DG Seminar 1: Assessing Your Site

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Ah your learning PGZ5 clay is great! Just add about 5 to 10 parts compost and pine needles hopefully you have it cooking. My pile is cooking so good already it is down to 1/2 the height it started. Time to add the 2nd to the first so September is ready to spread to old beds to get them smmmmmmmmokin!

Well I still have a lot more to learn. We need to fix the drainage in front of the house where I just re-worked the front garden. Since it's a hot, western exposure I used drought tolerant plants. The thing is, when it rains, the water drains right into the bed, washing out the mulch and over-watering the dianthus and sedum (the sweetspire loves it!) So we put one of those flexible hose things on the end of the downspout, to direct the water into the driveway. Which is asphalt, so it doesn't absorb the water, it just slows it down as it drains into the edge of the bed! Ack!!

I have directed all my down spouts into perforated 4" pipe that is capped on the ends and it runs to beds where it disperses the run off to the needed beds. I also use these pathways to run irrigation under the beds to hide the hoses. You are becoming an expert in soils and plant needs.

Hi all :) I'm not closing this discussion off, but we are going to go ahead and start a second thread centering around the topic of developing a master plan. Here's the link: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/612810/

Thanks, everyone!
