Picture uploads to PlantFiles missing???

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Hi Dave

This evening I uploaded a number of pictures to the PlantFiles but when I look at my pending pictures column this evenings contributions aren't there?!? I'm sure I did it right.....I remember reading they were accepted into the moderators queue. Can you find them???

Thank you

Lilypon I had the same thing happen, we are a few hours ahead and I did two around 10.30pm, checked my info and there were no images pending. I had hoped they would turn up as sometimes things do, but at 2.30 pm next day they are missing. It took such a long time for the first image to load too, second was quicker.

They do sometimes take a long time if in a queue, it seems the further away you are, the posting gets put behind others. I have at times waited 20 minutes for a posting to go in a thread with a pic, only to find one person has put in several pics while I have been waiting.

I don't think that should have made a posting to disappear altogether though, there must be a problem. There seems to be plenty of pics on the daily PF posting, unless they were already pending.

Wallaby, when you're talking about your posts getting put behind others, are you talking about Plant Files pics, or regular posts? With regular posts I don't think anybody's posts get put behind others, especially not based on where you're located, if things are slow to show up I can only think that it's something with your internet connection and the person who snuck in ahead of you probably had a much faster connection. Or if your browser isn't set to automatically refresh pages then it might seem like it takes long for your post to show up.

I'm unable to upload pictures this morning... it could be the image file/processor is down for some reason.

I uploaded some photos yesterday afternoon and they seem to have disappeared also. They are not in the plant listings where I uploaded them to. Nor are they in the "pending" area. Strange.

ecrane3, I was comparing uploading pictures to a Thread to the time it took to upload in Plantfiles. I also stated that I did not think the time it took to load would have made it disappear altogether. However, an overload may do anything I am not aware of.

I have noticed that there have been pictures uploaded by one person, several of them within a few minutes, in the same space I have started and finished to upload a single picture to a Thread.

I do think it is a matter of distance sometimes, not necessarily the server. I say this because of the ebay sneakers who place bids on behalf of members. They state that they place their operations as close as possible to the server so they are not held in queues, or something to that effect. I do not use these people, but read this information on a link provided by someone trying to advertise their services.

The size of your files and the type of connection you have play a big role in how fast your images upload.

However, yesterday I asked Dave to make a tweak to the PF upload process for comments and photos, and I'm afraid our "enhancement" resulted in some lost photos. Dave has indicated he believes the process is fixed now, so if you'd like to test it, upload a photo then check your member page "queue" to make sure it's there.

I'm so sorry for the inconvenience - in retrospect, I should have tested the new process more rigorously at the time he and I were working on it. (I lost a few PF photos, too - if that's any consolation.)

I'm sure you're right about the Ebay thing, but any distance factor is probably only going to be a few seconds at most, on Ebay I could see that would make a difference, but on DG I still think if you're posting something and someone else is able to post several pics in the same time it takes you to post one I still think it's because they have a faster internet connection. I've had similar experience as you with things posting slow, but it's because I have a dialup and some others have faster connections.

Thank you Dave/Terry I just uploaded one now and the picture is in the queue.

ecrane3, sometimes my pics load in a few seconds, other times they take a long time. I can't get Broadband, but have a good computer. I find certain times of the day are very busy (here 5 to 7pm, 9.30 to 10.30pm), other times not. Come 2.30am it gets very slow, and I don't think many people here would be using the lines, but America will most likely be coming on line as most places are 6 to 8 hours behind. I am on AOL, so it's a bit of both, telephone lines and Internet provider. It is usually in the early hours of the morning when it takes the longest time to upload pictures. Of course if a lot of people are loading up onto DG then that will also make a difference, there has to be a queue, and it was the early hours when I saw several pictures go on from the same person and some others, about 1 minute apart each, while mine took 20 minutes. I have 3.0Gb dual channel HTP4 Sata.

Maybe I misunderstood what you were saying in your original post, I thought you were saying that DG servers gave priority to other people's posts over yours because you were from farther away and I don't believe that's the case at all. There definitely could be a queue of posts here during busy times, but whoever got here first would have their post show up first. If yours takes longer to get here and you're saying your connection speed is fine, then it must be the route that it has to travel between your computer and showing up at DG server. I think this is probably what happened when you saw other people's things go through in a minute when yours took 20, wasn't DG that made yours take 20 min but was probably a jam-up somewhere between your internet provider's server and DG, and the person who was able to get their pics on in a minute didn't travel on that same path through cyberspace. Hope that makes sense and sorry to argue with you over this, I just didn't want people thinking that DG was prioritizing some people's posts over others!
