Big party time for some, my sisters' birthday is another. May 5. Have a cup, a snack, hope for warmer weather, or rain or cooler weather. It's going to be a great day!!!!!
Coming from here: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/598509/
Coffee and....Cinco de Mayo
Morning - can't sleep - 4:30am....I've been tossing and turning, thinking about all the work I have to get done....it is never done.
Folks and kids are coming over for dinner tonight. Think I'll do a big pot of BBQ's veggie platter, baked beans and chips and dip. Dessert is up in the air right now. My main goal of the day is to pot up the rest of the dahlia tubers that have been laying on my bar/table. I need to get that mess cleaned up and outta the house.
I just bought a new (I thought ) dark blue salvia- gorgeous. Paid an arm and a leg for it (annual) and while looking thru a seed catalog, found the seed and it said 'easy to start' Grr, now that makes me mad....
Oz- you know you guys are the exception to all rules here.... I think your DW should get on here- maybe she could tell us a little bit about you... LOL
Defoe- we have an in the ground pool - been a wonderful investment, but it is 25 yrs old and things are beginning to need replacement. Point in case is the chain link fence surrounding it. I've mentioned for two years that we need to do something, so finally last summer DH bought stuff to paint it -did it ever get done?? NO - I think it will look crummy anyhow, and would just rather get a new fence. So we spend over a hundred on paint and it is still unfinished. If it doesn't get done this summer, I'm calling a fence co. and having the whole thing redone. There will be some fireworks, but too bad. I tend to be a mover and a shaker and DH has to think, ponder and then rethink before he does anything. He moves in slo-mo. Ok, I'll quit complaining!! LOL
Heard the cat upchucking a while ago, so I had to be really careful getting up in the dark and yup - there was a huge mess right in the family room walkway. Good thing I found it before DH stepped in it - he's not a cat lover anyhow and that would send him over the edge. Poor cat has long hair and is always grooming herself. Despite brushing, she must injest a ton of hair.
Well, I could do dishes and get a start on the day, but it is chilly in the house and I think I'll read a couple of chapters - James Patterson- Cradle and All (good book!)
ROFL Sarv! quite a mental pitcure!
Re yesterdays posts....
Wood- Sounds like the house is coming along. It has to be pretty exciting to see the improvements. The propane thing sounds scarey, though.
I never abided by the 3-5-7 thing, personally. Not because I didn't believe it, just that in the good old days most of the time I could only afford one of what I wanted, and I had to wait until they got big to divide them. Besides, I'm too disorganized to plan that much in detail! It does look very nice, though, when you can have the three's in formal plantings.
Oz - we're in the same boat (pun intended). We can see the fish jumping from the deck, and we still havent' been out there with a rod. The bass that I've seen so far are still pretty small, but the blue gills are getting huge. Skip is still trying to figure out the best way to catch / kill the grass carp. He put too many in, and thet have cleared nearly all the vegetation in the pond. We need to put more plants in, but not until the grass carp are back to the right number. They're vegetarian, so baiting a hook isn't going to work. Sooo here's his big idea. He has his duck boat in full camo, of course because apparently fish are very perceptive to these things, achrored in the center of the pond. He has aslo taken one of his deer hunting bows and adapted it. The arrow now has a nylon line in a little jar which is attached to the bow so he doesn't lose his arrow. The plan is that he will hang out the side of the duck boat (in full camo himself) with the bow and arrow, shoot the grass carp when they come to the surface, and then reel them in with the line on the arrow. Gosh, I really hope he does this when I'm home so I can pour a glass of wine and set up a lawn chair. Wonder where we put the old video camera?
Hi all! I had no internet the rest of yesterday...but it was well into the 70's and friends were going trail riding so i quick ran up there so as not to miss it. After I left a big box of daylilies came. DH knows now to open all boxes and put the dls in water!
So I'll be busy today making room for them. My veggie garden is shrinking....I'll need to till more, which means removing more heavy sod, and soil amendments....better get hoofing!!
Laughed thru most of the posts, especially the pool and dh's leaving a trail of compost....Not you oz, you know that!
McCool-sympathy on the asters, I've done that many a time, all that work to yank something you spent time and money planting! Asters do look weedy when they come up (not a neat clump) and they're hard to mark because they do spread! There's one plant I always yank, I think campanula- never occurs to me until July that that's what it was! Sarvs right, you got your whack, now go buy some new plants!!
Sunny again here, and even though i'm kinda tired i'm getting out to work
Here's my baby horse yesterday - isn't she getting cute? She turned one on March21
stacy-coffee out the nose on that DH story, please, please buy rent or steal a webcam so we can all enjoy!!!LOLOL
dmc - is she running in the derby? I like to bet on the grey horse!
Stacey she's more the napping and lunching type...I'm a type C personality myself so.....
Good morning,
We had a late afternoon thunderstorm yesterday. But little wind; so maybe some of the rain stayed put instead of all running into the sewers. DGD and I went out to the store after rummaging for an umbrella. DH brought the kids over here for dinner and we had to go buy something to cook. Only when I put the groceries into the back of the car did I find there was a raincoat there for DGD. Why don't people tell me these things? Grocery store is under construction - they are adding to it and it's not quite enclosed yet. DGD took one look and said "Grandma, why are they breaking the store?"
Have more dirt in the back of the car; so I might be able to finish fillling my containers and also plant the cannas and callas and begonias into pots. Still a bit iffy to put them outside; so my screened porch is starting to look like a potting shed.
Round 2 of the Stanley Cup playoffs begins tonight in Ottawa against Buffalo. The Sens won round 1 a week ago; so they've had lots of time to rest while the other series continued. In this hockey-mad city, it's big news. But they can play only one game - tonight and then have to wait until Monday. Dora the Explorer has sold out 5 shows in the same arena during the weekend. LOL
Off to Aquafit. TTYL.
Ann
Morning all, quick note because I'm off to golf, whether I feel like it or not. That's one problem with a league, show up or find a substitute, so ....
Funny posts, by all means, get the video cam ready!! I'll catch up later today when I have more time to respond.
Sheila
Good morning GOB's & ette's, I cannot figure out where the week went. I know...out in the sunshine and warm temps doing the "gazing" thing and some weeding and planting. Such a wonderful week of weather I feel like pinching myself.
Thanks to all for the kind words about the shop, went right to my heart. Have catching up to do on the threads yet again.
Sarv, you and your dh and me and mine are just the opposite!! I don't dare mention anything before I think it through and through or it is done! And not necessarily the way I thought about. Guess it takes all kinds. If your salvia are the 'Victoria blue' they may even seed themselves for next year, mine have in the past.
dmc, love the baby, way too cute.
Stacy, can pictcure it all to easily. We used to hunt carp with a bow along our lake shore growing up. All I could do was bounce the arrow off them their skin was too tough, and yes our arrow was attached to the bow with some kind of string.
Gotta call drs. for DF he hurt his hand on Monday and now thinks he needs to see a doc before the weekend. Have a wonderful day all. Hi's to all.
Joy
Grrrr... I need the 2x4! Bruce failed to show up with the bus last night even after talking to my sister @ 4pm, so we plan to take back the title and keys today. Which means we are also firing him from finishing the work on the house here. No time to find another handyman before we leave tomorrow morning unless we cancel our trip which we might have to do.
To boot, the girl (21) who is staying with us (and got the pellet shot) was supposed to be here last night after work to help move boxes. Instead she went to a rock band practice with a friend. So now she's on notice that she will have to pay rent.
Hey Stacey, I want to see that video too! :)
Sarv, my cat has an undercoat and is always leaving hairballs around. Yuck. Last summer I had the groomer give her a short haircut. It grew out in nearly 3 months.
VAnn, cute quip from the DGD!
edited to add that they put in a new electric meter this morning. Now it can be read by a sattelite rather than a meter reader person!
Pretty yearling, Dorothy. :)

darius-on coffeebreak from the garden, ouch you're having a crummy time. Seems like when people are going to be useless, they all choose the same time. I hope you don't have to cancel your trip, wish they'd all shape up, heck if we had the bus we could all come down there and straighten them up FOR you, we could even help with boxes!!
Throwing the 2x4 your way. How do you know this Bruce? Old friend -new friend? Hope you don't have to cancel your trip. Oh, young kids now-a-days- so undependable.... I would really be ticked at both of them.
Joy - good luck getting in to a doc on a Friday!!
Vi - skipped H/P again today and man can I tell a difference. I'm stiff and slow moving. I've too much cleaning/grocery shopping/cooking to do and just decided to trash the entire week. Company coming tonight...
Well, my alloted 10 min are up and I need to get my hiney going again.
Good morning everybody. I'm just gonna hit the high spots, lots to do today, planting, transplanting, mowing, all on the list. And I should ride too.
Tully is a year old, wow, she is a big girl now. They do grow fast!
My hubby and I discuss projects a lot, he has some ideas, I have others, one of us usually thinks of something the other missed.
The thought of somebody shooting fish with a bow and arrow from a boat is funny. I do hope to see some pictures of that.
Darius, more delays, how frustrating to have undependable people, especially when you are on a tight schedule.
Time to get moving, back when I take a break. ~~~ see ya.
Sarv, Bruce has worked with my sister for 4 years. Small company that installs security systems, and Bruce is the installer. Works on the side as a handyman. He's in his mid 40's. Old enough to know better.
things like that happen in life . hope you can find him and the bus... and get help from your room mate or boarder.. my husband was one to always help we usually always always got taken so sad but there are people who prey.. hopefully this will come out ok you can go house hunting. My callico cat sheds every where awful.. fills vacuum..we also have freind with one arm who noodles fish..
4 yrs then he must be very reliable for you your post came up before mine...
Love the horse so pretty..

Good morning all.
Hope, I had to be taken advantage of, it is so sad that there are people who will do that.
Darius, drat another delay, or cancellation. I think you need the heavy duty 2x6, instead of the 2x4. I don't like people who do not keep their word.
Mary, sounds like it's gonna be busy out your way today. Be careful.
Sarv, hope all your prep for tonight goes well. I have a long haired cat, and she is always doing that too. DH hates it. When the fence gets painted, are you gonna use a roller to do it? That would be much simpler. I vote with you, skipping H&P, too much other stuff to do.
dmc, I think we all need a short vacation, so let's go down and help Darius. Great that you got a ride in yesterday. Using the word compost, doesn't get you censored!!
Joyous, I don't think anyone was flattering you, that looks like a shop that I could spend hours in.
M5, hope you are up to chasing and whacking that ball today!!
Viann, boy that was a cute comment from DGD.
sstateham, your DH really worked on that plan for eliminating those fish.
Well have been up for ages, but had trouble logging on until about 10:00, so hope the problems are history for the day.
Tonight is the fish fry at a community church. DH and I breaded about 50 pounds of fish, I have the hush puppies mixed up, in a 2 gallon container. Also had to fix food to take to Ohio River Valley Round Up, in Cincinnati tomorrow. Still have some plants to get loaded up to take. I will have it all put in the car, except the plants, because I have to leave here about 6:00 a.m.
DH got the tractor and tiller out of the barn just awhile ago, thought he was gonna finish the daylily bed, but he pulled out of the drive, no doubt to go do something for someone else. You know the cobbler's kids.
Well, got to get moving again, plenty more to accomplish. I will check in later though.
Well, Bruce just called and whined a LOT about what can he do to make it up. Makes a real dilemma for me. On one hand, we NEED to get the work done so my sis can sell this house. On the other hand, I am no longer inclined to trust Bruce to show up, esp. if we are not here. Maybe put off our trip until Sunday? He says he can be here to worh this afternoon, and stay the weekend working from first light to dark.
The deal with getting the bus here last evening was to move all the boxes (and some extra furniture) out so there's more room to work on the house without all the clutter. Sigh.
Helpful suggestions appreciated!
What's that old saying fool me once, ??? CRS kicked in. You know what I am talking about.
Yeah, I remember that old saw Bonnie. But I've always been willing to turn the other cheek so to say, and give folks another chance. BUT IT WILL BE THE LAST ONE FOR THIS GUY!
I'm inclined to let him finish the work as long as my sister gets the title today. After all, she has $4,000 invested in the bus.
I agree. $$ not an amount to sneeze at.
Darius, I would probably give him a 2nd chance too - but where was he??? It had better be a good excuse....plus you/sister have known and used him for four years and everyone makes a mistake. But I agree - if it happens again - out he goes.....
Got the part of the house cleaned that people will be in tonight- but the upstairs is still a mess of dirt and tubers!! Phew, I've worked all day and am bushed.
Made BBQ, but goofed- I was making a batch and a half and added some ingredients like I was making 2 batches - oh well... DM is making potato salad - that is one thing I just cannot make - even used the same recipe that she does and it turns out blaaaah. Baked beans are in the crock (but won't be able to cook as long as the recipe says LOL), veggies cut up and we're having banana splits for dessert!! Along with chips/dip and pickles/olives, I think we will have enough.
I even invited DS/DIL who are contrary and they are coming...wonder of wonders. Look to the north and west - if you see fireworks they are from our house!! LOL
deofe- holy cow - 50 lbs of fish!! that is one bunch of filets. What do you bread them in? I am always looking for new things. (actually ds breads them, but I supervise!!) We've never done hush puppies either.
I asked DH to blow the patio off - everytime I come in the slider I track tree stuff in - he said he would, then promptly took a nap. I'd love the 2x4 back please. I really think I need to get my own...I need to use it often.
Just got invited to another one of those stinkin jewelry parties. This is a friend, so I told her I would not be coming as I never wear jewelry anymore. She can buy her own jewelry LOL.... I only go to those when I absolutely HAVE to and then buy the least expensive thing I can....
Well, I need to take a walk in the garden and deep breathe - maybe by the time I get back, sleepy head will be awake..
Darius, Let us know what happens with Bruce. Where'd he go with the bus?
Comments above make me think I should pull some pork tenderloin from the freezer. It's perfect BBQ weather.
Went to a local well known garden centre and found hostas infected with HVX. Showed one to staff (students) who suggested I talk to the bosses about a discount on the plant. Duh!
But I ran into a young woman who used to work at the Food Cupboard. Hadn't seen her in about 9 years.
Now I need to get outside and DO something with the dirt I bought. But before I get all dirty, I guess I should hang up the laundry while there is still time for it get dry.
Ann
VAnn, the bus is stored in the fenced and locked compound where they work, 60 miles from here.
If he actually turns the title over to my sister voluntarily today, we will let him continue the work. He can bring the bus today, putting his tools in the bus, stopping at Lowe's for the additional supplies we need, and work all weekend starting with loading the bus. If he doesn't, he will not only lose the bus but maybe his job.
Hi, it's break time. I've been working in the greenhouse, it's hot in there! I think I will get the shadecloth out of the shed and put it right next to the gh so hubby will see that it is a priority for tomorrow. Laundry is drying on the line, it might by dry by now, it doesn't take long with our low humidity.
Darius, what is the man's excuse? I sure hope he is dependable after this.
Ummm, I haven't made potato salad since last summer. Hubby loves it, I don't. It was one of those smells that made me nauseous when I was pregnant and I've never liked it since. Recipe? nope, I don't use one. Sarv, try mixing some prepared mustard in with the mayonaise for the dressing, it should just be pale yellow. That gives it some zip and keeps it from tasting like rubber. I hope your dinner turns out good. What kind of meat are you bbqing? (how"s that for a new word, it looks funny).
Defoe, your fish fry sounds great. How many people will you be feeding with 50# of fish and all the hush puppies and etc? Does anybody else bring anything?
AmandaPanda is going outside now, she chases bugs and sneaks around under the daylily leaves like a tiger! I'll take the camera out with me. Gotta go now.
Mary, Sarv... haven't made potato salad in a long time. I always added a few tablespoons of french dressing along with a tad of Dijon mustard for some color and zing. Made one with a few capers added. Sure changes the taste.
Mary, I would not give the man enough time to tell me an excuse, bottom line was he wasn't here and neither called nor responded to cell phone calls. No excuse (short of hospitalization) would have made any difference.
He will be on a short tether this weekend, and fully under my watchful eye. (Assuming he shows up, OR he loses the bus that he REALLY wants.)

Fifty pounds of fish!!! Wouldn't mind dining on it but sure wouldn't want to cook it, or do the clean up after! DD used to go fishing a lot, and especially liked fishing for brook trout. Used to go with his fellow teachers in early spring, and bring home big buckets of smelt. He didn't clean them, I did! Still like them but they aren't easy to find now, unless you live "Up Nort".
Had an ok day at golf, but seem to have placed my putting skills in the proverbial "safe place". It was pretty cool, but eventually the wind died down a bit and we had a little sunshine so overall it was a good outing. Nice to see my golf pals again, we lost two for health reasons and have two new members.
DIL's DIL (LOL) brought potato salad to a party last fall...small red new potatos, sweet vidalia onion, small amount of diced celery, dressing was half mayo and half low fat sour cream , and the hard boiled eggs were sliced on top in a pretty pattern. It was delicious. I like a good dollop of yellow mustard in mine, and prefer Miracle Whip over mayo, because it has a little more zip. Never met a potato salad I didn't like. Years ago a friend's wife brought some to a potluck, it contained boiled potatos and mayo, period. That was it. She had to take it home when they left as the first people to try it, warned the others!
Haven't had a single hairball yucko since Max went to live with DS. There are several hairball remedies available at the pet stores, most contain appealing scents, and Max had to be the one cat who didn't like it. I had to smear it on the top of his paw so he would have to wash it off and ingest it. He got the best of me, once, gave it a big shake, and I had to clean Catlax off the walls, woodwork, carpet, etc. It's greasy and helps the hair to slide through their digestive tract. Once a week is plenty. Outdoor cats seldom need it because they eat grass and get rid of it that way. Hate to say it but ya gotta look at the upchuck and see if it's hair, or undigested greenery from outside. You know how mothers can hear their children, even while they are sleeping? I have cat puke radar, I'll be bolt upright out of a sound sleep. Results in me prowling around with a flash light to find it before anyone, especially me, steps in it. Yeow! These three haven't given me any problem. Oh, last night, Sammi decided he l -o -v- e- s cantelope! (That doesn't look right but I'm too lazy to fix it.)
Came home, vacuumed and dusted, a week without vacuuming and oh boy, did the cat hair I picked up ever make a huge pile.
Almost time to not make dinner. Frozen pizza. Keep that 2X4 moving around, seems like a lot of people are needing it lately.
Later,l
Sheila
Skip has the boat part way rigged up and down to the pond - I'm really hoping he does this when I'm home this weekend! Men with a mind like his are great for cheap entertainment!
I make potato salad, but I had trouble with it for years. I do the tad of mustard thing, but I use ranch dressing instead of french, and dice up breat and butter pickles and red onions to add the tang. My sister uses shredded radish in hers - it's good, but a little too much bite for my tastse. She does a different potato salad that's pretty yummy... potato, white onion, diced cucumer, and 1/2'd cherry tomatoes, then does a sour cream and dill dressing. Yummo!
It's derby day tomorrow, though, so I'll be busy winning a lot of money through the afternoon. I'll have to pick another horse, though, since dmc's baby isn't running.
Darius - sorry to hear you're having so many handy-man troubles. You'd think a guy like that would realize that damage a 2x4 can do if it comes flying at the back of your head with an angry woman on the other end!
Sarv - what time should I be over for dinner? We're having leftover fried chicken
Probably too late for this dinner, but I generally mix low fat mayo and no fat yogurt. A good dollop of DIJON mustard - not that yucky yellow stuff. Can't stand Miracle whip. LOL. I like to use at least one hard boiled egg in the salad, generally some dill and in season, I'll garnish it with Nasturtiums. they taste good as well as making it look pretty. As to what veggies go into the salad, it depends on what I have in the fridge.
I hung up the laundry and it promptly clouded over. Now it's sprinkling and the laundry is finishing in the dryer.
Got some of my tomatoes put into deeper pots. Found the begonias I bought were a kit complete with pots and soil. three bulbs, though one didn't look viable. they were 3.99 each box or 3/$10. The kid running the garden centre couldn't figure out how to get the cash register to ring up the 3/$10 so he charged me $3 each. Not bad for 8 or 9 bulbs AND 3 more pots and some dirt.
Still haven't got all my cannas and callas planted. I'll just set some of the cannas aside for about a week and plant them in the ground. DH is beginning to grumble about the dirt in the porch even though I got it more under control today.
I'll stop by later.
Ann
Dinner is over and it turned out wonderfully - if I do say so myself!! Just regualar old BBQ, but it was tasty, mom's potato salad was to die for as usual. We had brownie sundae's for dessert- topped with caramel and hot fudge, whipped cream and a cherry. DGS was in charge of toppings and he had a ball putting them together. My brother and his wife came out and it was fun to see everyone - but I tell ya, I am one whipped puppy.. played cards and then scrabble and now my brain is mush. DIL/DS were very nice...no bickering.
But I have plenty of leftovers= can hardly wait for breakfast- baked beans and potato salad- nothing better!!
Tomorrow I have to get my dahlia tubers all potted up - my uptairs kitchen is such a disaster
Don't have any oomph left, so gonna sign off for now.
Where's Maria??
OH thank G that Friday is finally here. I had a rough month this week. Kids are really getting out of hand with school coming to a close on 6/8. I am literally counting down the days until my vacation starts and I can go back to SC and garden for a month.
Defoe, we have a built in pool and love it. Only time that I thought of filling it in and creating a garden was when I got the estimate to resurface and retile it after dishing out over a thousand for the new pump and filter system. DH calls it the retirement pool now. Glad you are getting one and I am sure that your DGD will love it.
sstateham, I just had visions of you on AFV winning the grand prize for your home video. I would offer my DH to come help him if we lived closer. I could use a good laugh with a glass of wine.
Darius, It has always amazed me how things can go from smooth sailing to everything falling about in such a short time. Keeping good thoughts in mind for you....
Potato salad. Dont care for the chilled type. Mom use to make a warm one with potatoes, onions, bacon and other things but when she died it went with her.
Well I better get out and water the garden while I still have one. Been so busy this week that I haven't had time to do much of anything. Hope all have a wonderful evening and beautiful weather tomorrow.
Casey
Back from the fish fry. There were about 60 people there, and we furnished the fish and hush puppies, and the rest was pot luck. This was for a church that reopened in the community, and we go there some, just trying to give them a hand with fund raising. Had the usual baked beans, slaw, and many desserts. Had a few fish left over, maybe a couple of pounds,. DH and I breaded them, using gallon size freezer bags. Put our breading in the bags, I used the Zatarans Seasoned Fish Fry Mix, can be bought at most groceries, then dropped the fish in and shook until coated. Then transferred them to the plastic boxes that you use to store things in, I had the sweater size, put foil between the layers, and popped it in the fridge till time for the fish fry. I make the hush puppies, using Martha White Buttermilk selfrising corn meal, add onions, some flour to help hold it together, sour cream, and milk. Just mix to a consistency that you can drop from a spoon, into the hot oil, and walla, the best southern food around. For fish fries, I make the hush puppies in such quantities, I use a new, clean, 2 1/2 gallon bucket.
I am going to the Ohio River Valley RU tomorrow, so in addition to preparing for the fish fry, had to get food and plants ready to take tomorrow. Have to leave the house at 7:00 a.m.. On top of that, I went to a nursery and bought a few annuals, to fill in some bare spots.
Sarv, you certainly had a busy day, with preparing for your "to do". Glad the grouchy DS and DIL came. Hope all went well.
Viann, clerks, and students no less, can't be concerned with the health of the plants. Getting a reduced price was not a solution to his problem. Did you talk to the boss? LOL about the cashier, probally was taught the "new math", good deal though.
Mary, that is cute about AP slinking under the leaves. Take a pic, and let us see her in action.
M5, seems like you had a good day. I don't clean fish, but I will cook them.
sstateham, I hope you get some good pictures of DH in his fish hunting clothes!! It certainly would be cheap entertainment.
Well, I will be MIA tomorrow, as probably won't be home until late. I will check in and let you know how the day went.
Gonna check out some other forums, then be back again before bedtime.
Sorry yall, I am tired early tonight so headin' in. Have a good night and we'll see ya in the morning! over here: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/599087/#new
Sarv, glad that you had a good time, and great food. I make potato salad, but since I don't use a recipe, it is never the same. Most always edible, and sometimes fantastic. I use Miracle Whip, and a smidgeon of mustard, potato, egg, onion, pickle relish, and some pimento for color.
Carat, on 6-8-06 we will probably feel the breath of your exhale over on the eastern side of U.S. And won't it be nice to go to SC to garden for a month. Will you start another school year before moving?
Well, I need to get to bed as I have an early call tomorrow. Looking forward to this mini RU. They have about 50 people coming, so will get to meet many folks.
Any body planning a Derby party for tomorrow? That is a tradition in Ky. If I weren't gonna be at the RU, we would be at a party somewhere.
Good night everyone, will check in when I get back tomorrow night.
