MerryMary your caladiums look very pretty. Your white queens look more white than mine do. I call mine red queens. They are pretty, they just are definitely not white. I however am beginning to think that it has to do with the soil or water or something. I gave my friend from DG a couple of the white queen bulbs I got. She and I planted ours about a week apart. She planted in a pot and I planted in the ground. Her pot is in a shady location, and my bed is a sunny location. I keep thinking that they were just immature and needed to mature but after seeing hers, I am beginning to think it is the difference in the nutrients available to it in the soil or maybe mine get too much sun and they bleed. I may be way off base, just an idea. Nevertheless, I love caladiums, white, red, pink, green whatever. They are cute to me like they are.
Which Caladiums do you have planted this year?
OMIGAWD! That is gorgeous!!!! Where do I get them?
CJT
I got mine at glasshouseworks.com but im afraid I cannot recommend that you do the same.
Neil
CJ, do a search for BuriedTreasure here at DG, as I think he has some on his website.
Don't be shocked by their size, I almost fainted when I saw the little pea come out of the bag....I'm used to Bill's caladiums that are the size of golfballs or bigger. If you can find a plant instead of a bulb, I think you'll do better.
Thanks to all. The hand behind the leaf indicates that it is one of the large-leafed caladiums, right? Not one of those dinky little things.... (I'm sorry, I want BIG)

It reminds me of a butterfly's wing. I googled and found this at Stokes Tropicals, but it is pink. Is that the true color, or is it more purple, like celt's picture?

CT, I had them last year and they were pink. For me, they are pretty but just not what I had expected. But that could be me & my surroundings. Some people may have much better luck with them than I did.
Hi CJ
Mine is a very deep pink and dark green. Where it was in the planter it got no direct light and was pretty shaded. Today I moved it into the garden, ill let it settle and get you another pic in better light tomorrow.
Neil
Bill's picture is very accurate....they are pink and green...and not large, nor very full. I've really decided to stick with the "one" pot that I own, and not get any more of them. They really don't impress me much, although their leaves are attractive.
As Bill and I discussed, the Thai Caladiums really are more of a collector's item, than a mass planting item. A "must have" for an Aroid nut, a "nice to have" for a Caladium nut, and a "I paid how much for this little thing?" for the average gardener.
Chris
LOL Thanks, guys. Maybe I'll get just a few for a pot in the "nice to have" category. I've been a little disappointed with the White Queens so far. I expected them to be white with red veins, and I have a lot of pink in them still. Not that they're unattractive. Just not what I expected.
ceejay.....interestingly enough, the white queen's have been very discussed this season. It seems that everyones this year are much more pink than in the past years......who knows why for sure. Enviromental changes can slightly alter caladiums, so if you plant them in sand vs potting soil, sun vs shade, etc, you can get slightly altered results with caladiums. However, this season, no matter who planted the white queens, and wherever they planted them, in no matter what state or state of being, they all came up much more pink than usual. Perhaps the hurricanes through Florida, which flooded and closed many of the caladium suppliers farms, flooded the fields with extra nutrients, fertilizers, organics, etc? Who knows.....? I know the ones I've had every year in the past, have been very white, with the red veining through the center, but this year I don't think I have a single white one yet come up from my newer bulbs. Fortunately for me, I love pink caladiums of any variety, so the pink doesn't really bother me, it just surprised me. But with everyone now reporting the same thing out of theirs, I know it isnt just mine.
I was warned that they would come up pink, but that the pink would go away. So, I have waited (of course I've waited, what else am I going to do? Jeesh!) but they just don't change. Oh, maybe a little lighter pink.... I thought maybe this magical thing must not happen until later in the season... But you've had experience with them before, and it should have happened by now? Oh well, they're pretty anyway. I think that next year I'll plant some other variety in with them and see what comes back, if any. We don't have good luck with any kind of return here - oh, maybe one here and one there...I guess it's the rain and humidity, but we didn't have that much rain last winter (hardly any) and I still had only a couple of the Candidums come back, which is typical. Mine are in the ground....
Chris,
You described the Thai's perfectly!!!
I "had to have one",
I got mine from Brian. Looking good Brian!!!!!!
My Humboldtii and Parachat are truely very unique!!! I'm glad I got them!! Thanks!!
Bill
Y'know. I don't think you can beat the white caladiums - like Candidum and White Wings. They just look so cool and crisp - even when it's hot as h..e....double hockey sticks outside. Which it is!
The White Wing will even take the full sun, the Candidum isn't going to fair as well. "All" Caladiums are going to do great in Hot weather, actually, the hotter the better!!
Bill
Yeah, but they look cool....and make me feel just a little cooler...
I just got some unnames big white ones with green veins at HDepot here. No camera right now. I thought they would have to have shade being so pale. Am i wrong on that?
The White ones with green veins are either Candidum or White Christmas. They do need to be planted in a semi shaded area or the leaves will burn. Post a picture if you get a chance and I'll tell you what you got.
biLL
Bill I have no name on that strange hybrid it was also out of thailand. As for Humboldtii I have seen two very distinct forms one has some green in the leaves and one very pure white form both are beautiful but the totally white form is hard to find and truely unique. will post some more caladiums up top for ya to drool over.
Bill, lol, I'll take a pic of what has come up so far from my pea-sized bulb. I wrote it off, but lo and behold, a sprout has appeared. Please use your reading glasses when veiwing the pic I will post. I'm still cracking up over it, but hey, it's at least it's not dead! I'll also post my yard being consumed by your caladiums.
Brian, WOW us, we're ready to see what the big boys have....
:)
:)
Let's see some more pictures!!
Hey Bill,
How are things going? I will post some pics soon. I am waiting for my camera to come back from being serviced. I am really enjoying the caladiums I got from you this year.....especially the Pink Cloud. I think I have a new favorite. :-) Hopefully will have pics very very soon. I am getting impatient waiting to get it back. ha ha.
Take care.
Merae
Wow Brinda, all of your beds and pictures look so lush and tropical. Spectacular planting and combinations.
I'll post mine soon....I use a disc, and one of the disc bars came off the disc inside of my computer, so have to get that peice out first (without zapping myself!)
Still a fan of red flash, white queen, carolyn whorton, and florida sweethearts....
:)
