Good Morning to yall. Have a seat, a cup of coffee, a little snack and rest your feet for a bit.
We'll stop by all day to get out of the heat.
This is where we were yesterday: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/598215/#new
:^))))
Coffee and.....May 4 Thurs
Good morning every one, I know it is not morning for some of you but here in the east it is. Molly, I just would like to have some of your heat but not all of it, :-)
good Morning - sun is out, but baaah, I have a day that will be pulling me away from the gardens. H/P in the morning and taking MIL to the hospital for blood work and then she wants to go to Hobby Lobby. Now if I were alone, I would rush in and out, but she takes baby steps and wants to look at everything! I asked if she wanted to go on Mon (rainy day) but she was afraid of storms....grrrr Oh well...
We have a major crop of dandelions this year- I hesitate putting anything down because of our cat, but it sure does look awful. One neighbor has a totally green lawn, the other one has a totally yellow one- we are somewhere in the middle literally!!
Last week when I visited a greenhouse that had 1.29 perennials, I loaded up. A week later they are huge!! I want to make another trip back and load up on more! What a deal!
This is going to be my chore for today. I have a beautiful bugbane that never flowers, in fact it dies out mid summer. Well, it is right in the path of several pines that we took down this winter which means even more sun. Today I am going to dig it up and in the hole, put a big pail and replant it. Hopefully it will act as a bog...hmmm- might as well try!
Balanced the check book- how come I always have more going out than going in!! LOL Time for a garden walk in my jammies- BBL
Good morning,
Cloudy here today with a chance of a thunder storm later.
Will get more dirt for my planters and will try to get the Callas and Cannas planted into something. Might have to get more pots. DH will be thrilled (NOT)
Will have a short practice with my handbell choir. We are not going to play anymore this year, but we can get a good start on a piece for the wedding of one of them which is on our Thanksgiving weekend in October. We're stopping now because I have too many missing at the end of May.
In between, I'll try to get in to see my massage therapist after Aquafit and get a couple of sessions with the viola before this weekend's rehearsal marathon.
Have a good day everyone.
Ann
I've missed the last several days. I've read through, but there's no way I can post enough to catch up. Work has been busy, we're geting ready for my DD's graduation, and there are a million things to get done around here. It just seems like it all piles up sometimes!
Stacy
sarv-in your honor I rolled out of bed and had strawberry shortcake with whipped cream for breakfast. The kids left a few, so I'll put them on the counter....yum. I think the first strawberry shortcake of the season should be a holiday. (actually it's not the first I had three last night oink oink)
Molly and darius-ooh we won't be running from the heat up here!! At least we're up to 54 with sun, yesterday that was the high for the day. Makes my bones ache!
tgif-beautiful! Is i amaryllis?
stacy-didn't realize you had a DD graduation too. So does Casey. And Darius has the kid's. Anyone else?
ernie-I know the flower pics were for suzi but I peeked ;-). And wow, what a lot to get into the ground. Up here it'd be frost before you ever got them all planted! Your yard is gorgeous too.
defoe-Yay, your husband finally thought of getting a pool!! All by himself!! LOL It pretty much works that way doesn't it? Still, you're on your way.
McCool-how nice of you to put in the extra time to make the candle perfect! Regarding the toxins, when we lived in NJ our neighbor had emerald green perfect turf, flawless. One day a bird fell out of the sky hitting our contractor. Then another. THen a squirrel died of what seemed like a seizure. Then another one....I was horrified. Our yard with dogs and 3 toddlers, was fenced, but it does seem risk to wreak that kind of havoc doesn't it? Turns out neighbors wife was angry at the birds that defecated on their patio set so they way overdid the poison! I wonder how many millions of people are doing similar things, then you wonder why there's no clean drinking water left. Off the soapbox again
sarv (again) I wanted to say hooray on using the ladybugs to get rid of the aphids!! Perfect, and so much cheaper than poison!!
Oops I thought I was offf that soapbox. Sorry.
I'll check back, happy day everyone!!
Good Morning all. Have had my quota of coffee, but still sitting in robe reading the paper. There is so much to do, I don't have an idea what to start. I think a good plan is to take a morning stroll outside to see what is the most critical, and start from there. DH mowed yesterday, and since he doesn't bag the grass, threw it all over one of my annual beds, and I need to get that raked up and moved. I would leave it, but have some annuals which reseeded, and the grass would probably smother it out.
So off to do an assessment, then dive in to a chock full day.
tgif, it is a terrific wake up call!!! Just a beautiful sight
Yes, it is amaryllis. It does this every year. These are blooms 5 and 6 with two more buds yet to open. One year it had a total of 14 blooms on three stems. So far this year it only has the 2 stems with 4 blooms each, the first stem has already finished. I do enjoy it every year.
Well, back outside for me. Can't waste this perfect weather. Its 71 degrees, lightly cloudy and still dampish from the dew.
Have a good day,
ginni
dm- ahhh a woman after my heart!! My strawberries aren't going to do squat this year- too many weeds and neglect. I always get mad at myself when I let that happen.. maybe next year. Sure seems like I have a ton of 'next years' LOL
No kids graduating - all done with that stuff- thank goodness!! DIL will be finishing her thesis so we will have a family gala for that (if and when she gets it done - major procrastinator...)
defoe- HOORAY - a pool - you will love it and so will your DGD...about time DH saw the light- aren't they a pain in the patootie. Did I tell ya what my DH did?? We shopped for two storm doors, but didn't get any as we couldn't come to an agreement. While I was gone DH went and got what HE wanted. I told him to take them back - alas, they are still sitting here, but at least not installed. The house is mine to decorate - the barn is his. When will he get it!!!
tgif-love amaryllis-what do you do with them in the summer? I have three in one pot- gorgeous, but this is the first year for them.
Well, never did get to H/P - workout partner called and had to make an emergency trip to her mother's - that's OK with me!! I threw on some grubs - minus the underware and went outside to do gaze....
In fact, time to return to that!!
It is planted in the ground and that's where it stays year round. I generally remember to cover it with pine straw in the fall and clear it off in the spring. Other than that it gets watered when I think of it. This one seems to do best when ignored.
bbl
ginni
Well went out and did a garden walk. I was aware of one annual bed that DH had blown grass into when mowing, but discovered my wildflower bed was covered too. So got the rake, the wheelbarrow and cleaned a whole wheelbarrow full of cut grass from 1 bed, and a 1/2 one from the other bed. I asked him if the mower threw the grass out both sides, he said no, then I said, so throw the grass AWAY from the flower beds, walk etc. He enjoys using the leaf blower on the sidewalk, but it doesn't work well in the flower beds. Grrrr.
Have put a pork loin in the oven. Am hostess for a dinner meeting tonight, that means the hostess furnishes the main course, bread and drink. Hope it turns out good. I use the cooking bags for loins, as they tend to dry out some otherwise.
Since the oven doesn't need watching, I may go crank up the power washer and do the deck and front porch, in preparation for applying the sealants.
So I will check in later.
Morning Everyone!
I just spent 45 minutes in the Chat Room, and reading here. Guess I'm avoiding schlepping all the boxes that we have to load up tonight.
Still need to sort out what things of mine I may need before August or September, including important papers, cool weather clothes for the mountains, computer stuff (back-up disks, etc) toiletries and meds. Yuck. I'm SO tired of living out of boxes.
Plus, I have to dig and pot up 3 brugs for Molly which we will drop off on Saturday along with a couple other plants for her. And, I need to mix some Mighty Plant and spray my tomato plants before we leave on our trip Saturday.
Bonnie, I usually do pork loins in a foil packet with the seasonings I'm using and as much as a cup of dry white wine depending on the loin. Rosemary with fresh garlic is my favorite. Sure miss having a rosemary planted outside the kitchen door! (ps, pool sounds great!)
Good morning. The sun is out and I should be too, so I'll just make a couple of quick comments for now. Ginni, that is a beautiful wake up call, I have one that is similiar named Red Lion. Mine lives in the greehouse in a pot. I've thought about putting all of mine (5) in a big tub or something outside for the summer so they would be easy to bring back indoors for winter.
Ernie, thanks for the bison picture. Maybe the Alaska Marine Highway has a website with the new ferry picture on it, I'll have to see if I can find it. Later tho, no time now.
Strawberry shortcake for breakfast, hmmm, there's a good idea.
Dmc, I'll join you on the anti-poison soapbox. How irresponsible of your neighbor! I hope that overapplication was a one time event. Geeee, birds poop, so get over it! I think she needs to get a life.
Ok, gotta get out there, have things to plant, then have to go to town. See you later. ~~~ (see, you can catch a wave and don't even have to be near the ocean).
Defoe - Congrats on the pool! We have one, and I can't imagine a summer without it. we do pork tenderloins on a the grill a lot, marinated in garlic, olive oil, and rosemary and oregano. They turn out so tender. Yummy. Try setting aside some of the marinade before you put the meat in, cut a peach or a necatine in 1/4's, marinate for 10 minutes, then grill flesh side down just until they start getting soft (about 5 minutes or so if the grills really hot). They're awesome, and you get a lot of gourmet bang for almost no effort.
tgif - I'm jealous of the amaryllis - I have a tendancy to kill them. Hate it when that happens lol
I'm supposed to be holed up at home getting computer work caught up for a couple of work projects. So far I have weeded two beds, answered a bunch of emails and split a couple of hostas. Wish I had thought of strawberry shortcake for breakfast - then again, I wish I had strawberries...
Well, went out to get the power washer, and it is not in the garage. So guess DH loaned it to somebody. Well, he may just get the job of doing that power washing, cause I probably won't be in the mood when it is returned.
I am going to a roundup for the Ohio Valley DG'ers, and potted up about 20 things to take for trade.
Well, gotta run again, be back later to comment
I'm here laughing out loud. After I went to bed last night, my sister left me some houses to research today. One is on Easy Street. Isn't that a hoot?
2 or 3 more she left looked interesting but are now under contract. Sure wish agents would update their web pages more often.
Good morning you busy bees! I've been up early, but haven't done much. My energy level is somewhere below zero. Even went back to bed, but found out I'm tired, not sleepy, but since all three furries joined me, we just laid there and schmoozed for a while. I am going to be dressed shortly. Really. This loafing around has got to stop.
Car's going to cost under a grand, whew, and the mechanic says it's in great shape. Guess he thought better of commenting on the interior!! Hope it's ready by evening, I have to golf tomorrow and I sure don't want to have to use DH's commuter Honda puttputt. I am going outside and do some digging regardless of what my body complains about because we are getting FAR BEHIND!
Strawberry shortcake for breakfast....sounds delish....I had toast!
~~~~ to everybody, I know you are all busy and I intend to get that way. Like right now!
Sheila
Who's got the 2x4? I need it to use on myself. I do believe that I,ve just done a great job of pulling out most of an aster that I'd planted in the little plot outside my store. Thought it was weeds. Duh! I win the Stupid Move of the Month prize.
please please strawberry shortcake whip creamm.. when i went to store see strawb. $$ i went on by then i thought how about a tub whip cream & on sale.. no i didn't bit i did think about it couple times.. got what needed sale items out the door i went.. lol.. oh i had toast to for breakfast... blah...
Well, the pork loin is done, I have made some homemade yeast rolls, and the iced tea is made.
I went out just awhile ago, and applied Mighty Plant to everything. Just waiting for everything to jump.
My peonys are in bloom, and so so pretty.
Made a trip to the veggie garden, and something is eating everything. The peppers, tomatos, broccoli, cabbage, and melons. It is bugs of somekind. So got out the sevin, and took care of those fellows.
|Now need to do a quick shower, and then a nap. Need to be out the door to the meeting by 5:30.
~~~~ at everyone. I have good intentions of commenting, but just too much to do.
stateham, I'll tell the story about the pool tonight,
Seems to be the day for fertilizing. I did the grass/dirt in the back yard as well as some groupings here and there. Used up that granule stuff. Now we are on to Mighty Plant. I haven't got mine in from the co-op yet, but Darius left a couple packs in the shed so Jeremy is out doing the daylilies and tomatoes and whatever else I can think to use them on.
I spread a couple more cart loads of mulch. Man that pile down by the driveway is really cooking. Steams up everytime I break into a fresh spot. Spreading it around in a thin layer as mulch on walkways seems to stop that process. Good thing too. So now we're sprinkling the grass out back. Sure is slow growing. I am tired of the sand and dust that gets in the house. Seems like a waste of time cleaning at all. But after the grass finally fills in and the plantings out front grow up a bit, the sand and dust should stay down better.
It's so hot out I had to come in and cool down for a bit.
Sheila, so glad you are feeling better.
McCool, I can't tell the difference of weedlings and seedlings. Best cure, don't weed until they grow up a little. I am in a new zone this year and haven't a clue about the natives and invasives. I am learning and bascially, just letting everything grow.
Bonnie, a pool sounds wonderful just about now. I'd even consider co-swimming with the fish in the pond. Cept the water is a little murky right now and I can't see if any other water critters have moved in when I wasn't looking.
Strawberry shortcake sure sounds good and the closest I'll get to that is the raspberry I ate off Darius' plant today. Just one, that's all there was. Sweet and a little tart, but lovely.
Molly
:^))))
Back from toting MIL for her blood work, a long trip to Hobby Lobby and a stop at Wendy's for frosties - for ME! LOL ice cream is all gone at home and I was having withdrawals!!
Tonight I'm going to hear an author talk on 'garden design' Both she and her husband are authors - of course I can't remember their names!! I am not a name person. Anyhow should be enjoyable.
Defoe - I've made pork loin 2x and mine both were mushy and stringy. I put them in an oblong crock pot and cooked them on low all day. Ended up shredding it and having BBQ pork sandwiches. What should the texture be? You must tell me in detail how you do it!! I am hopeless sometimes at cooking!
McC - whack whack- now go and buy yourself some more plants.. I usually grow one or two weeds all summer thinking they are flowers LOL It's been windy and cool here today. I need to get some round up on some places, but don't dare use it in gale force winds.
M5- glad you are feeling back to semi-normal. Me thinks you had more than a little touch of the upset stomach...you were really hit hard with it! Nice the car isn't going to empty the wallet...I really need to get serious about getting a new one.
Molly- sheesh- that weather sounds gorgeous...blow some up here will ya. I am waiting until it is a little warmer to use Messenger and MP.
Well, need to wash the locks and look for something comfy to sit in for a couple of hours (they always have the most uncomfortable chairs at this thing tonight)
Sarv, I just put salt, pepper, sauteed onion and garlic in a cooking bag, 1 cup chicken broth, and 1 cup white wine, cook at 350 for about 4 minutes per pound. The texture should be firm enough that it will slice easily.
McCool I pulled black eyed susan's all last summer thinking they were weeds, so needless to say I had one or two left by the time I found out they were flowers.
I don't have time to go into the swimming pool story right now, but it is a year long process. Will tell it when I get back from the meeting.
Gotta run again.
~~~
Many people with the "manicured lawns" around here consider black eyed susans to be weeds. I gather all the drying cones I can to scatter the seed - go figure! My grandfather used to get so put out with all us kids for blowing the dandilion "balloons"! He dug and dug and dug - and we blew and blew and blew!! (Good thing he loved us!!!)
darius, I am so out of the loop because of infrequent visits to DG. I am in the office now, too bored with TV in the trailer next door. Was the drive-by shooting at a house your sister owns? or is she renting since she sold her house?
It sounds like the kid is growing up and is somewhat easier to live with than she was a
year or so ago.
You mention your sister has found her dad...is her sister a full sister or a step-sister? My how complicated some families are nowadays
I made a trip back up to my house yesterday. Lots more work done, but I think it will be 2 more weeks. I am going to try to go up Saturday or Sunday. The workers won't be there and I need to clean some things before they go back up on the wall.I have a cabinet over each toilet and I want to repaint one of them.
I also want to clean open shelving that was over the refrigerator. It is unbelievable how nasty unvented propane can make your house. The sellers claim that the only by-product of unvented propane is water but why would they tell you to keep a window cracked open when you fire up one of those, if water was the only by-product?
There is a nasty brown coat on everything and it's sticky. My spousal unit says one of the emissions is something like the chemical formula for sugar - no wonder it's sticky.
I put 2 plants in the ground on the run while inspecting the house. I hope to get a Don Juan rose in over the weekend; it's starting to bud.
I saw the walls and ceiling of my half bath nearly finished. It's very white and clean. They are changing out the toilet and the sink (which hasn't even been connected in a couple of years). The sheetrock is finished in the master bedroom and the smoke alarm is installed. There was also a lot of work going on in the kitchen, too.
We had to get an estimate for a pump man to replace our pump. We think the estimate is very reasonable. I just hope the grant money is holding out well enough to cover it as we have very little water pressure.
I will hardly know where I am when I get home. I plan to do a big spring cleaning on everything that isn't brand new, lol.
Back from the garden class - it was good. It was a husband/wife speaking duo. One thing they said was to throw out was the planting in 3-5-7 thing- Hallelujah!! I have one of about a zillion kinds!! No order etc!! They said nature isn't planted that way and your gardens shouldn't be either. Sometimes I like the real manicured look, but other times, I like the mix of everything.
Defo - I'll try a loin like you do it- shucks, I never have any white wine - will a wine cooler work?
Wood-sounds like things are progressing! Won't it be fun to move back home! Unvented propane sounds dangerous...
tgif- you need to move- yuck- don't want any part of manicured lawns... they remind me of cookie cutter places.
I'm hungry - need to scrounge in the cupboards...
Hi again,
Thanks for the whack with the 2x4 sarv, maybe it will jump-start my brain again! Molly, you have a good excuse for not knowing what's growing in your new area, but I'm talking about an area of about 4' by 6', all of which I have planted (except for the violets and violas and some weeds which have planted themselves). How it could have escaped my little brain that I had planted an aster in that area, I really don't know. I'm thinking of getting some root gel and seeing if I can salvage any of the stems that I pulled up.
M5, glad to hear you sounding so much better. I wouldn't mind losing some weight, but not by that method!
Bonnie, hope the meal goes(went) well.
Darius, now wouldn't that be something if you ended up on Easy St. after everything that's happened in the last couple of years! I've been trying to get some rosemary to root since my DH committed mayhem on my big plant. It looks like maybe half of them may survive. If you let me know once you get settled I'd be more than happy to send you a couple so you can get some new ones started outside the kitchen door.
tgif, lovely amaryllis!
Here's a pic of the new special candle I just made. It came out quite nicely, so voila ---- peach martini candle
Hi, am back from the meeting. The meal was just delicious. As it was pot luck, sometimes the mix is a little off, but tonight, there were plenty of veggies bread, a relish tray, and several types of dessert.
Sarv, I have found with cooking a pork loin, you can use just about any liquid around. I have used apple juice, pineapple juice, orange juice, Burgundy wine, white wine, you can use just about any spice, rosemary is good, sage is good, peppercorns. One thing I am always consistent with is the chicken broth. I really love those cooking bags, as they keep the moisture in, and the meat doesn't dry out. I have found that letting it sit awhile after removing it from the oven, makes it slice nicer.
McCool, we have all had those moments when we have forgotten what we planted where. From now on, if it is something I have never grown before, I will wait awhile before yanking it out!!
Now to the swimming pool story. Last year, I researched above ground pools, like I do every thing before buying. Got good prices, and DH just refused to consider it. Our DGD who is 10 spends the summer with us every year, and I thought that it would be good to have for her, her friends, and I admit, I have more than a little interest in one. Well, as with most males, they have to believe that (1) It is their idea. (2) They do the negotiating, (3) They have the final say. Well, again this year, about a month ago, contacted a reputable company, got good prices, and DH balked again. Well, I have the means to pay for it, and could have just gone on and had it put in, but thought for the sake of the tranquility of the institute of marriage, better get the "MALE STAMP OF APPROVAL". Lo and behold DH comes in one night recently and said that a local guy was coming on Thursday (today|) to give an estimate. So okay by me. His idea now, his negotiating, we will do it his way. A pool whether contracted by me or by him, is a pool, right? Well, contractor didn't show. So tomorrow, I am contacting the company that I talked with earlier, and sealing the deal. One thing for sure, I will have a pool, I will have a DGD that is happy, and it may be questionable if I continue to have a DH. What a bunch of compost most DH's leave behind. So friends that is the saga of the pool at my house.
Sarv, you posted earlier about the storm doors, same principal, I suppose. Why do they consider us incapable of making decisions about major purchases, when we run their whole worlds, they just don't know it.
I did get a bunch of stuff done today, and feel good about it. I am still awaiting DH making me another bed for my day lilys. The soil is still just a tad too wet to work. So hope the rains will hold off, until he gets that accomplished. Then, I kick into major digging, and moving mode. Have several new day lilys to add to the growing collection.
Well going to make a visit to other forums and will be back to wish all a peaceful night.
Nite all, see ya here in the morning:
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/598874/
Molly
:^))))
Not all males do that defo My wife and I always have done deals together no matter. I do not claim to be smarter than her. I sure would not claim any uppity if I was dealing with a former school teacher. I got a awful lot of respect for teachers NOW. Although groing up it was a real trouble maker.
I got so much to do in the next few days I will not be posting. I got a charity garden sale saturday and have provided 57 hosta plants. I also got a work day at the horseshoe pits the same day. I have flower pots to finsh and a few birdhouses to put up. I got 2 horseshoe leagues next week to play plus a tournament on the 13th. Add this to the grass to cut every other day and the normal upkeep around here. Plus all the stuff of getting ready for the garden tour. That includes replacing some of the low voltage litghing with new latern type ones. I flat refuse to stick them in the ground I will not have one in there crooked. That means I am going to mount them on top of steel pipe driven into the ground. with all this going on I am not getting much fishing done. Even if Lake of the ozarks is only 75 ft from where I am setting ,it is getting hard to get down there. I did yeaserday for 4 hrs and caught 11 Largemouth bass from 15 inches up the 16 1/2 inches. Turned them all loose like always. NOW I am going to get down there again to morrow morning you can about bet on it. Might not post for a few days. So I will not be seeing all the eating that goes on in here and will not be shocked at what Sarv might eat fro breakfast. see you all later.
Oh, Oz, you are the exception to the "male thing". I did not mean to imply that all are like my DH. He is a stubborn cuss, and it takes a little cajoling to get him to see my viewpoint. Don't worry, I am not anti male at all, DH and I have been married for 41 1/2 years, so you know something works. Just have to bring him around to my persuasion.
Hey great fishing!! DH fishes every day, and unlike you, thinks that he has to keep everything. So we have 2 freezers full of fish. It helps that we have numerous "fish frys" during the summer. But he is catching mainly crappie right now. No better eating.
Well, to all, good night, hope it is restful.
