANK YOU Lady! And what I am thinking is I would get a stronger orange or yellow PL. But I could get both and even a longer PL. You could get anything! LOL Which is why it is so much fun. If the cross takes you will have to help me grow them out.

Here is a Creamsickle X Red cross that just bloomed yesterday. A little hinky but its first blossom so we shall see. The color is intriguing to me.

Oh Donna it must be so hard to leave an established, hard worked yard and move to a new one and start all over. I am so sorry you are having a tough time. I just know though that in a couple of years it will be a haven for all sorts of animals, butterflies and even ducks. Quack Quack. How are your babies speaking of quacking?

Patrica, I am sure hoping for a dark one for you!! Thanks for growing some of mine out.

Hello David. I was telling Tracey the other night how I never tire of Pure Love. She was shocked to hear how it is so gold hilighted here. And all the blooms are, not just a few. Are your blooms all white or do you have the gold touch too? Your pictures are just great.

Tracey and Donna are a lot alike. They both share the good stuff so freely. Thanks you guys!

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Kell only 2 of the 5 babies made. They were escape artist. I ended up with raw bleeding fingers after 2 days of having to go around the entire chain link pen and putting 1/2" mesh wire. The door I had put chicken wire on when I ran out of the mesh and they were getting through that too lol. I was ready to pull my hair out trying to figure out where they were getting out from. They are all fluff lol and much smaller than you would think from looking at them

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh Donna, I am so sad to hear it. Did they go to duck heaven or do you think they may return?? Sounds like rats, who can get thru the tiniest of holes because they have no backbones or some such weird thing.

Tyler, TX(Zone 8a)

Kell Creamsickle X Red did make a good color. It will be interesting to see what color she puts out after a big flush. I would love to grow some of the seeds out of True Love and Red. I think it will be fun to see what happens with those two. Good luck. Joan

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

Kell, The seedling I have looks like it is labeled GR ( I could never figure out which one that was X Red. So what is the GR?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL, my writing is not the best. Can you send me a pic of it? Maybe Golden Lady?? I had that cross

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

They went to duckie heaven. They are very susceptable to bacteria when they are newly hatched and i guess they came in contact with something when they escaped and were running around the yard. I am surprised something didn't get them. I would have to get them back in the pen 5 or 6 times a day. I knew when they were out because momma would call them if the dogs were out or if I got close to the cage

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

Donna, I am sorry to hear about your ducklings, but I am so happy that a couple did make it. I bet they have grown since you posted pics of when you got them.

Kell, I like the color of your Creamsickle x Red. I agree with you and look forward to seeing what the next blooms look like.

Crumpler, WV

Kell, my Pure Love gets some golden highlights but not like yours. It is probably an environmental thing.

But talking about her golden highlights has got the hybridizer wheels rolling around in my head. I have a seedling that has a good golden color, Pure Love might be the recepient of some of its pollen.

Donna, I am so sorry to hear about your baby ducklings. Maybe you should get some hardware cloth and put it along the bottom of the pen. Put it so far up the main fence and along the top of the ground or bury it several inches deep too. Last year my step-father had some minks kill almost every one of his chickens. We had to put hardware cloth over the entire floor of the coop and up the sides a little bit. And it will also keep out any rodents too. He has not lost anymore since.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Sorry Kell about putting this in your thread. We got a little lite rain yesterday yea!!!!!!!!!!!!

David DH put down hardware down when he built it about to 1 1/2' out. He even went around and made rebar pins to hold it down all over. A bear would probably the the only thing that could dig it up. We also lined all around the edges of the cage with big pine logs and I have been getting some plants planted around it too, to help make shade where it comes through the worst. One half of the roof has plywood for a dry area and the other side has shade cloth and I have shade cloth down the south side. The cage is 7' W x 13' L x 6' H
