You could always use those logs for seats. My neighbor has a couple that I think I've come to envy. It's much easier than unfolding the lawn chair and it's always there and ready.
Dallas Plant Swap - Working out our date and place.
Note Date and Time Added to the Top - we gear up starting in about 4 weeks so get ready!
Me and Josephine are going to be hosting again this year, but I would love to find someone who would like to make the name badges and someone to be over working out the details of the food and eating. If you are interested just let me or Josephine know - we could sure use the help!
On your mark get set, get those cuttings started!
Personally I think everyone ought to just be responsible for their own name badge, not make that someone else's job. We could make one at home or have tags there as usual and just write your name on it. Works for me.
Just an idea we got from the big RU at College Station - we hope from what we are hearing that there will be several new members there so they will need to know whop we are, if not for them I would not think twice about not even having name tags the rest of us know each other more less.
I have extras of the name tags from College Station. Want me to mail them to you, Mitch?
Mitch, I just read your message about needing cheap mulch. When I was in that position last year, I looked in the phone book and called Asplundh - the company that does a lot of tree work. They delivered a huge load to me within a week of my call. I never dreamed that they would be here in Mansfield, but there were. Suggest you try it anyway.
Marylyn - send them to Josephine if you could - living without a two year old really really helps! Thank you!!
Posie - I will check them out thank you!
Done. Josephine, if there are any left, bring them to College Station in November. :-)
Will do Marylyn, thank you very much.
I really hope to be at that one this time... leaving it in the hands of the only one who can control it.
We hope you will too Mitch, you were missed!
I will be happy to take names, ID tags, whatever is needed. Are we going to try for the door prizes there too?
I do really want to have door prizes - can you tell me how it worked at the big RU?
Each person brings an item or plant and then you raffle it off in some way.
Maybe take an item and then pull a name out of the hat, that way it is all chance.
At College Station that pulled the name first, and then the person chose what they wanted, but I think that is not as fair as taking an item and then pulling the name.
Anyway, whichever wil be fine with me, but I think the door prizes are a lot of fun.
Josephine.
I think Josephine is right, the item selected or numbered, then draw the name. The list was made with the sign up sheet when people got their name tag. They just cut those in strips I believe. We can do that.
I am sure we all have an item or plant to offer up in the name of fun.
Sounds great - and really easy too! Alright so lets get looking and we will add this to our threads when we get them all started. Love the idea if you all do!
Mitch
We do, I still have the beautiful and unique plant stand that you made Sheila.
I just know I can get a few things together here too... maybe we can have a nice prize.... let me work on that one.
Now this sounds like fun!
Sorry Josephine LOL....that one was a late night piece! It got a bit tall! I have one of your Garden books out and look at it often; learn a little each time I pick it up.
Isin't it nice to have good memories of our get togethers?
Like the thread where MarilynTX was saying where she owed credit for the yard of the month sign to all the DG friends. LOL!
I know I owe everyone on here for everything growing...
I tried it my first year on my own and nothing lived - nothing. After here I have really found what does grow what does not grow and where to find things here. Everything looks so green... - and the weeds are on their way out.
I can definately aknowledge that DG and the friends I have swapped with have added a whole lot to my gardening enjoyment. I have just about put in my last bed, so my hubby says. He has had to do so much more in the yard this year. But now I have a lot of cleared room for more plants!
Ohhh I got lot of gifts for the name pulling. I also got another batch of the Vitex going. Would you believe I found one that made it from that previous batch, it really tiny but I can see two little tiny on each side. I will probaly keep it for myself. lol I hope my medium work out because its all one third parts, I could not remember which one was two parts ... only thing I had left was some perlite. Also I got some Lorapetulum (Fringe Flower) going. I really hope it makes it. its such a beautiful plant. (see pic) I am working on some other stuff to pot up too.
Count me in for the swap!
Sorry to take so long to respond. I had a great time last year. Some of those tender babies are thriving in the garden right now.
I have one question: What sort of plants do folks like to receive at an autumn swap?
cynthia
Cynthia, Mitch can add you to the list to keep updated on any new threads, just D-mail him.
As we get closer people will list what they are bringing or want. Then the fun and excitement starts. You might check the last year's swap talk, I will see if I can find the link. I didn't have many garden plants to share last year, so I had brought pond plants. Others had started rooting or seeds early so they had loads of small plants to share.
Here you go.... this was Oct 2005 swap list.

I hope I'm not jumping the gun. But can those who are ready go ahead and list things now? Reason I'm asking is that I have a lot of things I know I can propagate, but I feel like they are all the ordinary things that everyone has around here. Then I have some other things that I can *try*, if someone will tell me the best way to propagate them. But before I do all of that, I'd like to know if anyone even wants any of these.
Here's what I have already started.
misc houseplant cuttings (philo, swedish ivy, pothos, couple of begonias)
ruellia 'Katie's Blue' (have a gazillion and am now reduced to using them instead of liriope!)
old-fashioned pink coneflowers
pink Texas skullcap
golden carpet sedum
red stonecrop 'Dragon's Blood'
tall blue ordinary ruellia
tall light pink ruellia 'Chi-chi'
creeping jenny (yellow in part sun, green in shade)
speedwell 'Georgia Blue'
Then there's some kind of little plant I got at Wal-Mart that was labelled tiarella. The little flowers look like foamflowers, but otherwise it doesn't look like any other tiarella I've ever seen. Very low-growing, groundcover-type thingy, woody stem, rounded leaves with red veins, little pink/white flowers all summer. Needs shade. Lots of seedlings but otherwise not invasive.
seeds/bulbs:
lots of coreopsis: Moonbeam, Early Sunrise (these didn't do well so I only have a few), Limerock Ruby, Heaven's Gate, and hopefully Autumn Blush (coming in a coop)
Texas columbine (yellow)
Colorado Blue columbine
pink unnamed columbine
pink cosmos
dwarf delft-blue delphinium
tradescantia (dark violet blue; named but I can't think what it is at the moment)
cypress vine
coral Gerbera daisy (no idea if these seeds will germinate or come true)
water plant: lemon bacopa (aka water hyssop; little blue flowers)--I love this, but it's taking over my tiny pond, so somebody please take some!
annual cuttings to overwinter in water:
coleus: red-burgundy with green edges
black with purple, chartreuse, and cream
chartreuse with cream edges
pale yellowish-tangerine impatiens that was labeled 'exotic impatiens' but the only exotic thing I see is the color :)
Here are some of the things I can *try* if anyone is interested and can tell me how to propagate them. If it's division, a lot of these are new this year or last year, so they aren't ready yet. :(
Misc salvias: May Night, Mystic Spires, Black & Blue, cherry sundae salvia gregii, hot pink salvia gregii
cerise-colored yarrow (I'd love to know how to propagate this)
Heucheras: smoky rose, firecracker
Heucheras coming in coop that may or may not be big enough by Oct: can-can, Cathedral Windows, Amber Waves
Blue scabiosa (can divide these if needed)
citronella plant
various hostas that are not ready to be divided but if anyone knows how to take cuttings...
Lady-in-Red hydrangea
Turk's Cap
toad lilies: tricyrtis hirta, raspberry mousse, amethystina, mizyaki (Hmm. These will be blooming in Oct; they'd do better divided for a spring round-up)
shrub daisies (yellow)
nepeta (blue flowers; don't know the name)
veronica 'Sunny Border Blue'
pink unnamed monarda
unnamed cherry pink oleander
blue scutullaria (giant blue skullcap)
red ruellia 'Ragin' Cajun' (so far, no luck propagating this one)
I love to get any new plants! But here are some of the things I'm looking for. Right now I have four shade beds to fill, and only one tiny little sun bed.
Daturas & brugs
Lenten roses (need a lot of these)
cross vine
blue corydalis that can take our heat--or something similar; open to suggestions
Sweet Autumn clematis (or any mostly-shade clematis)
coral honeysuckle
monarda 'Jacob Kline' (love the pink; want the red ;) )
red spider lilies
winter creeper starts
lotus
Texas Star red hibiscus
Wow! that is quite a list, I am overwhelmed, but I could use rooted cuttings of the
Pink and the blue Skullcap.
I have Datura wrightii, and Texas Star hibiscus seed.
Josephine.
PBTXLADY you got so much on your list I would love to have ... and you are in Garland too? I just might come to visit! lol
Limerock Ruby, Is this a perrenial for you? I purchased it when it first came out, gorgeous plant, but did not return. Some lady in Garland wrote me about that plant. was that you? I was in MSN Garden gang then.:) (pic attached)
Anyway I will just list what I like if thats all you want to know. :)
golden carpet sedum
red stonecrop 'Dragon's Blood'
creeping jenny
Speedwell 'Georgia Blue'
May Night
Heucheras: firecracker
toad lilies
Nepeta
...just to name a few ;)
Sylvia
I would love some of each of the savlias and the shullscap I have brugs - not named that I coudl bring you cuttings from - they root fast.
Hi everyone, I was wondering if there will be any rose growers at the swap. I have a few different varieties that I've rooted that I can list. I will also be looking for cuttings of roses I don't have and perennials as well.
There is always roses there and loads of Prennials - so even if you do not find them here asking there are nonDG people who come too and I am sure you will find a trade there.
Josephine, I have successfully rooted the pink skullcap in water, so I know I can manage that. Do you think the blue would work in water too? That seems to be what I'm best at. The blue skullcap is a new plant for me and I don't know much about it yet. Guess I could just try--there's time to try something else if it doesn't work.
Sylvia, I can bring you handfuls of the yellow sedum. The Dragon's Blood doesn't grow as fast--LOL, nothing grows as fast! But I should still be able to get some good starts by October. Same with the creeping jenny and Georgia Blue. And I know you like sedums--my dad has a lot of different kinds; I'll see what I can get from him. All the other stuff you mentioned... I'll be glad to try those if I can, but they may be iffy if division is required.
The limerock ruby... no, I'm not the one who wrote you about them, but I did hound Calloway's until they got them for me. :) They are also new for me this year. Very pretty, and growing like crazy, but I don't know if they'll come back. I like it enough to buy it as an annual if it doesn't. But I'm collecting seeds to try too.
Mitch, same for the salvias--don't know the best way to root them, but I'll try to find out. I'd love to try your brugs and Josephine's daturas.
Oh, yeah. I made a mistake in my want list--put winter creeper when I meant to say Partridgeberry. Anyone tried that as a shade groundcover? Don't know if I've ever even seen it in person, but it sounds beautiful.
Really--do people bring roses? How cool!
Heh. I guess I should've introduced myself. My name is Pattie. I'm in my second year on DG. Mostly lurk here because I always get too sidetracked by the gorgeous pictures to post. Didn't get to go to the roundup last fall because... drag... it was the same weekend as the Austin City Limits festival. Glad we're doing October this year instead.
Austin City Limits! My kind of girl! been dying to ge there since I've been in Texas. Pattie I got my Limerock Ruby from Calloways too. When it first hit it was supposed to be a perrenial, being a Coreopsis you would think it would return. But you are right, it is pretty enough to buy as an annual ... and it blooms all season when you cut it back. I just never seen it around to buy again. I dont go to Callaways because I dont work in that area anymore. I cant wait to meet you at the RU. :)
Sylvia
Mitch--Did you get the seeds I sent you of TX Star?
Debbie
Debbie - did I not tell you thank you when it got here? I am so sorry it got here on Thursday! I wrote it on my todo list and I had crossed it off... so sorry they are here and they are stunning.
Debbie! Where have you been?
I'm on vacation with my laptop Sylvia--its wireless; sometimes it'll pick up an unsecured source, sometimes it won't. Kinda like, can you hear me now?
Where are you? Can you say where you are? lol
Sylvia.....Debbie is in a "undisclosed secure location".
;;;;;; Oh, no that was the vice pres......LOL!! ;-))
I saw where she posted on another thread that she is in New Braunsfels, and will be until Aug. Isn't that cool? I would be floating on the river for sure in this heat. Hope you are enjoying your time off Debbie! Any pictures to share yet?
