Scorpions...in TX

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Almost stepped on an itty bitty scorpion in the dark kitchen. I've not seen one in the San Antonio area in the couple years I've been here! We had them moderately in Bryan/CS area but not what I've seen here. I thought they preferred sandy soils...all rock here. I guess the tremendous heat (hottest it's been in TX since 1895) brought in from the outdoors. We'll have to spray the baseboards with some pest killer again.

I don't remember ever seeing one inside when we lived in SA, but saw plenty in the hill country north of 1604. We used to camp near the Guadalupe and always were on the lookout for them and tarrantulas.

Bubba,

Thanks for the tip! Here I thought with my weeded yard treated for fireants I was safe to be barefoot. It just isn't like the north though. Had no idea they had tarrantulas down here to!

Howdy Tir_Na_Hog
Just read your post about scorpions. We seem to be over run with them here in San Antonio! I live outside of Loop 1604 near Helotes and they seem to be making their way into every nook and cranny in our new house. The heat and drought are definitely the reasons for the march. Since I tend to not use poisons or insecticides, I'd love to hear how to thwart the little guys. A neighbor even told me to try drawing a chalk line around the foundation..lol. Might try it!

Oops...make that Tir_Na_Nog..lol

TX,

No prob on the name...it's a tough one....irish folk lore story anyhow.

Don't know about the chalk line but we bought Greenlight product called BioGanic...get it from HD and it doesn't kill but detours them from crossing over it....so we spray thresholds and trim. Works on spiders and crickets to.

Only seen 1 so far but freaks me to step into a dark room and then remember TURN ON THE LIGHT so I don't step on one!!!!

I had a feeling that it was Gaelic that I was reading, Tir_Na_Nog. Lovely language, that. And being Irish myself, I always love to see it used here in the states. Right on about the scorpions. One was perched on our light switch in our hot, dark garage. My fiance almost put his hand on it! Also found one that had died trying to get thru an electrical outlet in our bedroom. It's claws were hanging out of the socket! *brrrrrr* Now THAT one gave me the willies...

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Oh my gosh!! You are kidding me!!! Through the socket!! EW!!! So these things are virtually everywhere! DOH! Well, in 2 years in SA it's the first I have seen here...we saw a TON when we lived in Bryan/CS area...but the area is sandy so they LOVE it.

I think you are right...the heat is bringing them in.

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

Well, I've had the scorpions around all the years I've lived here. I leave them alone outdoors. But if they come in my house (which a few seem to do every year), I kill them. No pesticides, just a shoe or whatever! Oh, BTW, I don't actually live in Helotes, I'm closer to the Medina Lake area. The scorpion sting is painful, but it goes away after a while.

would rubbing a cut onion on the sting ease the pain instantly as it does for bee stings?
