Episcia are easy an fun to grow ! Fun to share my way !

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

They look fabulous...now don't pinch them :)) just take off stolons when large enough to pot on own...they will branch and fill pots without pinching.!

Thanks, Allison.

Your Welcome ! Do you have any Epscias ?
You and Don can both looking for boxes soo :))
2 of yours mailed the same. Watch you two so they are not out in the sun !

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Epsicas have to be one of the most fun, easiet Gesneriads to grow and share and they need very little care. Progate wow root in days to week tops then start growing new plants to share !

Drumheller, AB(Zone 2a)

Hi Allison,

Yes I have a few of them. I really enjoy them and they do grow like weeds.

Joanne

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I like people to know how easy they are to progate, grow and enjoy with little care ! And their so pretty !

Drumheller, AB(Zone 2a)

Morning!

I am finding I am having better luck with some under domes because like you say Allison they love warmth and humidity.

Joanne

Edison, NJ(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Allison, for posting this "how to". I just got my first episcia (Suomi), and it had two fair-sized babies ready to be potted up. I did that on Saturday, and put them in 3 oz. solo cups in a little seed-starter tray (with lid) that I use as a greenhouse.

Boy, have those little babies perked up! I think they might have even grown just a tiny bit (the center leaves seem bigger)!

There are two more babies on the mother plant, but I want to wait until they are a little bigger before potting them up on their own.

Do episcias require a lot of water? Or does it depend on the room conditions? My AVs usually need watering 1-2 times a week (sometimes the minis and semi-minis need water a little more often). But the episcia has had to be watered every day since I got it. Is this normal?

Stephanie

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

I find watering is different for everyone and the time of the year. In summer even with A/C my garden room gets warm in the afternoon . I also have a fan going. Yes my Epsicas
are hungery little children. They also like to be misted .
I fount Suomi for one needs more humidity.
I also water my AV's 2-3 times a week . The babies and minis, semis even in this heat every other day. I even let them sit longer in the water.
But I no longer turn around and their dry again.
I still have hundreds of babies, leaf pots ...I am working on packling then I also must stop to make sure their watered and getting great care before I can send them to their new home.
My light stands and lights are gone but their in a room full of windows.
Soon Mega hugh boxes will be coming to you !

What a great thread. But...I'm a total novie...what is wicking? I'm guessing it has something to do with the pink cord? Could you please explain this concept to me?

I got my first streps and an AV in a trade some months back (thank you Gloria!), and they are doing great. These look so cool, I think I will have to give them a go, too! Watch out, Logee's - Here I come!

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Here's an excellent link about Wick Watering !
There are more in our sticky's first two threads into the forum.
Also many threads if you do a search .

Bumping up this is the easy way I get new plants rooted fast for sharing. I do this same method for all my Alsobia Cygnet Stolons also which has given me hundreds of Cygnets to share in the past few years from one tiny plant :))

Allison: Great information! Thank you so much! I don't have any epescia's but hopefully one of these days I will get one to try! Gorgeous Plants!

Lin

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Lin this is what Epsica stolons are and how you porgate them :))

(Zone 1)

Oh Allison!! That is wonderful information, directions and photographs! I printed it all out to keep so I can refer back to it. I really do want to try an episcia - they are so pretty and you say easy to grow?! I can't wait to get my first one! I wish spring would come soon up north so the greenhouse/nursery places would ship again!

Thank You, Thank You!

You are just so very sweet to educate me and a lot of other people out here in DG land!

These are the very instructions I needed today.....going to bump you up!!! thanks....Hello, Lin!!!

(Zone 1)

Gail: Thanks so much for bumping this up!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I just butchered a mini that had several plants......I emailed Allison of course....I washed off all the roots with the water from the kitchen spigot (laughing out loud).....I think it is time to make one last official plea to let Allison contribute to our fun. after all, she is the one who started AV Bingo.....

Great article and photos

Seymour, IN(Zone 5b)

gessiegail- I second your motion for Allison's return. I'm a real newby at propagation and she was my teacher. I feel like I had to cancel my classes due to a teacher shortage. Nothing teaches like pictures and methods from experienced growers. Lou

You know, sometimes you find a plant that's mislabeled and it's just so obvious what it's real name is, you don't really need to send it to Optimara for ID. Don't you just love it when you can do that?

I enjoyed this article with the step by step pictures of how tp progate episcias ! I just got my first two and they have stolons I'm glad I fount this easy step by step pictures just in the right time!
Very easy to understand made my potting up of stolons fun, easy and no stress I did not want to kill them they came from a good friend.
Thanks Allison for this wonderful thread.

I just fount this great link on growing Episcia and the difference between them and African violets !

Do you grow any Episcias ! ??

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Well Hello Susan.Where have you been hiding girl?Haven't seen you around for awhile.Nice to see you posting again : )

Robin,I grow a few episcias but they don't seem to do as well for me as the av's.Its really hard for me to keep the humidity up like they need.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I've got some episcias on a gravel tray on a shelf in the bathroom, and they seem to like it there pretty well. I try to keep a little water in the tray for extra humidity around the plants (plus, being in the bathroom helps)... the gravel keeps the actual pots up out of the water, although several of the pots have little wicks going down into the gravel and water on the tray, and that seems to work also.

BTW, the "tray" I'm talking about is a plastic bottom piece that's meant to go under a window box. It's white, and it's just the right size to fit my melamine shelf!

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Thanks Critter,What a clever idea.I never thought of my bathroom and using a tray for extra humidity. That should do the trick.I am going to give it a try.I really love episcias but like I said the humidity issue was holding me back.Hey I might be able to do ok growing them after all. Thanks a bunch for the advice!
Nancy

Good idea Critter. I'll try it also. I'll bet your bathroom looks real nice. Do you have pics? (Nancy, very sweet, thank you)

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Yes pictures please Critter.I think I have it figured out but sometimes my mind sees things differently than they are explained. If I could see a visual it would help me alot.

Edited to add: Susan,What kinds of Epicias do you grow? My favorite is Suomi,I think that what its called. It gets the most gorgeous yellow blooms. That one I do keep in the kitchen and it seems to do alot better for me than the others I have.
