Possibly change the name of Curb Appeal?

Stanford, CA(Zone 9b)

As Terry knows we have been discussing a change in the name of 'Curb Appeal'. There seems to be some confusion about it being limited to front yards.

The concensus on the forum has been that we would like the name changed to Garden Design. We understand that there have been problems and the name was changed to Curb Appeal for a reason, but we'd still like to try it again.

We had a long discussion there so if you'd like to make a suggestion, please read the curb appeal discussion first.

Curb appeal does seem to lend to things in the front yard but if you are talking about whole garden design doesn't that fit under the "Garden Talk" forum? I'm no expert just wondering if Garden Talk isn't a catch all forum for more detailed garden specific ideas whereas some people who aren't as experienced in gardening might start looking under Curb Appeal? I know that was one of the first places I looked at because of it's name was so specific and the front yard would make the most impact on my new home so that's where I began.

I always considered Garden Talk to be sort of for chat and perhaps topics that don't quite fit anywhere else.

Garden Design (and I'm in favor of the name change), is, to me, an appropriate name for a forum including questions directed at improving the appearance and functionality of the garden as a whole, or at least of substantial parts of the garden. The "functionality" part is part of why I like the name change - Curb Appeal, to me, is just about appearance.

So, Garden Design would be an appropriate forum for questions like:

- How can I make my garden easier to maintain but still beautiful?
- What should I plant in this new bed?
- Our guests never go out in the garden. What would make it more welcoming for them?
- How can I hide the trashcans?
- Will stone pathways be too grand for my house style?
- How do I protect the plants from the dog?
- What are good planting strategies that will make my ten thousand different plants look like less of a mishmash?
- Here's a picture of my garden. Why is it somehow unsatisfying?
- The kids are leaving and don't need a play lawn any more. Here's a picture; once I take out the lawn, how would you recommend planting the space?

Now that you mention it, I do think that a place for people new to gardening could be a good idea, too - named "New Gardeners", or something.

One more function should be: Here's what I did with my garden and how I designed it.

Using it as a place to post remodels or garden diaries of remodels would be great. We need to learn from each other about what worked and what didn't, or just to be able to share with someone our excitement over the change in a small bed, or the change in an entire garden.

Actually we have a "Garden Tours" forum and personal diaries/blogs for exactly that ;o)

Oops, missed that. Guess I'm going on the old forum list. Need to get myself up to date. :-)

What about "Element of Design", "Design Element", "Design Appeal", "Garden Appeal".....I do pop over there to read but it's one of the forums where I am quiet. LOL

When one thinks about the meaning of the word Design some of the more immediate thoughts that spring to mind is that design implies that some sort of artistic plan or creative thought process has been mulled about.

When you think about what design does for us, you can come to the conclusion that it addresses a dilemma or a challenge through thoughtful planning and consideration. Eventually (hopefully) a solution will be found while deliberating during the design process .

Design is the process of defining the circumstances that you have to work with ( Site Analysis ) while analyzing your personal goals, desires , and needs ( Personal Analysis ) .

It’s a visceral process that can behave like an onion. The more you peel it, the more you realize there are more layers to it than you originally thought.

Put the two words together ; garden design for a descriptive forum title and what will come out of it ?
Well, hopefully intelligent banter about how we as gardeners can create aesthetically pleasing arrangements that are in context with our surroundings while at the same time solve challenging problems in our landscapes.

How about "Yard Improvement"? Jo

I think the people that most frequent that forum have pretty much made up their minds and settled on the name "Garden Design" and are waiting for approval from the big guy.

Thanks Terry or Dave - very creative to use the AKA Curb Appeal. I know that all the folks who wanted the change will be happy and the people who didn't will appreciate it too.

I figure we'll phase out the "Curb Appeal" in a few months, once everyone's gotten accustomed to the new (errr, old...retro....whatever) name ;o)

Good figuring. Genius does come from experience. :-)
