gotcha! :)
Dallas Plant Swap - Working out our date and place.
Quick topic change ...
... anyone know where I can get decent soil that won't charge an arm and a leg? I am in Frisco (North Dallas) and am levelling a grade.
Thanks
W J
dmj, I have David phlox, but don't know how to root it. Advice anyone?
I rooted some of the John Fannick with rooting hormone into wet potting soil. So far, so good...
Yippee!! I just looked up my flowers and about 90% can be propagated from stem cuttings!! I'll be able to bring a BUNCH of fun flowers. I'm very excited about my first swap. I have no idea where I'll put what I'll come home with but I know I'll find a place...I'm a little afraid actually. My first year gardening and I'm totally hooked. And I know I will have no self-control. Maybe I should rent a U-Haul??? =)
That is great, I am glad to see you so excited and am looking forward to meeting you.
Josephine.
Does everyone wear nametags with their DG "handle"?
Yes, we usually provide them at the swap, and we all bring some food to share, something easy.
As we get closer we will start listing what plants we have to offer, and which plants we are looking for, as well as organize the food and maps for location.
Josephine.
Okay, that sounds great! Two questions:
1) How soon should I start cuttings?
2) What's the most convenient way to label them and how detailed should I get (besides common and real names...water/sun needs, etc)?
I would say, start those cuttings as soon as possible, you never know if they will all take and might have to redo.
With the labels common and scientific name is plenty, but if you want to provide more imformation that would be great, just don't wear yourself out.
I use old venetian blinds, in five inch lenghts, and write on them with a #2 soft lead pencil. The pencil will not wash off or fade, and it works great, it can be a mechanical pencil as long as it has the thicker lead.
What a creative idea, thanks!
sublimaze1, try Plano Pure. It's available both as bulk & bagged. It's from the City of Plano (one of the locations is in Melissa & the other in Plano on Custer, just off SH121). My parents bought some & have been pretty pleased with it.
http://egov.plano.gov/pureproducts/
I use Plano Pure but I don't think it is considered bargain priced. :-)
So quick question on Plano Pure - does the bulk price inclued bring it here or is there another charge for that?
Trunnels - is there a cheaper place to buy mulch? would love to know... compost is slow and there will not be what I need to finsh out some beds so thoguht this might eb a cheap way to do it...
They charge, I think, about $50 to deliver a load here in McKinney. I am not sure if they'd deliver that far south. You might check with Living Earth Technologies. They have a location in Lancaster. http://www.livingearth.net/products/products_groundcover.html?type_id=12
Sweezel is right about them not delivering that far. And I second the suggestion of Living Earth Technologies. I have bought from them before (we have one in Plano and there is also one in Irving). Prices are pretty good and the mulch is clean.
Sounds good I will give them a call and see...
What can I expect for prices? Any heads up to what is good and what is too much... I have never bought any mulch this way before...
Mitch--make sure you get hardwood mulch--its best for breaking down into good soil.
Mulch or Compost?
Here are the prices for Plano Pure. http://216.239.51.104/search?q=cache:ApS9cWJay7IJ:www.planopure.com/pricing.htm+plano+pure&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=2&client=firefox-a
Another place in Dallas (Soil Menders) charges about $35 for mulch and $45 for compost per cubic yard.
I'd get mulch--it would last longer and compost would just fry down to nothing in these parts without covering it up. What do you need Mitch? Dirt or mulch? Mulch would be compost in a couple of months in the sun...I was just out looking at my spring 18" of mixed mulches and its down to about 2" now. lol
I need mulch - good cheap mulch... I am tempted to try my hand at tree grinding over buying but waht a mess...
Mitch, the utility trimming trucks sometimes will dump a load on your driveway for free, or for a small fee, you might want to call the city and ask if they do that, it would save a lot of money and trouble.
it would but they sell it to a co-op, they cut several trees on our block but said they could not dump it seeing they sell it...
Here is a place that we have bought our pond kits, rocks, mixed soil, and flagstone from. They have an online price list. It is Whiz-Q-Stone located on the east side of FW. They are always setup at the Home and Garden Shows here in FW. I think they have a pretty large delivery area. I looked at the hardwood mulch price and it is $30/per cu.yd. If you have acess to a pickup, they will load it with the front end loader and save you the delivery charge. Here is the link. http://www.whiz-q.com
alright everyone I sent Dave mails to everyone who I think might want to come - if I missed you Dave mail me. I will then send out updates on the event and reminders so even if our threads get burried we will just be pushing forward! We will start the threads on Food, trade lists, and directions sometime in Aug.
I am sooo ready!
Hey, where's my dmail? I'm hurt and crushed.
:-)
Hello Mary, glad to see you surface, we wouldn't forget you for anything.
Mitch may be getting a lot more D-mail than he anticipates! LOL!
That is more then fine - we have a lot of folk in the area that never come over here and I just want to give them a chance to come too! Just maybe they will start posting in the forum to boot... would be a good world! I have heard back from 12 so far and it looks good.
On the side we will still have the threads here and I will add them to the emails I send out to everyone to keep reminding them to get ready. I have my cuttings started - now to see if they take!
You may need to start a new thread, this is already at 229 posts...now 230, lol!
Good going Mitch--it's the teacher part of you...yearns to organize and you are very good at it too (because the job will eat your lunch if you aren't good at organizing, right? ;) ).
Very true - too true...
Now to work on the first six weeks lesson plans.
Debbie Did I ever show you the pics of the logs I looted off the street corner? Now that I got them I am not sure what to do with them. I would like to carve the wood out some and make planters. What would I use that I wont hurt myself. lol if they were cut straight across I could sit pots on them, but they are slanted.:)
Also I am wondering what I am going to bring to the Dallas Swap. I got a lot of Sedum still i would like to get rid of a couple of pots I got it everywhere. Brenda gave me beautiful bacth of a sedum that is to bloom yellow flowers, I want to replace one of those pots with hers. so I will have a lot of Sedum with roots. My Stonecrop collection is growing, love that stuff, it can sure take some heat.
Deb two of the logs :)
I haven't a clue how to even them out Sylvia--I just stuck a big plastic pot bottom on mine and made a bird bath out of it. When it started to rot I just put it out under the 2 big oaks in the front to contribute to the 'woodland' look. Sorry, not many creative ideas here tonight. =)
Thats it Deb!!! ....that is exactly what I am trying to do! love that look. I cant wait until my trees fill out like before.
...speaking of trees ... Mitch I planted all my trees, the Quince, the Buckeye and two more Mimosas. lol Hopefully they will mature before my demise. lol I got two Poplars in pots, one is almost 8ft tall. its over there with the Goldenrod, I got to move it because that Goldenrod is getting ready to do something! LOL
Good deal - where did you find room for all that in your yard? Going to ba a forest over there.
Sylvia, as for your little blue flowering plant, I bet this is what you have. I have it come up everywhere in the spring. It is easy to pull out, but can be invasive if you don't stay ahead of it. I let some of it grow in the back but as I plant other things, I pull it up.
