I'm with you sticks, when I see something really pretty I ask myself, "How many plants would that great looking capri with the cuff and embroidery buy? I get more enjoyment from my plants than my wardrobe. I've discovered my DH's white t-shirts, they're nice and not real thin. He's not real happy about it.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

West Nile is in our area and as much of the evening cologne ( "La off") I use, I still get bit occassionally. So I went to the thrift store and bought some extra large lightweight shirts, and long cotton loose fitting pants. I add a tank top underneath and can stand to work outside a little longer on my weekend mornings and late afternoons. I always look pretty bad when I am working in the yard, but even more so in my sloppy clothes! But, they are cooler, and the skeeters don't bother me as much. My face, neck, ears and ankles are sprayed down though.
I have a theory about West Nile. I think if you have been used to being bit like me for years, you build up more of an immunity. Those people you are getting sick are older folks or people who are rarely outside and don't get bitten as often as some of us. I can just walk out to feed the fish and have only my ankles uncovered, and get 5 or 6 bites! They love me. I am hoping this heat dries up some of their breeding areas that we don't have control over. Not to the point of harming the ducks, etc that use the creeks of course.

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

fly girl...i buy t-shirts from a texas tshirt place online that has hanes her way white t's for $4.23...they look nice and neat and i have stained ones and a few clean white ones with my khakis...or jeans .....a real no brainer...so all the brains go to my garden!!!!

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

sheila...i have my mosquito uniform in layers too....so i can start peeling stuff off by the time it starts getting hot and i don't get bitten any more(hopefully)...i had to stop wearing OFF...due to the deet in it....i noticed that i was extremely fatiqued everyday.....just drug myself about the yard...day after day after day....all the while spraying myself with lots of off and cutter....WELL, one day i was out of it and i noticed myself having some energy....next day....energy...what was happening.....well i replenished my off....and started spraying me ....fatique ...major fatigue.....i finally figured out that it was the deet in the cutter or off.....come to find out a friend of mine had a worse situation than mine....he sprayed it on....and had neurological shutdown....couldnt talk...couldnt move....was paralized...come to find out he had an allergic reaction to cutter/deet.....i researched...and sure enuf, the adverse symptoms of deet were neurological shut down....it took him 6 months of detoxing his system with mega vitamins etc and finally everything returned.......; i learned my lesson big time....no more deet for me....i wear avon expedition...it is a deet free product.....scary

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

I'll check into those. The reason I like white is I can use the bleach pen on them, hate to bleach the whole shirt, it just ruins the fabric.
Sheila, I'm worried about WN too, but I just can't do the long sleeve and pants, it's too hot. I have a rosemary shrub and I take a twig of it and rub it on my arms and legs it seems to help some.
I don't what loves me more...the skeeters or the fire ants!

China Spring, TX(Zone 8a)

BTW, I do buy my DH's garden shirts at Goodwill. When I'd come home w/a new all cotton thin LS shirt, he'd complain they were too hot. So, I went to goodwill, found the thinest, lightest (in color and weight) and he loves them. So, I started buying my shirts there, too. They are soooooo soft due to the many washings. I figure if we pay outrageous amounts for "stone washed", why not buy "prewashed" anyway. I don't care if someone sends the "fashion police" to my garden. I'm in the garden and that's going to get me dirty. But, I don't have a phych bill because I find my inner peace out there. Gardening feeds our soul, builds muscle and bone, makes you the envy of your friends, and becomes a great friend whom you find serenity with. Thanks for the cudos but I just try to figure out ways to get beautiful things for my garden that I wouldn't splurge on if I had spent a fortune on my wardrobe.
hilary

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I have a Rosemary big enought to roll in, guess I need to try that! I also use the Skin so Soft, Avon prod, when I am not going to be out long.
S n S, I have stopped using the areosol spray Off. The pump bottle that they have out now doesn't have the greasy skin coating feeling. MY DH couln't use the Off can, but hasn't got a problem with the pump. It still has the Deet, but it's a lighter solution, different formula maybe.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lol @ ya'll and your gardnin' clothes....Its funny that ya mention Goodwill...since I'm part of the management team at a huge Goodwill store...lol.. I can't justify going to the mall and handing over 36.00 for a pair of jeans when I can find my gardening attire in an OLD pair of Levis for 4.99, lol. See there? Someone has gone and made them comfy for me...lol I pretty much hang out in old Levi shorts and tanks when I'm gardening in the summer...with my big old floppy cowboy hat for the shade. I also slather on the 150 spf sunblock, lol...since I'm Irish... :) I guess if I slather it on thick enough, the skeeters don't seem to like the taste...lol

I can't stand skeeter sprays! They smell awful and lay all sorts of nasty chemicals on your skin.. ;p

I pretty much spend about 95% of my time and expense on gardening myself. I don't take to watching movies too much...or nightclubbin with all of that hullabaloo...I can't imagine a more perfect and peaceful past time for me....cept painting and drawing, I reckon... :)

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

We have a cold front moving in tomorrow, the high is only going to be 95!!!!!

Ditto on the perfect pastime Tx T!

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

YES! Finally a good day for gardening. =) I'll spend more of my time out in the heat once I can build a back porch and patio....maybe in the cooler weather of a Texas winter.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

Woohoo, I hope it makes it down here. Get your sweater out Sheila lol

Guess I'll take a look at Goodwill, that's a good idea. I'm looking for an old bowling ball anyway, want to make a mosaic or something out of it for the garden.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Interesting idea....fly_girl....I hadn't thought of that... :)
We don't carry bowling balls at our stores since kids were rollin' them down the aisles and using customers as pins...lol But I'm sure that other Texas Goodwills may have 'em... :)

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

sheila...isn't that wierd...but my hubbie hates the pump avon....but will use the aerosol avon....so as soon as i am done with this pump avon it is back to aerosol to me...it seems alot less greasy than the pump....; now i am talking about the avon expedition spray....i have never used skin so soft....i need all the help i can get with keeping mosquitos off me so i stick with the heavy stuff(grin)

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

TXT....OMG @@ i would be in heaven working in a goodwill store YEHAW....am i a major juncker......i have an antique store....(he he) been open since 97....i have had it closed for the last couple of years due to ebay, gas prices etc....but it stays there on the hwy.....with everything in it....i was grieving over closing it...but a friend said, you know joni, antiques will always be here....so just close the store if you don't have to liquidate...so i did...but i would just DIE being around all that great stuff!!!!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

lol TxT . . . my "uniform" consists of a pair of old blue jean cutoffs too . . . and sneakers/sticker stoppers . . . oh and occasionally a t-shirt to haul the tomatoes and other goodies in from the veggie garden (rolled up grandma's apron style) ;)

Heya Hilary . . . I'm not sure how far China Spring is from San Antone' but if you're not too far, I may could come give your rain water cystern a paint job for ya ?

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

txt there is a great thread here on daves....trash to treasue or something and there are some gorgeously embellished bowling balls for garden art...

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Sticks, the pump we have is Off. I didn't know Avon had an aerosol...?
Re: bowling balls....my neighbor had this beauty out at the curb on bulky trash day. It isn't even drilled!! I bought mirrors etc. to put on it but that is for a winter day. LOL!

yall quit typing so fast i am having a hard time keep up reading and blabbing(grin)

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

The trick to getting up early is being in bed by 8:30 or 9:00. I'm usually start waking up at 4:30 in the morning. Mainly due to work but I do it on my days off also. I have to push myself to stay up past 9:00. In the summer I try to at least try and stay up til it gets dark. LOL!

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

sheila ...great garden art...and yes avon has a spray mosquito thing....called expedition...it also has sunscreen in it..

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

scoolie...well here i am past my bed time....he he..whats a girl to do:)

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

Wow sticks, that's neat, an antique store....I'm a major junker too. The thing about ebay is the bidding, and you can't really tell what it looks like. I think there are alot of people that still like to actually go to the shops and browse. It's just not the same on ebay.....the fun is the hunt!
You could open up an internet site with your shop stuff with no bidding.

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

I'll be calling it a nite in about 10 mins.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

GD_R,
If you don't work, and are able to, start waking up at the same time every morning. Give yourself 30 min or and hour to wake up then go walking in the garden. You will see something that needs to be done etc.; and before you know it you will have past a few hours working. If you get hot and tired, go in relax, eat breakfast then go back out. After it starts to warm up outside take that nap your body and mind wants, just don't sleep too long. Don't take late afternoon naps, go to bed early like scoolie said. Your mind and body clock will reset it's self after a few weeks and your priorities will change, especially in this heat!!!

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

you know...i am burnt out for a while...right now i am just dog paddling and gardening....hopefully one of these years i will get something to kick me in the behind and i can do something with the store again...we own the building so i don't have to do anything right now....but we are in the middle of nowhere and so sometimes you would see a person all day....and then the next you would see a dozen....so for right now i am going to enjoy my yard and work my fingers to the nub planting the flats of plants that i got...only 10 more flats to go to plant....eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Hey, try freecycle for the bowling balls!

Edited to say Goodnight too..... my brain is skipping stones!

A Cooler tomorrow everyone!! {-))

lol...My day usually starts at around 6:30 or 7:00 am...even on my days off...thats when I get most of my gardening done.....and then finish it up when dusk pulls itself in by the bootstraps.. :) The gloaming is my favorite time of the day, sort of that "inbetween time."

lol GD, I still carry okra and tomatos like that, all rolled up and unsticky in that favorite grandma style... :)

lol sticks, well.............its funny ya mention antiques too...I use to appraise antiques in Boston...and then found myself as the Auction Manager at my Goodwill store. We sort of have what you'd call a more upscale Goodwill...if you can believe it, lol. Our team is constantly setting things aside for me to have a look...and off I go to put it on auction. You wouldn't believe what people donate! Incredible antiques...lots of old Texana, etc. And its all for a wondeful cause... :)

I'm definitely going to have to keep an eye out for a bowling ball! I love that idea......Much better then a gazin ball... :)

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

sheila....i could stay in my yard for hours...but as it was this am....i was already doing more than i do on most days when i wake up at 10....so i was quite proud of myself.....PLUS, i was able to have coffee with hubbie...that was priceless too....so there are more pluses than negs....gotta keep it up.....going to bed now.....great talking to you!!!

night all!!!!

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

If that's online, I would pay a fortune for shipping, but I'll look. Love that red one, it looks pretty on the pedestal.

I used to like to sleep in, bur age has a way of changing things, at least for me, now I can't hardly sleep past daybreak.

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

txt i will see if i can find the thread on bb....they were gorgeous....will look tommorrow...night...:)

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

fly girl...i am 51...and have been a night owl my whole life...would like to be a morning person!!1

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

I think it's incredible how many Goodwill stores are in SA! TxT: which locations really are the best here?

I'm not a morning person by choice either but I can force myself for work. If I had my way I'd be up til about 10 or 11 and sleep until about 8.

Love the garden art you guys!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

lol Sheila . . . ya I think it's nap time for ya . . . that wasn't me that was need'n advice on stay'n up and stuff . . . lol But hey it's been a long day here to, so no probs ;) Not to mention this thread has been a whirlwind to keep up with tonignt . . . especially for us 'dial up users' :p

Oh and TxT . . . keep your peepers off'a muh bowl'n ball :))

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Re skeeter sprays...I made up a batch of the Vinegar of 4 Thieves recipe that Darius posted. Works great!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lol....it HAS been a slow night for the ole dial-up...hasn't it? Daaang, this page takes forever to reload after a new response...or is it just me?

lol @ the bowlin' ball.....well....ya know, that might be an interesting idea .....I'd start out with a painted white one...and put some detail on it...hmmmmm*
