Color Coordination Help Requested

Oh I think that would be nice! It's very cheery! I like something that is bright and catches your eye! and coreopsis will catch your eye!

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

They both look very pretty! So, you didn't take the coreopsis back? I have to re-think my plan.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

fly-girl, yes, I slept on it and took them out of the car in the morning. They are such happy, smiley little buggers. Plan to plan to change your plans........

I think I'm going to like the bulbine there....like the spiky grass in contrast to the curly pom poms. CJ, I'm thinking the African Iris will be just way too big for that little spot. Whaddya' think?

Oh, and eclectic decor? I have a pterodactyl hanging from my ceiling when you walk in the front door. And a beautiful wooden bat hanging from my ceiling by my couch. And a giant iron lizard on one wall. My daughter says I'm "funky".

Well, gotta go clean and cook. Time to mop the pulled pork and then the kitchen floor! Talk to ya'll on Sunday after I've pulled up the vegetable garden (maybe....we'll see how tired I am). Who knows....I'm so addicted to this DG stuff I might be peeking in here every hour or two tonight.

Ya'll have fun!
Kristi

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

You could do the white, but not the yellow. The bulbine will be pretty once it all comes up uniformly. It is just in that nursery stage right now - kinda straggly.
Now get to work!!

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Thought ya'll would get a laugh out of this. I went over to my best friend's this afternoon to take her some plants I had dug up and guess what's blooming in her front yard? Just guess.......I white Dietes. Guess who's getting some?

My search is over. Now, I need to find a spot for it. Yippee!!!! It has been a good day after all.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

That's great!! Just push those bulbine over to one side and put the Dietes next to them.
RU rested up yet? I know it was a great party! Did you remember to ask her about the Brattons?
Epi on the way....
CJ

Idiot I am! Brattons work with Harris County....Never mind.....

Funny you mention that. I did remember to ask. My sister didn't recognize the name but my brother said he knows a Kim Bratton....don't know if they're related.

I am rested up pretty good although I stayed up WAAAAY to late reading....just one more chapter, just one more chapter. I'm reading "Memoirs of a Geisha". Saw the movie but the book is so much more developed. I can actually "smell" the gardens as the author describes and see the colors of the kimono. Stunning story. Wouldn't be surprised if I stay up through multiple chapters tonight as well.

Party was awesome. Thanks for asking.

I LOVED that book! Haven't seen the movie yet. I'm so afraid I'll be disappointed. I usually am after I read the book....

Soon after I'd read the book, I was in an airport book store, looking around for something to read on the plane. This woman, who was also looking, recommended a book to me - said her daughter had read it and given it to her - that she thought I would enjoy. Now I had just read "Memoirs of a Geisha", so I thought nothing of it... Bought the book, got on the plane, and gee whillikkers (jeeze, I wish Dave had spell check!) it was not of the same type at all!!! I should have known better, I guess. It was "Diary of a Call Girl". Stupid, eh? Never did manage to get far in that one. Think it landed in a trash can in the destination airport.... If they make it, don't see the movie! LOL
CJ

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Hahahahaha...can't tell you how many books I've given up on midway through as well. I have another one that I highly recommend...completely different. "Texas Tears and Texas Sunshine" by Jo Ella Powell Exley. It's actual writings of Texas Pioneer women and their struggles back in the 1800's. Will bring you to tears. I've read, and re-read their stories over and over. I'd be happy to send if you can't find.

The movie "Memoirs" will disappoint now that you've already read the book. It's good, but if you see the landscape as your reading and see the world she is in, it just can't be replicated in film. It's been awhile since a book has been able to take my breath away and this one does.

"Diary of a Call Girl".... sounds like "The Nanny Diaries."

Has anyone else received a private D-Mail from "Ursula" in Chile? If you have, does anyone know anything about this? It may very well be legitimate and I may just be cynical.......looking for your thoughts.

Check it out on Dave's Forum.

Have you read any of Amy Tan's books?

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

Check out Ursula 's home page. Member since 2001 and quite active....

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

alright.....so it's "cool"....I'm happy to contribute just never recieved one of those messages here. Only a member since May so I'm a newbie on this particular subject (and many others as well)....I'm more than willing to help out any particular cause but I'm wary from past experiences. (I was the SL treasurer for the Salvation Army for 13 years and I've had many wonderful experiences and some really questionable ones....Houston "ate us up" a year and a half ago...we're no longer our own division). Learned a lot from that experience! I was blessed.

No, I haven't read any Tan books. Please, give me some ideas.....I'm in need of many more good reads.

Did she ask for a donation??? That's not kosher... Copy it to my d-mail, OK? Sounding fishy...

If you like 'Memoirs' I think you will like Amy Tan. She wrote 'The Joy Luck Club' - her first, which I loved. (The movie was just OK) Then I read 'The Kitchen God's Wife', 'The Bonesetter's Daughter', and am trying to find time to read 'The Hundred Secret Senses'. I haven't been traveling a whole lot - and that is when I get most of my reading done. 'Memoirs' has a Japanese background; Amy Tan's novels are Chinese/American. They seem to start with conflict & misunderstanding between the Chinese/American daughter and her mother, who was born in China but is now living in the USA. Something happens that forces the daughter to go to China and while there she learns about her family background, which finally gives her insight into her mother's way of thinking. Very moving stuff.... Totally foreign to our western way of thinking and understanding. Like 'Memoirs'.

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Ceejay, loved Amy Tan's book and also thought the movies were pretty close to the book- always a complete w/ most book to movies- I loved Memoirs- 1st listened to on books on tape- used to have to do a lot of driving, then read it and I am also afraid to see the movie. I thought that Amy Tan's books were very informative, from a social/historical/cultural perspective and very moving as well. Wish she would write more.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

I watched the movie, "The Joy Luck Club" and loved it. Thanks for the book rec. ....I'll need something to read when I'm finished with "Memoirs"

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

btw - no, she's not asking for "donations" but it's more of a fund raiser to buy a camera.

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Kristi, yep, McKinney is 30 miles north of Dallas. Congrats on finding the Dietes. Don't you just love when you get lucky like that.

Memiors of a Geisha is a great book. I have not seen the movie either, for the same reason as Ceejay. I have two Amy Tan books, but still have not read them. I used to read as many as 5 books a month before I started gardening. I have tons of books that have not been read because I am bad at going into Half Price book store for one book and walking out with 5 that were a good deal. I am one of those people who keep all read books too. Just call me a collector. ;) They now only get read in the winter or if I am going to be on a trip. I started The Bonesetter's Daughter right before we moved, but never had a chance to finish it. I just remember the main character's mom was getting dementia.

Ursula had the approval of Dave for her undertaking. I have not received the e-mail, but someone had asked about it on the "Dave's Garden" forum. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/614006/

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

sweezel, on the Bonesetter's Daughter: the butler did it.....

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Sounds like Ursula has a caring heart....I think I'll order some seeds just to support her cause (and to see if anything from Chile will grow in my yard).

Boy, I'm stinky again. Spent another lunch hour at the nursery. Bought 5 "Nearly Wild" roses and a pink blooming Datura! Hope the folks in the building can handle me until 3:00 (I get to leave early to pick the kids up from the Kids College).

Well, now that everyone has read Amy Tan EXCEPT for me.....guess where I'll be going on my lunch hour tomorrow? Hello Bookstore, here I come! (Oh my poor husband is going to kill me...hehehehehehe).

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

vossner - You gave it away! Tsk, tsk....

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Darn you Nery! Why'd you have to go and ruin it for me? I guess I can still read it and find out if the butler had any help & what he used. ;P

Oooh, I so want to spend an hour of lunch at the nursery. I have been bringing my lunch to keep from leaving though. I have been making myself stay away, because I have spent way too much money lately. Both on various things for the house and on plants that will probably just struggle in this heat and drought. Of course, that did not stop me from going by Rohde's nursery in Garland yesterday. I never get to go to because it's about 30 miles away, and I happened to be in the neighborhood. I bought 3 plants for the shade garden - 4 inch pots of Hardy Blue Plumbago & Woodland Phlox for $2.50 each. and a gallon pot of Amber Waves Heuchera - which was an outstanding deal at $6.95. They really have a wonderful selection of natives and hard to find perennials.

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Seezel sounds like some excellent choices!
Kristi I love nearly wild also Belinda's Dream and Knockout. They always look good and are not problem to take care of. I have some double purple datura http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/60033/index.html

and one that is about to bloom, appears to be yellow, Inoxia. will you save me some seeds from your pink blooming one? I will gladly save seeds or give you one of my plants, I have several of the Inoxia- although mine looks to be more cream than white http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/355/index.html

April

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks April! I will have to tell my DH that you said so if he sees the pots. LOL

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh yeah that will make all the difference, LOL! Tell me how the amber waves do, I want to plant some but I get mixed messages about how well they will do in Houston area, anyone know?

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

April....those are gorgeous....I especially like the purple (go figure). Of course I'll save you some seeds. I'd love some of that purple.

Well, I placed an order with Ursula. There are some really interesting plants on there. We'll see how it goes.

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Kristi I just now have seeds from the purple! Will set some aside.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Ohh! Another lucky day! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! The babe I bought at lunch has no blooms but you can be sure I'll save you some as soon as I can.

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

I will do that. It looks very very good in it's pot, much better than the Palace Purple they had. Of course my Palace Purple looks like crud too and I think I might just get rid of it or at least move it to deeper shade. I am sure the Amber Waves had been watered well, but it must not mind the heat. Do you have any Heuchera yet?

This message was edited Jun 26, 2006 1:48 PM

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Sweezel, I just looked up the Heuchera and I can't say I've ever seen it before. Is it a flowering plant?

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes but most of the time it's grown for foliage more than flower. It's a woodland plant, usually planted along side hostas and similar stuff. They don't always work here in Texas though.

The American native Heuchera - Heuchera Americana is supposed to be best in the south. I have actually seen them growing naturally in the Ouachita forest in Oklahoma. I am such a dork - I was excited when I saw it. Dale's Strain and Green Spice are two cultivars and both seem to be doing well. I am experimenting with other hybrids though. 'Cappuccino' is newly planted, bought through a Co-op, and is doing really well through the drought. The real test will be if it comes back next spring.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

Boy, I have struggled with trying to grow Heuchera down here! Great in Oklahoma, lousy in Houston. I have tried them in the ground, in pots, with a little sun, without sun...it doesn't matter. They all look frazzled and then they die. I think it is the combo heat and humidity..(and the pill bugs). If anyone here grows them in the Houston area, and they look good, let me know what your trick is! Please!!
CJ
Oh - alongside Hostas. Well, there's a clue. Hostas struggle down here too.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

yeah hostas and heucheras, they no like houston

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL They struggle here, but I probably not as much as there. One zone can make a big difference. Of course, even though I have seen them struggle, I can't help but buy them! I just can't resist. My 'Purple Palace' and 'Silver' something Heuchera are looking really bad. Both are big box purchases (earth to Staci - you know better). All of my Hostas, except for Blue Cadet, look pretty ragged right now too.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

By the way, I saw the orange esperanza today....it's lovely. I'll have to buy at least 2 on my next trip (Wednesday, maybe?)!

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

CeeJay, there's a bug in 'wildlife' I bet you can id. I can't grow heucheras either. They die over the winter, I think. That orange esperanza sounds pretty, where did you see them for sale?

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Houston Garden Center. It really caught my eye. Those things are SOOOOOOOOOO easy to grow and they multiply! I've given many yellow ones away to my buddies.

Are any of ya'll planning on going to the plant swap in November? Has anyone been to one before. I haven't but it sounds like fun.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

Was it 1/2 off?

I might go, I've never been to one either, where is it?

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Yup, 1/2 price, of course they pump te price up beforeit goes to 1/2.

I think it's at the Mercer Arboretum.

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

November swap is in College Station:
