Happy 1st of May to everyone. This is a big holiday in Austria and other countries in Europe
I remember taking one of many riibbons that were attached do a pole and with others dance around the May pole till the pole was totally encirciled with the ribbons. It was loads of fun.

Groannnn, count me among the missing, after we got home yesterday, a mystery bug got me and I spent the rest of the afternoon and all night in the bathroom, both ends going full blast. I haven't upchucked that much since I was pregnant with my fifty year old son. No idea what brought that on but I still feel like a wet rag, and I'm going back to bed, Good on you Molly for starting the new day, it crossed my mind at about 3 a.m. but I couldn't follow through. Will catch up later.

Happy May Day to All!!!! I can remember dancing around the May Pole when I was in grade school...I'm on my way out with DH's permission to take out some lawn here and there and expand my beds :) hey I am not going to argue. He even marked them out with paint to round them so it's easier for him to mow, then I will have to go out to the nursery darnit ;)... SO bbl and ~~~ waves to everyone, have a great day.................Lauri

Yeah, Sheila, it sounds a little bit like food poisoning. A little bad mayonnaise goes a long way. Or even a bad clam in a can of chowder.

Today's the day I turn in the permit. Still have a little work to do on the supplies list and job cost, but that won't take long.

Then it's on to some domestic things. The dust in this place is horrible and the carpets are disgusting. And I hate playing wife to a house. And the bird cages needs a clean up for sure.

Calling all beauticians!!!!!!!! I will trade plants for cut hair, segregated in separate baggies. Over in the other forums we are talking about deterring rabbits from the veggies. We decided human hair might scare them off and wanted to do a sampling of blonde, red and brunette, to decide which is more effective. We also talked about getting a wig head and put human hair wigs on them and planting them out by the maters and squash. Any one have some of these items?

Problem is, I'm a brunette and I don't get haircuts, Jeremy is a dirty blonde, and he can't afford to give away any more hair.

I await to hear from yall

Happy May Day, I remember picking flowers and hanging them somehow (forgot that part) on neighbors door knobs and running!

Had a great first day back at market couldn't have asked for a better crowd or weather. Was a bit anxious about the gas prices but it didn't seem to keep people home.

M5, so sorry about the tummy trouble. Hope you are on your feet soon.

Molly, I have been missing for a few days and just found your pile of chips. WOW would I ever like that in my drive way! While you are playing wife to your house you can come here too!

S'bug, who let you in my house today with a camera!!!!!!!!!! Pay back is ......

Morning everyone!

Project #1 for the day: Take a bunch of old family photos (8 x 10 or larger studio photos, not snapshots) to Kinko's to get color reproductions on acid-free paper. My sister (with my help) is planning a "Keepsake" box for the kid for graduation. A photo of my step-father when he was in the Army in WW2, one of my mother around age 35, one of them together not long before he died the year the kid was born, and 2 family shots (our mother, my sister, me, and the kid) when the kid was 2.

Have been searching for a decent silver chest that's affordable. Since this was a last minute decision, it's quicker to get a silver chest, rip out the guts and re-line it in velvet than to have a box custom-made. Found a really nice solid cherry one on ebay and will bid on it later today. Can't spend more than $100 of my sister's money, so hope we don't get outbid. The new boxes on the internet are so cheaply made unless you spend $400-$500.

I have a sterling silver $100 bill that was in my mother's stuff that will be my gift to the kid. I have the certificate of authenticy but somehow it's no longer with it. Sigh. The silver piece is in a decent presentation case.

Both the Kinko's are nearly into Orlando so I will also go to the bagel shop. Best bagels around, NY style, a small chain of them. I first had some with the nursery guy (where Molly bought all those daylilys) while I was still in Archer. YUM!

I intended to get Messenger and Mighty Plant sprayed this morning but slept in too late. Guess that will be the evening project.

Waving to everyone ~~~

Well, got to sleep in a bit this morning, however, I have been up for hours, and trying to get motivated to move. The first task will be to wade through a ton of paper, pay some bills, and balance some checkbooks. Then on to slightly more pleasant things, sort of straightening the house and knocking some dust around, then the really fun stuff, going to DM's and hanging some new curtains, After all that fun stuff, I may just need a break. In looking at my "to do" list", makes me long for something a lot more fun, like getting out and planting, etc, but it is much too wet to get anything outside accomplished.

M5, so sorry for the upset. I had food poisioning once, (if that is what yours is) and only prayed to die.

Darius, sounds like good gifts for "the kid". I chuckle every time I see that title. Just don't goof and say that to her face. We once had a friend (deceased now) who, behind his back we called "Nannernose" as it was the largest middleface appendage I have ever seen, and my son about 4yrs old, called him that one day, and then said that's what Dad calls you. He acted like he thought it was funny, but I wondered later if that was really the case.

Joyous, looks like a good watering system.

Molly, I don't know if hair will deter anything. We used it years ago to keep deer at bay, but after awhile, they got used to is and just ignored it.

scooterbug, when did you sneak in and take a pic of me? My eyes don't officially open until the 3rd cup of coffee!!

lauriewilson, great going on the flower beds. I wish I had a DH like that, for some reason, he is balking on putting in a new bed for day lilys, in a particular spot, so we are at a detente'.

So Maria, is it back to gardening today? Hope you get lots done, and Samson cooperates in whatever way you need him to.

Well, gonna get the hinney in gear before I completely wimp out on the bill paying.

Just came in for a drink, very windy out of doors but yes, Defoe, planning to gardening all day

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

Good morning. Sunny/hazy here this morning, 25 overnight and probably 60 today. No wind, yet. I need to mow the grass again this afternoon, meanwhile more transplanting and weeding. Things have gotten ahead of me out there already. I can see a trip to the nursery soon because I want to plant things in the new bed that require less watering.

AmandaPanda has already been booted off my lap for protesting when I started to type. She is back again, curled up, purring, it might last this time. If she protests again, off she goes. So far so good. As she is shedding a little we are seeing new markings on her. All of her black patches have stripes when the light hits them just right, and on the insides of her legs where she just looked black as a little kitten the stripes have been visable for quite a while. Under all the black hair her undercoat is gray. I'll get more pictures when I think you will be able to see anything but a black and white kitty. We even see some very faint tabby stripes on her tail when she fluffs it out. Her tail is presently flopping like she is irritated, but she is still purring.

Meezer, I hope this bug is history real soon. Tell us about the good parts of your trip when you feel better. I bet it was something you ate. We always take a risk eating out, or at gatherings. Recently some friends of ours got some bad potato salad at a potluck. Others in the family hadn't eaten the potato salad and were ok. It took them a few days to feel right again. Hubby and I once had a meal in a very nice restaurant, had identical meals except for the salad dressing. He got really sick and I was ok.

Joyous, the pictures of your shop are really cute. I'm guessing that you sell these things?

Yesterday I did get a few dayllily plants dug up and relocated to the new windmill bed. I can see why they weren't doing too well where they were. I planted them several years ago, (hard rocky soil) and just kept mulching the top but they didn't have much chance to expand their roots. Well, they oughta go crazy now! I had planted some parsley near them a few years ago, well, it has been reseeding to the point where I had a parsley patch with daylilies growing up among them. I do like parsley, but this was rediculous! I'll be weeding it out of the new daylily patch. These daylilies are some I bought from a lady whose hobby was buying new ones and dividing her older ones to pay for it. They were all new to me and about $3-4 a double fan plus postage. When I bought them I got a good variety of colors and stayed with the semi-evergreen or dormant types because of our cold winters. I think I only lost one out of 25 starts. A friend from the south gave me 4 others, only 1 lived through the first winter because they were evergreens.

Last evening we went to the sing-a-long at our son and daughter-in-law's church. Several churches had groups that sang and played instruments and the congregation was encouraged to sing along. The words were projected on to a screen behind the musicians, but got a bit out of order a couple of times when somebody decided to repeat a chorus an extra time. Afterward we invited the kids to go have pie and coffee with us. Our first choice of restaurants closes early on Sunday, 2nd choice had just closed before we arrived, (8pm), so we ended up at the truck stop (open 24/7). They were out of apple, out of any kind of berry, so hubby and I both had banana cream pie, I think it had been frozen. I guess we won't do that again. We should have gone across the street to a fancier place, but by the time we thought of it.........

I need to get going so will have to transplant the kitty to another sleeping spot. It's a shame to disturb her since she did pass the lap test. ~~~~~ bye for now.

Himrod, NY(Zone 6a)

Yes, Mary this is my 19th year selling miniatures only open on Sat. and a couple of holidays from end of April thru Nov. It has been great, I could stay home and raise my kids.

Your energy overwhelms me, and we do need new AP pictures. My kitties are staking their spots under the bleeding hearts, must get a picture.

The black flies have sent me inside for a while, boy they could drive a person insane in a short while. DF is soon here for egg salad sandwiches.

Must get cracking, eggs that is.

Hi Everyone,

Well - never got onto the computer before heading out to the lab with my stool test - yeah, I can eat again! and then on to Aquafit. Coffee after Aquafit. then home for a meeting with co-chair of the committee to spend the moeny at church - we have a meeting of the committe this evening.

Passed my old microwave on to the "help yourself" table at the Food Cuboard. Have an appointment in an hour at the bank. It occurs to me that I still have $200/mo going into a registered retirement fund. Trouble is, I'm retired and have little income. Gonna go put a stop to it.

Now, I'm heading outside to play in the dirt for almost an hour.

I'll be back later.

Here's the family portrait taken when the kid was 2. Mother, my sister sitting with the kid on her lap, and me in a business suit. LOL, I haven't had that much hair since then. Seems to get thinner every year.

Mary, I do call her "kid" to her face! She doesn't seem to mind, but then I'm almost 50 years older than she is. (actually 47)

M5, feeling any better?

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

Wooooeee, it got windy out there all of a sudden. It went from a gentle breeze to 20+ in about 5 minutes, and the weather report is calling for more of it over the next 2 or 3 days and nights. I decided it was a great day to dry our laundry on the line, so I have 2 loads out there flapping in the wind. I just hope it stays on the lines. Of course there is more laundry waiting for a turn, but on windy days I can only put a certain amount on the line. It is one of those umbrulla jobs, one pole and the lines go round and round. The laundry got extra clothes pins today but still might not stay on. After I finish my tea I'll see if I can find a sheltered spot to work.

Darius, I hope your niece appreciates all the unique gifts she will be getting for her graduation. What a nice family photo. Somehow I haven't pictured you in a business suit, just casual gardening type clothes and loud crazy sox (roundup picture)! What was your job at that time?

Joyous, I missed commenting on your barrel water system. I think I see a pipe going into the highest one, maybe directing water from the roof gutters into the barrel? Do you have other similiar systems on the other sides of buildings? I see that there is a fawcett on each one, so you can use all the water whenever it is available.

When we lived near Ketchikan, Alaska, we had a roof catch system that supplied household water. The tank was a huge culvert, 12' in diameter and 10' high, set on end in a cement base. In the center was a filter and a pipe leading to the pump under the house. The tank held about 5000 gallons as I recall, and this water was used for flushing, washing, showers, but not for cooking or drinking. We got water from a stream that ran down off a mountain for that, brought it home in 5 gallon jerry jugs or plastic 1 gallon milk jugs. The health department kept saying it wasn't safe for human consumption, but we had been drinking it for a couple of years when we first heard that, along with a lot of other people, so we just kept using it. Apparently we were immune to the wee beasties in it. We had nothing to water outside, so the water in the tank lasted a long time because we were very conservative. It rained a lot there, so the tank was overflowing a lot of the time, but during dry periods we had to haul water in a tank and pump it over the edge into our tank. During one dry period the tank water lasted almost 6 weeks, possibly the longest that area ever went without a good rain. This type of system could be set up for watering on a fairly large scale if you have an average size roof or two and room for the tank.

Oh, I've gotta tell you how the tank got installed. It was behind the house but the house was started before the tank arrived (back ordered for weeks and the house construction needed to be started). There wasn't a driveway to reach the planned tank location, and one could not be built because of the property line location, muskeg and small trees, oh yes, and the prohibative cost. The builder planned to hire a heilicopter to lift it into place, but when he checked the price he devised another more economical plan. He bought a bottle or two of whiskey, and when the volunteer fire department had their meeting nearby, he went over, plied them with some booze and got half a dozen half drunk men to help him upend the tank a whole bunch of times and they got it into place with only the loss of a few small trees that were growing in the muskeg. It was definitely a frontier style operation.

Back to work now.

Hi all
Well, here it is Monday and brother is gone. We enjoyed having him ... even though there's 12 years between us, we are very close. Have been trying to get caught up since he left. Will have to make some notes as there are some things I wanted to comment on but can't remember right now. Hope everyone is having a wonderful day. Waving at each of you!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Mary, the tank or cistern fascinates me. Have any idea what a tank that size might cost? I'd love to have a 5,000 gallon cistern that's spring fed up above the house so there's at least SOME water pressure. (Assuming we don't buy flat land!)

Oh, and I was a Sales and Marketing Exec. when I wore business suits and heels. Our clientele ran from fancy Interior Designers to Builders so I had to dress appropriately. Carried a pair of coveralls with me in case I had to get up on scaffolding, LOL.

Himrod, NY(Zone 6a)

Mary I have one barrel in the front of the house catching the run off. There is about 3x as much roof on the front but I didn't want a whole bunch of barrels right in front of my porch. I have always used rain barrels but after tearing my rotator cuff a few years ago hauling a watering can out of one I have teased and teased for one with a faucet. I even spray painted the front barrel to match the house trim so it doesn't show so much. We have a run off pipe that does drain it to a big flat stone further out in the flower bed.

DH has also gotten 2 big plastic tanks one 250 the other about 375 stationed up on frames for watering different areas of our yard. We have many lakes around us and he can buy water to haul home. It takes $1.50 to fill the 325 gallon tank on the back of the truck.

Sure sounds like a lot of work living in Alaska. Do you ever miss it? Did your drinking water come from a glacier far away?

Hi to I01 and Darius~~~~~~~~~to all the other GOB's

Joy

Lambertville, NJ(Zone 6a)

I'm baaack! Boy have I missed not getting in here. Work has been busy, home has been busy. I need a vacation? Mexico anyone?

We have been working on a project at work for a national animal adoption day. This will pair a national petfood company with one of the big box stores. I can't mention names yet, because it has not been advertised yet. We have been coordinating all the participating animal shelters for the event. Also just one of our busy times of year in general.

Now that the weather has gotten so much nicer, I come home from work, throw some dinner on the table and out the door I go. Sooo much to do outside. Last year we had siding put on the house and built front and back porches. I didn't have time to make beds last year, so I'm slowly working on it for this year. Found muscles this weekend that I forgot I had. By the time I come and and do a little straightening up, I'm ready for bed. Cant hold my eyes open long enough for the puter.

M5 - So sorry to hear you are not feeling well. Hope it's just a 24 hour thing. Tummy upsets are the pitts!

Joyous - Your shop look really cute.

Darius - Giving picutes is a great gift. One of Sis's favorite gifts were pictures of our farm from the 1920's that I had blown up, matted and framed. On pictures has my grandfather standing in front of the house looking very dapper as a young man.

Maria - Hope you had a good day of gardening!

Time to go home now. Hope things slow down enough that I can keep up now. I really miss you all when I don't get to check in.

See ya!

Retail therapy is the best!! Me and my 15 DS went shoping today he got a gift cert from his dad and needed clothes, and I spent a bit too, got some clothes for the girls, and a big t shirt for me, and spent 80 at walmart, on more clothes for the girls and a couple books, potting soil and 4 in planters for my new AV's. I'm in a much better mood.

Dh and I are ok, haven't said nothing about the other night so I guess its better left alone for now. We'll see

Well, I have to mix up perlite and potting soil for my AV's so bbl hopefully :)

Janis

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

Darius, I have no idea what the big culvert cost, or where the contractor got it. The house was finished and almost ready to move into when we first saw it under about a foot of snow, with the water system included as part of the price. I would guess that if you contacted the highway department they might be able to give you the name of a supplier they deal with, but that is only a guess. Otherwise, try Google.

Joyous, no we didn't have glacier water for drinking, there were no glaciers close to us there. It was rain and snow melt water that just formed a little stream as it came down off the mountain. Somebody had dug out a pool and put some heavy boards on the lower side with a small pipe through it. We just put a jug under it and got them full quickly and easily. I prefered to deal with single gallons (milk jugs) rather than trying to carry 5 gallons at a time back up a little trail to the car. My husband liked the larger "do it all at once" approach. The drinking water stream was about 8 miles down the road toward town, but since we had to go nearby for our mail and groceries we just kept empty jugs in the car at all times, and always stopped to fill jugs on the way home. For your watering system you could have a row of barrels behind a lattice screen and then grow a vine on it, something like a honeysuckle that doesn't die back to the ground every year. Also, can you run a pipe around the house to fill barrels on the sides or back using water from the larger section of roof?

Welcome back susieq. We've been just yackity yacking away here as usual while you were busy.

I think I learned something the hard way about not refreshing the page if you are typing something to post. Poof !

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

I;m backkkkkk!! Three days away from DG is too much!! Gotta prioritize....

We had a ball - went to a zillion garden centers, a metal work garden place (oh if only my car was bigger!), pottery place (tour of the inner works...) took a garden photography class- man learned so much!! At at a 'real' Jewish deli-oh man the food!! and several quint restaurants...But now I am home.

You would laugh at our trip home. My cousin's wife and I were gabbing the entire way and went almost to Ohio (miles and miles and miles out of our way on the turnpike.....Oh we laughed and laughed... Took hours longer to get home...

Got home, took a garden tour and everything in the greenhouse is alive and well. At the garden photographer's house, I purchased several of her photos, which she makes into cards. Got some for the my neighbor who watered and opened and closed the greenhoue. It is of a beautiful blue iris= she just got one for her garden, so I know she will enjoy it.

Hope everyone is well and life is treating you all splendidly. I am bushed, gonna get the jammies on and hit the hay.

DH went and got two new storm doors while I was gone(I showed him ones I wanted last week and he poo pooed it) well, he got the wrong ones!!! I'd love the 2x4...and I've only been home an hour!! I swear he never listens to me!!!

Well, time to spend some time with the kitty and then get some needed shut eye.

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

No, not better yet. Had a piece of toast this morning that seems to still be sitting just below my esophagus, ugh. Sticking to water. had to catch up though, otherwise will be reading for hours tomorrow. Bed. Again. Ugh. I hate this. whi-i-i-i-i-ne

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Well, I hadn't missed as much as I thought I had.

Mary, I LOL about the placement of the water tank. I guess using drunk firefighters would work with that, but wouldn't want them packing china!!

Joyous, nice pictures of the shop. And I agree with Mary's suggestion of putting in the barrels, and hiding them with lattice work, and growing a vine of some type.

Viann, glad you got the tests to the lab, and had a little time in the garden.

Darius, Gosh that was a nice photo. I just love it when a family member gives me old photos as gifts.

101, glad you are back, and that you had a nice visit with DB.

susieq, sure hope for your sanity that work slows down, and you can get some gardening done.

Woofens, new anything always is a pick me up for me.

Sarv, LOL, about the detour. I did that once, DH put me behind the wheel, at night, said watch for exit so and so, he promptly went to sleep, and I drove 150 miles out of the way. Come to find out there was no such exit as he said!!.

Well, it was too wet here to get out and garden today. So tackled the bills, and then straightened the house, did some things at DM's and then just rested this afternoon.

Of course supper, I did clean the refrigerator, so much better. Did do a garden walk, and found that the plant I was trying to ID in the wildflower bed is a corn flower, it is blooming. I will get a pic in the next day or two, as only one bud is opening now. I also have a corepsis that is budding. All the plants I put in Friday night are looking good after the rains we have had.

Had a nice chat with McCool today, as this is a day off for her.

Think I will hit the shower and then get comfy doing some reading.

I will be back later.

Oh M5, please feel better soon. I will send healing thoughts.

Last evening check-in. Spent to much time in meetings and not enough in the garden. It's supposed to start raining tomorrow. We need it, but I hope it's just showers. I'll have to go protect my bucket of alfalfa tea or better yet, water my hostas with it. It's been brewing since Saturday; so it ought to be ready to go tomorrow, I think. I've been pullling the old soil out of planters. Dry and dusty. I really need a mask. I'll put it in the bottom on larger patio pots and put new soil on the top and in the planters. I've got most of my seedlings outside in the shade. Hope they STAY out there, but we could still get another frost.

That Irish Spring stinks so much, it ought to keep rabiits away.

Welcome back to sarv. Sounds like you had a good trip.

Hope you all have a good night.

Ann

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Well, I have caught up on all the forums that I usually check in on. Seems like most had a good day, and got some things accomplished. Unfortunately, or fortunately, however you look at it, it was too wet for me to do much outside. The plants sure loved the free shower. They are predicting more rain for tonight and tomorrow morning. So it looks like it will be several more days of not gardening.

Well, I am going to watch the news, and I will come back and check later for all before I go to bed.

See ya over here tomorrow: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/597895/
