LOL, thought this would be a neat alternative to my other thread.
We opened our wedding presents among family and a few close friends. In one box was something very strange. It was a box that said "crystal chip and dip bowl" but the bowl inside looked like glass. The bowl had a round orange $5 sticker on it. The wrapping didn't cover the box and on the bottom to seal it off was another wrapping paper of Christmas design turned inside out so the white showed. Inside a card found later and unattached (I think it was unsigned too) was a $5 bill to "enjoy moments together eating chips and dip." It was so funny!!!! Either someone gave all they could or wanted to give us the one gift we'd never forget! My parents friends wanted us to give it to their daughter whenever she might marry with the same message. LOL. We did end up "re-gifting" it to another friend who married, same story but a new unsigned card. We also left a more personal gift on the gift table too. So fun!
And The Weridest Present Was...
Weird gifts, oh boy, did I ever get one. And still have it!
21 years ago, my husband at the time announced we were going
to have a baby. Because he was the son of a business owner, we
received many gifts from people we did not even know.
One lady in particular wanted to do her part in impressing the boss,
I suppose, so she gave us a gift - a little hand crocheted baby blanket.
But it was not pink. Nor blue. Nor yellow. Or mint green. Or even close to
something you would give a baby.
No siree, this thing was butt ugly brown. Not nice chocolate brown, or
dog biscuit brown, but dirty floor brown. And to top it off, it was trimmed in
dull gray. Quite a sight. The woman who crocheted it was a heavy
chain smoker, and thus, it came reeking of such. Sad, but true, I'm sure
she's long since laid to rest.
Oddly enough, the first time we used the blanket as a cover during
transporting the baby, he latched onto it and the rest was history. We could
not go ANYWHERE without that blanket, his 'lovey'. He was still clinging to this
ugly thing when he was almost four! Everyone else had those cute and adorable
puffy quilts with little horsies and duckies in pastels, but not us. We had the
infamous Butt Ugly Blanket.
To this day, we have the 'lovey'. It endured many babysitters, numerous
washing and drying cycles, and still held it's own.
I laugh when I think of this silly thing. I have a picture of my son sucking his
thumb while cuddling his Lovey, I'll post it if I can find it.
Wuvie,
Holy cow. LOL!!!!! Girl I have a story soooo similar and forgot it til you brought it up. I met (won't reveal the family source, lol) but met an old lady on my husband's side...she was a chain smoker too. She'd croquet a storm and her whole tiny house was covered in yard and blankets. She made us one for our wedding. It wasn't....brown....it was more like Joseph's coat of many colors!!!! I mean pastels, brights, blacks, browns, you name it. One would end or run out and another color was used. The only consistency is it is edged all in navy blue. BUT because I LOVE croqueted blankets (my grandma used to be a pro at it and 20 years later still use the one she made me), I have kept this. It was nice when the cigarette smell FINALLY washed out. Whew-ee!!!
