Big Houston Nursery Sale and Radio News
That's a beauty - glad you captured it in a photo for us to see.
Hi Silverflutter,
I like your idea about the jasmine. My mother has it planted on both sides of an old kids metal swingset (she removed all of the swings and replaced with a bench swing) and every spring the jasmine creates an arch around it. It's absolutely beautiful and is great for taking pictures.
I started a list for the fence and that was the first one listed. Also, I read about a Mexican Flame Vine. It grows 8' - 10', blooms all year in full sun and has low water requirements. The flowers look bright red. Has anyone grown this or knows anything about it? I thought the red would complement the red in the ugly old dead end sign. Couple more I'm investigating....Pink Trumpet Vine and Blue Sky Vine. thoughts, anyone?
Bubba...the roundup sounds like fun. I have lots of seeds and startlings that I would love to share.
Debbie...I'm with you. I try to keep everything organic but if you could see this infestation and the wholes in my fingers.....I've tried the water, soap and cayenne mixture but nothing seems to deter these vicious beasts. I read a little about the Assasins and basically, they have a long stinger on their snout that they use to inject a poison into their prey. Their poison can kill a cockroach in 30 seconds. It liquifies the insides of the prey. Now, I wonder what it's doing to my fingers. Gloves aren't an option. I have Lupus and sometimes my hands get numb. Guess it's a good thing after I've been stung.

I know I have trouble germinating the seeds of Mexican Flame Vine but the plant grows really great. 10'? Try 20' here.
20'? Perfect! Is yours planted in full sun and is the low water requirement true? If so, this is definitely what I need for that part of the fence.
Has anyone seen any nurseries in the Houston area that might have one? I live in SL but work inside the loop (right by Central Market, yeah!) so I don't mind driving around looking for it.
Also, has anyone been by the Thompson and Hanson nursery off of West Alabama? Beautiful....all I can say.
I've seen them all over but usually in the mid-summer. That's a small nursery...its ok.
it is small but they get some beautiful things that some of us amatuers haven't seen. kinda pricey though.
All good nurseries are usually pricey.
Uh internet problem solved! I love the Mexican Flame vine, took a cutting from my daughter's. Glad your crinadonna is going to bloom! Glad to be back on line.
Another place to browse! Thanks.
Bubba, I'm glad the plants are doing well. Unfortunately, I don't remember what I gave you.
Silverfluter,
I cannot remember either. Next RU, I'm bringing a notepad. The jist of my posting was that Everything form everybody survived and are thriving - even with the drought - we helped with some water, but really needed rain.
Monday morning awakened to big-time rain. Tied the tomato cages that had blown over with the east wind on Saturday - wouldn't you know it Mondays wind came from the west. As Charlie Brown would say, "ARRRGGGHHHH!!"
Picked about 20 that would get sun scalded. Now wait for indoor ripening.
