Wow--that's a tree. A a beautiful winter scene...we never see anything like that down here.
We are overdue for one of those real cold snaps in winter...just a matter of time.
What is this?
Wow Josephine you get that much snow? How isit we barely get any here? What a beautiful scene?
Thank you, it was one of those freaky winter days in Texas, but it sure was pretty.
Same here - wow never seen that much snow here... was that this year?
For what its worth I have had wild daturas come up in my gardens (mostly in compost and or manure heaps) they do get big 5 or 6 feet in a summer very pretty plant (odd anyway) usually a very good conversation piece
The snow was two years ago, it sure was beautiful!!!!
Tednugent, I have seen them too, growing in piles of old compost or manure, and they really go to town then, they are amazing flowers.
Josephine.
Oh wow do I have something purple blooming out there! I think its the Blue & Black Salvia, but you guys call it something else. Dont worry I will take a pic and get back to you! lol
Sorry, I've been out of pocket a few days.
Josephine, I would love some datura seed, but I will not be going to the Austin tour. If you come down in August, maybe you could just bring it then?
Mary Lee, I have some Henry Duelberg Salvia, I will take some cuttings and root for you. (I'm getting better results every time I try this.)
The white datura flowers look very much like moonvine flowers, very pretty! Congratulations, Sylvia, on all the new things growing in your garden! Ain't gardening fun?
:-)
It does look like a Moon flower ... :)
Thanks Mary. I'll probably take them to Schumachers' to root, unless you can root them for me.
I think this is the Black&Blue someone gave me, I think it was Sylvia in Red Oak. Verrry pretty I have quite a few of these... check out the Golden Rod! its almost four feet ... I cant wait for it to start blooming...EEEEEEEE its just so exciting! I dont care what the property manager.... I am making a bed out front for these lovlies.
Sylvia, that sage or salvia on the right, I call salvia guaranitica, but maybe it other people call it black and blue.
Josephine!!! That reminds me, I lost all of my salvia guaranitica this year! I totally forgot until now! My Ironweed is about to bloom and is shoulder high, as well as the Frostweed!
Once we move, I'll have to get some guaranitica from you. I just love the color.
Sylvia, I had 14 Datura blooms open last night. My Datura did come back from last year, which was a total suprise! This is only my second year to grow them. It is a great source of conversation every time we have visitors, as the flowers are stunning at sundown. I have pictures from last year with 125 blooms open in one night! Ahhhhhh the scent!
Melanie
Ahhhh Melanie where is the picture? I want to see....
Melanie! it is so good to hear from you. You can have all the Salvia guaranitica you want, I have plenty of it, as a matter of fact I just thinned it out and potted some, so it will be ready for you.
I think you are the champion of datura blooms all at one time, that is an amazing number.
Some of my Frostweed and Ironweed are blooming early too, it must be this crazy winter weather we have had.
Keep in touch and don't be a stranger, we miss you.
Josephine.
Okay, I have been reading this thread and only got about half way through it before I skipped all else and started typing.
The Datura, That suprised you city_sylvia, how is it? And are you growing for seeds. I would love to see pics of everyone's daturas?????????? I might start begging too. LOL.
I am beginning to seperate out my backyard for different gardens and am on the hunt for plants to add to each individual garden for next year. Looking for plants and ideas now through next spring. I don't mind and kind of prefer seeds and cuttings but willing to purchase fully grown from reputable peoples.
I would like to see pics of daturas?
calvin
I'm gonna try to stay cheerful...although this may be year I just "melt down".
TX Stars are 7' and blooming today; at least they were as I drug the 150' water hose
from the back to the front--it is dry as a bone and the wind is whipping what little moisture the plants have right out of their bodies.
Josephine and all..I assume that native datura would prefer a rich soil, will it handle half shade under some oaks? Looks low maintenance for the front yard.
Debbie
Debbie,Yes, it can take half shade, although it prefers sun, and it does like rich soil.
Calvin, here is a picture of my Datura, I don't have a picture of a group.
and a link to the plant files http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/48981
Josephine.
Josephine thats gorgeous! So where are the seeds going to be? Duh? Debbie I got some seeds called "Inula" got them from T&M about two years ago, can you grow them for me or are they too old?
BTW anyone know what this flower is? I saw it at the Medical city Hospital and (dont tell)broke off this piece. it sure is lovely. I got it in some water, sure hope it roots.
hi frostweed,
that is a real beauty. Thank you for the pic. I am envious. I started some yellow daturas from seed today. Just trying to see what happens. I have to try yours though for next year. What variety is it.?
Did you get it as a plant or from seed? I want to know :)
calvin
Sylvia--they can take a month or more to germinate for me....I got some red ones in a trade, would you like me to send some to you? Are you in the addy?
Calvin--its Datura wrightii...PlantFiles link 2 posts above where yours.
Calallily--If you are lurking...did the "black and blue" seed I sent you come true from seed? or have you tried them yet?
Debbie
Calvin, I started them from seed, they are very easy to germinate and they grow very fast.
I think you still have time to bring them to maturrity and I imagine in you area they should be hardy.
If you would like some seed, dmail me your address and I will send you some.
Josephine.
Josephine, I think you are right, it probaly is salvia guaranitica, because the only thats coming up in that area is the natives and a Acanthus that I cant dig out. I planted some B&B in there that purchsed and someone gave me. beside its not dark enough.
Debbie I am slow today, what are we talking about here? lol
Sylvia--they can take a month or more to germinate for me....I got some red ones in a trade, would you like me to send some to you? Are you in the addy?
Sylvia@Work
Did Sylvia say she was supposed to have surgery on her knee today? I wonder how she is.
Mary Lee
Hip Marylee! its the hip! lol I am doing that Friday, today I am getting a root canal done! I am not really having surgery, it some kind of technique to find a place to inject the corti-steroid in my hips. I know this is a ploy to put off the hip surgery ... thanks to my boss. He swears I will feel better. My doctor and the orthopedic surgeons are good friends ... go figure. If I have hip surgery I will beout for three months
hope everything works out okay with the hip and root canal and knee(hehehehe) Sylvia. Best of luck to you.
calvin
Calvin, lets not jinx the knees. lol ...my thinking when I get all these swaying hips ... will my knees be able to take it?
LOL!
Sylvia@Work
Sylvia--I'm clueless...but hips won't keep you out 3 months. I had it done a year and a half ago. My hips have always swayed though...and still do. lol

Well Calvin you started it. lol Debbie why were your hips replaced you are no where near as old as I am? or dont that have anything to do with it? How long were you down when you had yours?
Oh yes I did get my root canal done today, very nice doctor and no pain... but the noise...ohhh the noise! I think they sorta put me out though, they had to tell me I could leave. lol
Only one done Sylvia--left; rheaumatoid arthritis...I was back at work on Jan 24 (it was done on Dec 14). I wasn't allowed up on mine at all for 6 weeks--bone had to fuse to implants. The hardest part was laying on the couch for 6 weeks looking out back at my garden watching the quackgrass and johnson grass grow and not being able to do a thing about it.
Sylvia, I'm with Dmj on the hip thing. I know many people up here in their seventies who have had that done. They have to be careful for a few weeks, but then they're off and gone. One lady I know had a hip replacement and went square dancing the next month. She was atleast 80.
Oh Marylee that soun so encourging, but I dont think I will have hip replacement for a while. the aspriration injection is working really well and I am walking again. for how long I dont know.
Sylvia
Sylvia, I'm glad that's working. It's less invasive and less is always better in my opinion. But if you have to have the hip replacement, the less you worry, the better it'll go for you.
Calvin,
There is a forum for Daturas if you are interested. http://davesgarden.com/forums/f/datura/all/
They swap seeds, etc. all the time. I don't believe I have any Datura single white seeds left from last year myself, but here is a picture of mine. Also I saw the one of the 125 blooms that TXMel posted before....WOW!!
Oh Sylvia, if you have any extra seed I would love some.
April
I need to come get my plant....I have the perfect place for it.
Anyone got any suggestions? Plants already there....crinadonna, hyssop, autumn sage, society garlic, beautyberry (these will stay).
These plants can go: variegaed lirope (not gonna be easy--may as well stay), dewberry vines, lots of nutgrass, ragweed, and.....
