Help with tree needed

It's a man! Only a teenager or a man would mess with a woman's head like that. No woman would ever do that to another woman! It's against our silent code of ethics.

Oh, yeah, right, I forgot. Women focus their evil doin's only upon men! Sort of like the crooks' code of ethics -- honesty among thieves!
Hah! Sofer, Ken, feel free to chime in here . . . Arrgggghhhhh!

I still say it's probably a silly female. And if I'm wrong, come on down here and I'll buy you lunch.

It's a conspiracy.

It was a man!! No, there was no latin names on the tree. They brought out the replacement tree and dug up and removed the gold maple. It rained buckets here last night and I even lost power. It's still raining but it's a slow drizzle and it has cooled off. The Red Barron Crabapple tree was quite large. I guess when they dug it up the burlap had rotted so they loaded it on the truck pretty much bareroot. They wrapped the rest of the tree up but I was worried about all those exposed roots on the rootball. The two men had a terrible time trying to get it off the truck it was so heavy. They put a plank of wood under it and tried to pry it down scooching the rootball. I shuddered and almost hear the tree screaming in pain. They got it planted though finally. I loaned them two of my dollys and two of my garden carts. It's in the ground and looks very nice. It still has some blooms left on it amazingly enough. They put my cement ring around it and mulched it and I watered it. They filled in the hole left from digging up the sick tree and I put grass seed down over the dirt. We'll just have to wait and watch now. It is guaranteed for a year. I should know by next spring if it's going to make it or not or maybe sooner.

I live in a very small one horse town of about 1,000 people I think. This is the only nursery here. There is one other landscaping place but they only sell plants and small bushes ....... no trees that I'm aware of. I guess I could always check out Walmart in the next town over but the selection would be very narrow I'm sure.

Maybe I can get Guy to sell me that new acornless tree he developed and mail it to me. Ha!! I'm sure I can find another spot on the farm to plunk him in.........or is it a 'she'?

It was a man!!

Hmmpf -- musta been a "gurly-mahn" then!

The acornless tree, like all oaks, is an "it" -- oaks aren't dioecious like willows and hollies. This one just happens to be sterile and a superior tree.

Probably was wearing a "washed out" pink shirt. Or maybe he washed his under wear with something red....

LOL...........if you guys only knew how close to the truth you were!! I like him though. He's very nice. In fact, I think he'd make a great best girlfriend.

Guy, how do you know your tree won't make acorns? What if it just isn't old enough to produce them. Sorry if that sounds like a dumb question. Is there any way you can reproduce the tree or is it an gene mistake kind of like an albino?

Illinois, IL(Zone 5b)

Well, the original tree is more than 200 years old; it's the largest of its kind ever found (National Champion, until they discontinued recognizing nothospecies); I've been checking it every year for 30 years because I wanted to collect seed and could never find any even though it's surrounded by compatible pollinators; and occasionally I can find an aborted acorn nubbin. Some oak hybrids are naturally sterile, and this one just happens to have a 30-year track record.

We have it grafted on compatible rootstock, the same way most other oak cultivars are reproduced. I love everything about acorns, but many people want to plant oaks over their swimminbg pools and patios and not have bobbing-for-acorn contests or walking-on-acorn-marbles contests!
