Coffee and.........May 30, Tuesday
Hi folks,
I want to send a special hello to Molly, as it seems that I somehow forget to say hi --- perhaps because you tend to post at the beginning of the thread (since you've been posting the link, anyway) and by the time I usually post, the morning seems too far away to remember. Just wanted you to know that I do read your posts and have been following your adventures and building projects with great admiration. Oh yes, also meant to wish a belated birthday to Jeremy!
Hi to all the new people. Drop by as often as you like. This is a really friendly bunch no matter where we all hail from.
On the subject of friendly or unfriendly areas: I think that people in New England generally are a bit more reserved than in some other areas of the country. I tend to be somewhat that way myself (though apparently not as much as the British, according to my British husband. He once told me that they have to live closer together there and that "if we 'let it all hang out' like you Americans, we'd be killing each other.")
Sarv, whatever got into you on that vacation? Sounds like you were going non-stop today!
I01, petting a frog? LOL At least it wasn't a snake!
Hi d'cat, I still just love how you tell us that you've been having a lazy day and then go on to mention doing as much as I might hope to get accomplished in three.
Hi bal, I meant to ask you yesterday how you go about moving a plant with a 2" diameter root, but it seems you've answered that today by saying that you can't. I feel bad about that plant that's been there so long, but still do love the gateway that you built. Too bad you can't have both.
Darius, did I miss something? Did you pick up that bug that your sister had after all? Hope that whatever it is, you get over it really quickly.
Lauri, also hope your back mends itself in record time! It sounds pretty nasty to me. Hope you're getting a lot of TLC from your family at least.
Hi M5, hope the thunderstorms clear out soon and it's clear sailing for a couple of days at least. I can really relate to that "safe place" problem. I do it to myself constantly, it seems. I was going crazy hunting for something just a couple of days ago --- and of course now I can't even remember what the heck I was looking for.
Hi oz, Maria, V-ann, kooger, and hope.
Welcome back, Mary. Sounds like your ride went fairly well, but hope that the horse recovers quickly. I'm the one who has adopted a kitten that someone threw in the trash (literally) I did post a picture, but here's another featuring our Dumpster Diva and my DH.
Hi I01,
I think about 1/3 to 1/2 of the cuttings that I tried to root have survived. I'll pass along the advice that I got over on the herb forum: use the tips of the branches where the stem is still flexible, not woody. Strip off the lower leaves and If you have rooting hormone, use that; if not, dip the stems in cinnamon to discourage mold. Fill starter tray or small plant containers with potting soil, poke a hole with a pencil and insert stem. Firm soil around stems and arrange some sort of covering that will admit light, but hold in some moisture. (I used one of the "mini-greenhouse seed starter trays with the clear cover, but some people have managed with plastic bags held away from the plants with sticks, etc.) Mist soil to keep it moist, but avoid misting the plants themselves. Keep out of direct sunlight at least to start with. They do take quite awhile, but eventually some will just dry up and die and some will start producing new leaves.
Why do you need to "butcher" your poor rosemary plant anyway? Also meant to suggest that you might want to get one of those "strawberry pots" if you want to try growing strawberries. So far mine looks quite good this year. Last time I tried it they all got moldy before producing much in the way of berries. As it turns out, there was only one drainage hole in the pot and I don't think that that was anywhere near sufficient. DH drilled some holes in the bottom and hopefully it will work much better this time!
Lovely Robert!
My, My! I stopped in earlier today and scanned through and just had to get back out to finish some work.
We've been working on the orchid house today. We took the last 2 days off to rest a bit. We made some progress. We are hoping to complete it by 6/17 for the roundup.
Although we will probably finish this project, there are one or two other things that might get put off a while longer. Ah well, there is always the rest of our lives, right?
It's late and I'm sleepy, but there is a noise outside my window. Maybe yall can help. I am sure it's either an insect or a reptile (frog?) It sounds like the power steering belt on a car that got wet in a very deep puddle. You know, the belt scream? Any ideas of this critter?

Meezer, nope, DD doesn't move in until the 14th of June. I cant wait to get her stuff out of my livingroom. I feel like a storage shed, which is not a good feeling for someone with OCD.
Sgtdot, around here you are lucky if you know what your neighbors look like, asking them to have gerenal curtesy is going a bit far. It is on the list of why we are moving. Now with that out of the way. HI, and welcome to Coffee and......... We are a talkative group and quite friendly although I have read that some have a mean streak. Dont know who they are though.
Kooger, I am keeping my fingers crossed that your surgery planning goes as you plan. Mine never do.
Lauri, catch the case of Aleve I just tossed to ya. Please be careful and heal quickly.
Oz, mean???? You???? Nah, I dont believe it...
Mary, you definately had your share of each weather type. Glad you enjoyed yourself though.
Elaine, I would have had quite the scream to go with the heart rate.
Well it has taken me over an hour to get this done with all the interuptions from the kids. Now the DH is starting his whining too. I hope to be back soon, if not good night. To all that have posted since I started ~~~~~'s to you and everyone else.
Well, this is my last check in for today, it is still the 30th.
Mary glad to hear the ride went relatively well. Hope Patch recovers in record time. DH went to check on Rusty and Midnight tonight, they have been in a back pasture, and found Midnight lame. Brought him into the barn, trimmed his feet, and found that he had a foreign object in his left front foot. Is not "doctoring" it, and hope that he recovers quickly. Here in Ky, where the spring grass is really lush, they founder quickly, so hope that has not happened to him, and the foreign object is his only problem.
McCool, and I01, since I am a newbie at herbs, the rosemary starting is intimidating me. Do you mean that the little things I have growing in pots will become monsters that will need trimming and restarting? I thought herbs for the most part were pretty carefree.
M5, what kind of garden renovation are you doing? I have a project that will begin when I come back from vacation. We put down broken brick as a visual enhancement 2 years ago, and have been plagued with weeds growing through them. When vacation is over, I plan on removing the brick, putting down black plastic, and then putting the brick back. It is tedious work trying to pull weeds in that area.
I01, so your heart rate went up a notch or two. While weeding this morning, saw some movement, and quietly pulled my hand back, as I didn't know what I had seen. It was a frog the size of a small rat! Since I knew he was there, we got along famously. It is those sudden movements that I can't identify immediately that get my heart rate up. I think you would enjoy a strawberry pot. At least you would have some berries to "snack" on. So tell me what did DH grill tonight? Something yummy I bet. We had steak on the grill, baked potato, and instead of a salad, our first "mess" of peas. Really good.
Sarv, what was wrong with the buritos?I usually like them, no matter how bad they are. So an update of the broken dishes, are they still there or tell me who cleaned them up?:
Bal, with the new plantings, things are really looking good. I just wish I was close enough that I could come by and experience it in person.
Darius, sounds like packing will be a lot of fun!! Choosing what can go now, and what goes later. Why are you not feeling so well? Hope it isn't the bug DS had.
Well, had supper ready about 5:30, and DH comes in and asks if I had heard the weather. He had some hay baled this afternoon, and they were predicting "pop up thunder showers". He didn't want to risk getting the hay wet, so off we go to load the hay and put it in the barn. Good thing we did. While we were eating, a thunderstorm passed through and gave us a torrential down pour with about 1/2 falling in minutes. A neighbor came by and claimed her tomato plants that DH had given her. She is such a ditz. This is the mother of DGD's best friend here. She is a hypocondriac ?? and she uses any lull in the conversation to tell about her newest ailment. I get tired just knowing that I am going to have to converse with her!! Anyone need tomato plants, we have already set out all that we were planning to, and still have many left. These are nice plants, and I could pack and ship them overnight. Just hate to see them go to waste.
Had a very nice conversation with Maria late this afternoon. While we were talking Samson was growling and wanting his attention. I recounted a story about my first Jack Russell, Missy a female who was so jealous of any attention to anyone besides herself, that would make me stand in a chair to have a telephone conversation. At that time, I had a wall phone in the kitchen, and when I was having a conversation, she would start nipping at my feet. So I kept a chair handy, and would just hop on the chair to save my feet, but couldn't do anything to stop her whining and growling.
Well, folks it is past midnight, and time to get this bod in bed. Tomorrow is grocery shopping/errand day, and I must make sure that the body is rested and the stamina strong, as this is my worst chore of the week. If someone would come do my shopping, I will exchange cleaning any day!!
Well, hope all of you have a restful night.
Meet us over here in the morning: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/609032/
Nite Gracie!
Molly, don't mean to slight you. Since you are the "thread starter" seems like I take you for granted. Don't mean to, but you start the thread, and go on with your day, and neary a thank you in sight. I will volunteer for the July thread starter position, but will need instruction, cause I have no CLUE!! But with assistance, I know that I can do this.
Carat, thanks for the advice on the pool. That is why I decided on the above ground pool. When DGD is no longer interested in visiting her Grandmother and Grandfather, in lieu of boy watching, etc. We can have it dismantled and maybe be lucky enough to sell it. In years past, we have had an inflatable pool, for DGD. Was lucky enough to sell it for almost what I gave for it. It was a "deluxe" model, and in almost new condition. I envision hoards of "friends" that will start to visit this summer!! Already am planning on improvements for the deck, and surrounding areas. I will have to move a bunch of plants, when the installers get here. Will use them to "landscape" around the pool, as it will have to be back filled, and an area created for another planting opportunity. Since you are west coast, what do you do when us east coast people sign off for bed? Have a life?
Well, that's all for me today. Just got to get to bed, as my eyes are refusing to stay open any longer.
Night Gracie, John Boy and whoever.
Bonnie,
I wasn't feeling slighted at all. I rarely address anyone individually. I will claim memory lapse, or inability to carry a thought farther than I can throw it.
Thanks for volunteering for July. IO1 has volunteered for June so we are set for 2 months now.
See ya in todays daily.
Molly
