Wait! Stop the bulldozers! Noooooooooo!

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

I'll abbreviate.

'Progress' will soon eliminate any remains
of a very old, small home up the road. As I received permission
from the new land owner to remove any plants I wanted to, I've
been digging here, digging there, getting Iris and Surprise Lilies
at a leisurely pace.

During a most recent dig, I discovered a few poppies, so I brought
them home. The next time I visited, they seemed to have multiplied,
popping up everywhere, so I began visiting daily, digging up each
new sprout, transferring them to my own gardens.

So imagine my surprise to visit today to find bulldozers, large trucks,
men tearing down the fences, pulling the windows out of the house, etc.
Sure enough, they had driven the trucks right across the poppies!
Keep in mind, I completely understand they probably don't look down
and don't know a poppy from a Pop-Tart, but that's not the point! LOL

Contrary to the rumor that poppies dislike being moved, I haven't lost
a single one. Could have much to do with the fact that I am digging up
a clump of dirt with each one, planting them within minutes and watering
them well. Hope the bulldozer guys don't step into the holes
I left. I normally fill holes back, but I confess, I didn't today. Not on purpose.

How sad. There are still so many things yet to move - yet they will be
flattened in no time. Several mature Rose of Sharon in a row, numerous
Iris, Poppies, groundcovers, lilies of all kinds, Narcissus, trees, so much.
I don't mean to sound greedy, I just hate to see all these wonderful plants
become a parking lot. :-(

The previous owner was an elderly man. I like to think he realizes I'm
taking care of his plants from now on.

Oh Wuvie,

Thank goodness you were even able to save anything! That was lucky! Time never stands still and you can never halt progress that's for sure.

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Aimee,

Are you willing to chain yourself to a Rose of Sharon while I
dig the rest of the poppies?

LOL. Just kidding.

I hug trees, just not quite so tightly.

When plants are to be destroyed or neglected, I get greedy.

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Guess I'll pack my shovel, pitchfork, potato digger and a few
bottles of water for tomorrow's hopeful haul.

:-)

I MUST get the rest of the white Iris. It is tall, bearded, and
unlike the other stinky Iris, this white Iris smells absolutely
divine!

Good for you! I've learned the hard way that when construction is imminent on a property, it could start any time. Some of my best plants are rescues!

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

lol wuvie. i'd love to help but i'm too far away!

Mansfield, TX(Zone 8a)

Thank goodness you still have time to save some more of the plants! Hope you are able to make a major haul.

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

Yes, get those iris and anything else you see. How lucky to be so close.

-South Central-, IL(Zone 6a)

Wuvie, I'm so glad you're able to do this! I hate it when things get dozed over like they never existed! But what I DO like is when something is dozed, and then the next year the flowers come up in the most surprising places!

I'm like Billy, when I see something getting tossed, I get greedy, and I'm not ashamed to say it!
