This was tasty wasn't it!
Variegated Shantung Maple (Acer truncatum 'Akikaze Nishiki')
Do you have a better photo of it than me?

Here's another photo of the leaves on another branch-

I know this next one is a Japanese Maple but the tag said Acer mono and that just isn't matching up-

Here's another pic-

I loved them both but I want one of those Shantung Maples for myself.

Chatham, IL(Zone 5b)

Not sure if they're better per se, but here's a couple more pics for ya, I think thats your melon in the bottom right of the pic too.
(Eq was busy re-labling the plants at the garden.)

Shantung Maple first..

Here's me pic of the (simplified name..) Varigated green/yellow maple tree.
Once again, you can see EQ removing the tags and replacing them with her own. (just kidding) (or am I?)
Have a look for yourself.

I never did get an ID on the next tree, and like most of the trees there, there was no tag....
Looks like the devil tree of unspeakable fame... but grows bigger and doesn't seem to be dangerous.

That was the tag I tried to read and it fell off the tree in my hand. I tried to put it back on the tree. Why, I don't know but I figured maybe it was worth something to somebody. Success, I got it back on the tree. I spent some time researching that plant and I know what it is- Japanese Maple (Acer pictum 'Hoshi Yadori'). Look it up and tell me if that isn't a hit! I don't want one but I sure do like it. Now, I do want a Shantung Maple. That thing was way cool.

I missed the tree you photographed last.

The tree in the pic is Acer mono or a close relative (A. cappadocicum, A. truncatum, etc), not A. palmatum.

It also looks badly diseased, with something damaging its photosynthetic capability. I'd get rid of it, and replant something healthier ;-)

Resin

But but but.... I found dead matches to this tree when I located 'Hoshi Yadori'.

Good news, it isn't my tree. It was planted at the Rotary Gardens that we all visited together. I had the leaves in my hand and I looked at their undersides. I also checked out the trunk. All in all I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. Why exactly do you feel it looks badly diseases? Very curious.

Elburn, IL(Zone 5a)

(he was joking--Resin is anti-variegation and cultivari-i-ation)

Ahhh, I feel much better. Thought I was missing something as the little tree appeared to be the epitome of health to me.

Bad resin! Bad bad bad!

Illinois, IL(Zone 5b)

Mike, that last one doesn't look much like a Devil-tree (Acer diabolicum) or even a devil's club (Oplopanax horridus) or Devil's walkingstick (Aralia spp.) -- it looks like a sweet, beautiful, harmless Albizia, the tree of the Angels!!!

D-Mail me sometime do we can secretly compare notes about Equil . . .

Not at all! That's a Metasequoia!

No problem - that's a cultivar of A. mono (syn. A. pictum) - just put 'Hoshi Yadori' in google, and you'll get lots of hits

Resin

Eau Claire, WI

I'm sensing Resin is having fun with this one.

Harumph! Men! Maackia, that now includes you too!

This is what I found when I searched for images of Acer mono-
http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images?p=acer+mono&sm=Yahoo%21+Search&fr=FP-tab-img-t&toggle=1&cop=&ei=UTF-8

Didn't realize pictum was a synonym of mono. Oh well, I did get it nailed. It is 'Hoshi Yadori'. Sooooooooooooo resin.... why didn't you save me a few hours surfing the net typing my poor little weery fingers to the bone and put me out of my misery by telling me it was 'Hoshi Yadori'? Twenty whips with a wet noodle to you!

Guy AND Mike both have to know that's a Metasequoia. They're both just trying to get a rise out of me for the sake of readership. Not going to bite, uh uh no way. The tag I was trying to get back on the tree was to the Acer mono thing or whatever you want to call it. I felt bad that it literally fell off the tree when I went to look at it to see what it was. I want one. It's beeee uuuuuu teeeeeee ful!

Now who has a Shantung Maple that I can gift wrap and send to resin in the form of a wreath since I understand he likes variegated plants so well.

Illinois, IL(Zone 5b)

I have one, but it's one he'd like. The straight species, not one of those awful variegated things!

And no, you can't have it.

And yes, you are sooooo fun to tease! Hee-hee-hee!

Guy S.

I want the variegated one. Yours simply won't do.

I didn't know the cultivar name until you mentioned it! Just recognised the species that your plant belonged to. Then when you mentioned the cv name, I googled it to see what would come up as belonging to, and the answer was Acer mono ;-)

Your penance: to live with a tree with 'orrible yellow blotches on the leaves for the next 40 years . . .

Resin

Bureau County, IL(Zone 5a)

Equil, I was thinking of the perfect wreath for Resin. It'll have parts of all the guys here in this thread. It will be so much fun to make! Are ya in???

Ha, wrong tree resin dear. I lust for the Shantung. Therefor, my pennance will be to live with a tree that has 'orrible white blotches on the leaves for the next 40 years. Although I like the one that has the 'orrible yellow blotches on the leaves and I wouldn't mind having one... I don't want it bad enough to find a place to stick it. Now that Shantung, that I will make space for. Right by a small pond by my front door.

Naa, Terry. Resin's off the hook. He didnt know which cultivar it was.

Rock Island, IL(Zone 5b)

Heck I thought it was a liriodendron...(the yellow thing tree)!

I don't believe any of you guys!

Dax

Well, the flowers on liriodendron are yellow. Works for me.

Bureau County, IL(Zone 5a)

No no Equil, it's a wreath we make for Resin. He's certainly off the hook. We'll make it with parts of the other guys. It'll be so much fun! My mom gave me a hot glue gun years ago and I've never used the dern thing. It'll come in handy.

Ohhhhhhhh, careful with those hot glue guns. They hurt big time if you get any on yourself. I don't know if you are aware of this but they have low temp glue guns now. Those aren't so bad.

Bureau County, IL(Zone 5a)

Equil, is there something flying over your head right now?? Flap flap flap.........

Uh oh, did I miss something?

Bureau County, IL(Zone 5a)

I'll send you a dmail..........

Illinois, IL(Zone 5b)

What the heck are you two ditzes talking about?

Guy S.

Something flew over my head but I caught it now.

Bureau County, IL(Zone 5a)

Did you get it finally?? Thank goodness. I tought maybe I needed to draw a picture...lol....

Ahhh, you're an arteeste too ;)

Bureau County, IL(Zone 5a)

Girl, I have so many talents, it sometimes amazes me just how talented I am :o)

Girl, I am just beginning to learn how untalented I am. I tired to create a painted decorative pot for a friend and let me tell you, I thought my eyeballs were going to fall out of my head from the strain of the little brush strokes. Oh oh oh! I explode ticks well with a long barbecue lighter. There is an actual "art" to exploding ticks. I'll teach you this weekend!

Bureau County, IL(Zone 5a)

Directions? Address?

Ya know, speaking of ticks.....I haven't had a single one yet this year. With all the time I've spent in the timber, you'd think I'd have at least one. I'll wear my bracelet I made so you can see how purty it is! I can't wait to add exploding ticks to my long list of talents!

Illinois, IL(Zone 5b)

jeeeez. First you're making wreathes out of body parts and something (?) is flying over you and dumping on you, and now you two ditzy females are exploding ticks with fire? For some real fun, try exploding them when they have their mouths already stuck into your scalp! There's probably nothing up there to be damaged anyway!

Guy S.

Oh Terry, we've got lots of ticks around here. I've been pulling them off left and right. I'm sure one of us will find one crawling around and I'll be able to teach you the fine art of exploding ticks. For an encore, Guy will show both of us how to explode one that is attached to one's head. I've never tried that before and am thinking I need to see first hand exactly how it is done.

Direstions and address, I'll call you tomorrow! Get your pen ready!
