New Subdivision...cry of the birds....

Franklin, WI(Zone 5a)

A subdivision is being planned behind my house. They (the developers) have already destroyed the natural marsh area where the redwing blackbirds nest by uprooting the cattails and removing what few trees were there.

Today they are taking down the trees in the woods and I can easily hear the cry of the mama and papa birds as they lose their nests and babies. It really is sad and my heart is broken.

What can I do to help these poor birds? I have an acre with a number of trees. Would it help to add more birdhouses, food, etc? Or will the birds that are being displaced leave the area because of the bird competition already here? I can hardly bear to be outside and hear all this going on. I am hearing birdcalls that I have never heard before. Obviously, the birds are very distressed.

If anyone had any common sense they could wait till fall to start the development, so the birds will have been done nesting. It makes me ill. What can I do to help?

Thanks for listening,

Sandy,
That is sad. It's a pretty good guess that they will name the streets after what was there before they dozed it under.

Do you have a local "Save the Marshland" type organization, or other environmental agency, that you could contact with your concerns? I've heard of some cases where organizations like that can get an injunction to temporarily halt a project due to similar concerns. Might be worth a try. Are ALL the trees gone already?

Sandy,

By all means: DO WHAT YOU CAN, put up more houses for them and provide food and water bath! The poor dears! You had a good idea there to wait until fall for nesting to be over. Good luck!

Checking with the DNR , Audubon Society and the Humane Society (for local wildlife/bird rehabers) would be my first thoughts. Maybe getting some neighbors involved..to get some time for the birds to fledge out...
Good luck...
