Texas heat

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

SBC is always having specials for their high speed stuff which is what I use (or no one could get through on the phone line...hehe). We have ours for like $18 a month but I've seen it as low as $14.99. But at least as gardeners we probably should have the best patience in the world....waiting for rain....waiting for the plants to grow...waiting waiting waiting. =)

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lol Tir_....waiting is half the fun in the land of gardens and such.. ;)

Yeah, we'll have to upgrade here soon....this drives me crazy sometimes.... :o

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

I don't have cable or satellite TV anymore (got a yard and DH says we should be in it, LOL) so DSL is my one luxury. =) I use it more than I ever watched the TV.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

Yuska, what's this vinegar of 4 thieves?

I'm lucky, my dh is a computer geek and loves all the latest technology, he had to have an hd tv, and you know, I can't tell the difference. It must be a guy thing.

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

I got to see the difference in TV images when we went shopping for one so I can vouch for your DH that HD is nicer....but I mostly watch PBS if I catch TV and it's good on any screen. =)

I would live in goodwill if I could. I love looking and finding cool stuff. I don't need anything... but I like looking anyway.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

Me too, I've got to check out the Goodwill here, in The Woodlands, we are not allowed to have garage sales, so you know all that 'stuff' has to go somewhere. That's where my stuff goes.

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

fly girl,
AWESOME! No garage sales?! That makes for one awesome Goodwill store!

I always found it takes way more of my time to set up and hold a garage sale for the money I'd make after haggling and selling that I always just take my used things to Goodwill and get a tax deduction receipt.

I just got my HOA newsletter and we are having a community wide garage sale... anyone that wants to have a garage sale can. The HOA is going to put it in the paper and advertise it. So.. now I get to start getting stuff ready!

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

That makes for a more successful sale for sure!

I'm going out garage saling myself tomorrow for baby items. I checked the resale shops in town and my gosh...they want brand new Walmart baby item prices! Might as well try the garage sales.

have you tried freecycle and/or craigslist? I'm always seeing baby stuff there.

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

Some people are unable to nap in the daytime unless they're exhausted to an extreme degree. I'm like that. So napping is not a healthy option for me. Just can't do it...haven't been able since childhood. As far as dialup, it's all that's available out here (other than satellite internet, I think) and it's a pretty slow dialup at that. Has to do with phone lines out here in the boonies. Ma Bell/AT&T doesn't want to spend the money to have adequate phone line capacity out here. Also we lose power too often and have brownouts that go on way too long because to CPS we're a very very low priority. I still remember that famous weekend we were without power from early Saturday morning until late Monday. They had to pay us for all the food we lost because it was so totally their mistake.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Well it only took me 43 attempts to reload this page . . . if I can get this msg thru . . . I was wonder'n if maybe Hilary would mind starting "Texas Heat - Part II" ??

Yeah TxT . . . get a white ball and we'll LydArt it :D

I wish I could get highspeed out here . . . but they don't offer it thru SBC/AT&T out here yet and Direct TV is nuts on their set up fees . . . I'll just have to hold out for the phone company to finally work their way out this direction (prolly take another 5 years :(( )

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I have "highspeed" and everything is taking soooo long to load tonight. It's this DG site...not your puter. I even started a new thread in the "Garden Talk" called "What is your OLDEST pot plant?" and included a picture and a story..and it said it loaded...but alas, it wasn't there. All that writing/work for nothing!

I wonder why things get slow here at times? It's strange....

Connie

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lol...Well....its now 8:25 AM...and it all loaded just fine this morning... :)
Hmm....Just takes a longer amount of time if there are alot of responses on one thread? I know we've been running this heat thread for a while now...lol GD, I think the armadillos are diggin' around your lines...lol

Nada, we had our yearly neighborhood garage sale too...I didn't get to go this year...but we had a blast walkin' from house to house just finding some goodies... I walked away with an antique vanity bench for 1.00 that my honey obligingly carried around the neighborhood...lol

lol GD...I'm tellin' ya....there's money to made on dem dar bowlin' balls... ;) I ran that idea by my mother last night on the phone....all that I heard was ---------------* lol...but I honestly like the idea...Would ya put it on a pedestal..or get it all settled on the ground....?

lol Tir_....Goodwill has infant clothing for .99.... (shameless advertiser) :)

Oh, it is the mysteries of the web, sometimes servers are not working, or the program is not working, it could be a hardware problem, or they might be working on maintenance.
In any case, sometimes it just doesn't work, and it is very frustrating.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Hmmm...perhaps GD has something there.. ;) Should we start a Texas Heat Part II? lol.... But if its a general problem....?

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

GD & TxTurquoise, I'm running SBC/AT&T's new U-Verse form of DSL (fiber-optic and in Beta) which is even speedier. Even so, this thread and a couple of others have been a tad uncooperative the last couple of days. I'm in the northwest quadrant near Marshall high school. The technician who installed it told me the phone company does plan to expand the service areas, but wants to have a green light to use the fiber optic for all new installations. The trial period I'm in runs through December - from what I've seen my hunch is the new form will probably be coming your way. Yuska

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

I have to say that it wasn't just this thread, the site was down for a while, period.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Yeah I'm with ya'll there . . . However, I was also have'n trouble on other sites too . . . so for me it's likely a combination of several factors - the bigger the page, the more trouble I have with my pokey dial up.

Maybe someday they'll offer highspeed at reasonable rates out here too? For now . . . I'll keep hit'n the refresh button and mumble'n fuzzy words under my breath . . . lol

Dallas, TX

I have SBCyahoo DSL,always wondered what the hoopla was since I left AOL. I dont think its that fast. I guess i am comparing it to the system at work. I dont have the problem of the threads downloading so I guess that is a plus.

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

well for the life of me there was one more cool thread on bowling balls.....and i cant find it....oh well

i made it thru another early morning!!!! then took a 2 hour nap...will keep trying this...wanna be a morning person....but i am tired as we speak....

txt you stayed up late and got up early.....amazing

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

JD thank you for the iced tea and I'll try to repay it by sending you some cooler weather this winter. You've got my location right (re: Canada) and oh yes we can/do get warm (trust me no fireplace needed for heating now....... just being located near the Dakotas/Montana will do it ;). And there is also our looooooooooonger summer daylight hours. Canada's record high of 117 F (back in the 30's I think) was set at a small town near my location.

Always nice to lurk in the Texas forum and pick up hot/dry weather gardening tips since my area is on a warming trend that isn't likely to change any time soon.

The pic below shows 100 +F will prolly be here tomorrow (right now the chillers have shut down at work so blue fingers don't sound too bad at all)......at least one can dress warmly in the winter but how do you cool off without AC at work???.

Sticks, thanks for the bb sites. Unreal how hot it's been everywhere. We finally got some rain......yiiiippeeee

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Has there been a new tx heat thread yet?

Didn't realize they'd considered ya'll "out in the sticks" when it comes to services like DSL, that stinks! Amazing that CPS would let you go without power so long in Helotos! I've noticed we've had the power go out at our house here in Converse already in a year and a 1/2 than in all the 5 years we've rented in various places. You'd think big city they'd have things under control?

Had a GREAT run at the garage sales this morning. The Stoneoak area is where I went. 2 out of 3 sales were good. The first one, "jackpot," the lady had a TON of newborn -3/6 mo baby girl clothes for a buck each! And she'd only had 1 girl so they were like new! DH had to hold me back...I wanted to buy all but he said there was only so many clothes a newborn would fit that long, that we need to look for the other ages as well. HA!

The other garage sales were disappointing! Things weren't priced (odd?), things just laid out on the driveway (no tables)...NOT good for a pregnant lady (HA!) or they just didn't have much! You'd wonder why they'd bothered to pay for an ad AND pay SA their fee for having a garage sale! Something they don't charge for in Michigan....I think that is not very cool.

I'd love to hit one of those neighborhood sales you have been talking about but there were no ads that mentioned "baby items" for that today. Please (!), let me know if you hear of one going on! THANK-YOU!

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

tir how far along are you.....yup i bet is not fun being pregnant in this weather either....i love garage sales...but i live 45 minutes from the big city so it is not cost effectiveish....(that is what my brain tells me)....cause i wanna buy everything....glad you found some great stuff!!!! it is so much fun to get stuff for great prices and it is really nice stuff!!!

fly...wahhhhh we got no moisture....but i did my morning duty and made it thru day 2.....he he

wish someone would start a new thread.....

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Not to bad being pregnant IN this weather but getting harder to lean over or bend over! I am just now into my 6th month and have gained 13 pounds total (was sick as a dog early on). I am planning on nursery furniture next. But I'll try to hit these garage sales (at least one promising ad) per weekend until I have more clothes for my lil' one than I have....that won't take to long!

I live in Converse so it was about 20 minutes to drive over to Stoneoak but with an ad that said LOTS of baby items....all like new I couldn't resist! I always have to reference the address on mapquest.com to make sure it's worth the drive (good area, not to far, etc).

We got some RAIN today folks! At least in Converse, for probably 20 minutes. Went to Canyon Lake this afternoon but only got 1 hour in before the dark clouds threatened. They were all talk there though...no rain.

I love this Texas Heat thread...it has to be the best in the forum so far! SO many topics!

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

Tir, it is ridiculous how expensive baby clothes can be and they wear them for such a short time.

Congrats Sticks on day 2! Go ahead and start a new thread, I'm with ya!

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

I have said the same thing many times- you can put tons of layers of clothing on and people will only comment that you like you have gained weight, but take you clothes off in the summer and the cops will be hauling you in because of some home owner's assoc violation!

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

What is with this freecycle website? I have tried like 20 user names and it keeps saying that profile name has been taken....there are only like 1,300 SA area members!?! Sheesh.....

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

We have this older gentleman that doesn't wear a shirt when he walks, I wish the HOA would step in, or at least buy him a full length mirror.

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Yeah I know what you mean- some how watching out of shape guys w/o their shirts seems just as unpleasant as seeing me gardening in the nude.

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

LOL@ full length mirror

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Come on girls, you know you like it! LOL!

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Maybe we should start a part-2. This is really gettin long.

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

Scoolie you are a devil!

Missouri City, TX(Zone 9a)

I second that! And will do it.

My DH wears the tank tops and the older he gets and the heavier he gets the worse they look. But at least he doesn't go anywhere in them. Some comedian said one time "old fat men shouldn't go with out shirts, it confuses the babies!" LOL!

Posted on top of you, sorry!......LOL!

tir....not only do i like this thread.....but i LOVE this texas area....i generally put most of my questions here....cause as someone said....you don't put anything in full sun here in texas.....everything is just so different here....and i think the people are different and kinda have a connection....for that reason i come here first....

when i first joined i would ask a question here and in the category that it pertained to ie perennials, hostas etc....WELL, i would get double or triple the answers here than the category i asked in...love it here
