I watch a lot of gardening and landscaping shows on TV. I've noticed on two shows in particular ("Landscape Smart" and "Landscape Solutions") that the designers are always putting stuff in the yards that are ornaments or sculptures that are not plants or other natural elements. On Landscape Solutions, at the end of almost every show, the host and designer place one last finishing touch that always looks cheap to me. On Landscape smart, I swear some of the designers wish they were doing interior design, but are stuck outside. They always put items in the yard that looks like they should be inside. The last show I recorded included a daybed and a chandelier, so I deleted it before I watched it. Are things like sculptures, chandaliers, daybeds, signs, and statues tacky, or do they make a garden more interesting?
I don't have much of that sort of thing in my yard because I think it looks cheap and cluttery. I do have a bird bath, several bird feeders (functional, not decorative), and lots of rocks. Should landscapes have more nick-nack sorts of things as focal points? Are yards boring with just natural things like plants and rocks?
Are garden ornaments tacky or do they add interest?
