Debbie,

You posted this on another thread. Is this for this year?

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

It's October 7th, not November....my bad.

Anyone planning on going?

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Super duper stinky now. Got all those roses and the datura planted. Then I thinned out ll of that ruellia and spread it along the borders of that bed. Whew! Lot's of work. I still need to get 8 agapanthus to go around the two trees in that bed and one more rose bush then that bed will be done!

Next task.......the big front bed that I am just absolutey clueless what to do with. It's ugly and scraggly and needs a major overhaul

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I didn't post the original thread on that other, just the link--that is not just a DG meet--mainly that other garden site swap. The one in Nov is the DG RU.

Dallas DG swap is same day.

Yes, I meant the link. That's not a DG? Have you ever been to it? I'm curious if it's fun and worth going to. The DG RU in November sounds like fun too just don't know if I'm up for that kinda road trip. But it's probably worth it to meet everyone I've been talking to. I'd really like to be able to put a face to the names.

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Yes--I've been to it but not in the last 3 years--like I said, its mainly GW folks, or at least it used to be.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Well, I think I'd rather be with the DG folks! Everyone has been reall cool and fun.

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I'm sure there will be some there. The person who posted it for one.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

I'm really confused, who's GW?

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

I dunno. I'm a newbie.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm thinkin' it's the other guys Garden Web...

That is so pretty. It looks different than the ones I've seen. Is that a double bloom?

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Yes! and I didn't expect that at all!

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

what a nice surprise! I planted mine tonight. Any advice for specific care?

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

Beautiful!

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

So far very easy to grow- this is the 1st year I have been growing. My inoxia are from seed I planted myself. I have found that they like sun although could use shade from hot afternoon sun. They are prone to be attacked by those awful tomato horn worms so watch the foliage! I will also tell you that all parts of the plant are toxic- that I knew but got more information - that should help. In my opinion very easy plant.

I just bought some Datura, red angel, maybe it was a Brug, seeds on Ebay. I can't wait for them to bloom. They're red!

Did you start them outside in the ground or a pot?

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

My neighbors across the street have two. One, planted against their house that is yellow and full and lush....it must be 10 feet tall and 6-8 feet wide. The other, a pink like I purchased today, is planted by the curb with nothing to support it and it's very straggly. They're both beautiful but the difference in health is amazing.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Very useful info. April, do you have any pets? If so, do they seem to naturally stay away from the plant. Animals have an instinct....sometimes. I have 3 cats that like to nibble on grass and my dog seem to like to nibble at herbacious plants. She tries to eat the ruellia so I'm a little worried.

Fly-Girl, I've never seen it in red. Bet that's gorgeous.

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

I started the seeds in the house- it was kind of cold when I started some of them and when I start seeds outside in pots they tend to dry out to quickly for me. All the datura are growing in pots and my dog doesn't bother them. She tends to like to eat grass and dig in the dirt. Now if I fertilize w/ fish emulsion I have to watch her because she will literally eat dirt! Dumb dog, but she's sweet. I have found that they like a fair amount of water but bounce back quickly if they dry out. They do grow pretty quick so you will need to pot those seedling up regularly if you plant them in a pot.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

What is fish emulsion? Does it make the yard stink? Very interesting.

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Imagine what you would get if you put a bunch of dead fish into a blender and turned it on "Liquify" and then you know what fish emulsion is and what it smells like. It is a super fertilizer and you dilute it w/ water but there is no escaping the smell. It goes away but the 1st few days are really awful!

I have also used liquid seaweed and it doesn't smell but still feel that the fish emulsion is about the best.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

Fish emulsion is REALLY stinky. Once it gets in your nose it's there for the rest of the day. It's kind of like being in a bait shop. But, it is good stuff for plants.

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Yeah it does stick w/ you doesn't it? I think there is one brand that is supposed to not smell- don't know the name of it. The brand w/ Alaska or Alaskan in the name is really stinky and stinky for a long time, fertilome's fish emulsion only stinks for like a day.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Ladies, if you don't hear from me tonight, I have either been locked in the shed or sent to a loony bin. I just bought a big ole' flat of the PRETTIEST yellow cosmos I have ever seen. I'm dead meat.

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, and if you get it on your hands, the smell is with you for at least 12 hours. No amount of washing them seems to work. Luckily my dogs don't eat the dirt when I use it though one follows me around like he's missing out on something. And one tip.... if you use a hose end sprayer, make sure it's not a windy day. If it is make sure you are not down wind from the direction you are spraying! :-0

Maybe I need to be locked up but, does anyone else think it has a slight sweet smell.? Not something you like, but it's a different fishy smell than say an old dead fish on the shore of the lake.

Anyway, back to Kristi's original question... It's a high Nitrogen organic fertilizer that's perfect for giving your plants a boost, but not burning them.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Sure sounds like Nam Pla......fermented fish sauce used in Thai and Vietnamese cuisine. I wonder........

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

K, tell DH that your neighbor gave them to you. She decided she didn't really think they were that pretty and well...you didn't either but you took the poor things anyway;)

Sweezel, I don't really notice the sweet smell, wish I did, I might use it more.

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Well, it's not "sweet" enough to make me want to use it a lot, but I'd much rather smell it than a dead fish on the lake shore anyday. I need to use it more to, but just hate the lingering smell on my hands. I need to remember to use gloves, but if you saw my hands you'd see the gloves rarely come out.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

I'm not sure I could bring myself to use it. Bad smells have an ill effect on me.

Sweezel, I wonder if our hands look the same.

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Fish emulsion is not a high nitrogen fertilizer--its very low compared to synthetic fertilizers

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Hands that belong on someone 10 years older? Callousses on your fingers and palm from pulling weeds? Dry, with dirt permanently etched into the fine lines of your fingers? Short nails with rough, peeling cuticles? And yes my hands and nails get scrubbed with the nail brush.

Staci
.... who's now digging in her purse for the hand lotion after inspecting her hands.

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Sorry, I was thinkin in relation to other Organic Fertilizers and also thinking in relation to the ratio of N-P-K. High Nitrogen, low Phosphorus & Potassium. I know Blood Meal and a few others are higher, but they have a limited use.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Yup, our hands are the same. Now I have to get my lotion out.

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Kristi I think you are on to something w/ that fermented fish sauce! No it's way, way worse- yes there is a slightly different smell than those fish at the lake but I wouldn't say it was sweet- don't know how I would classify it. It does stink!

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Ok, where does one find the Yard Nam Pla?

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Knolan,

Was reading this thread...listening to everyone's suggestions, and I kept thinking BULBINE...orangey-yellow would look great. Then I realized how long the thread is....scrolled to the end...and you are trying pots of bulbine! I planted b. about 2 months ago, and they have more than doubled! I'm careful to snap off (no real head to "deadhead"??) the wands (again, I'm new to this plant too!) of spent flowers, as I was told they will be able to produce more that way. I will always plant bulbine now...

Its loose, spikey flowering habit will be a great contrast to your other plant forms.

I've attached a pic of my bulbines...hope it's the right one!

Connie,

Very pretty bed!!!! It's so lush. You Austinites have such beautiful plants. I want to live in the Hill Country.

Yes, I ended up planting the bulbine and I'm really pleased with the results. I divided it a little before planting so I'm glad you said it spreads fast. That's exactly what I was hoping for. My daughter thinks I need a splash of one more thing in that bed but I don't think there will be any more room. Although, I did thin out the ruellia quite a bit so there's a little space but I don't want anything to get too smushed.

Keep those pretty pictures coming!
