Server installed tomorrow (4/19/2006) - expect some downtime

I'm heading to Dallas first thing in the morning to install our 5th server. Throughout the day the site may be up or down here or there as I move services around. I'll be careful to minimize any downtime, however.

Once king is installed, over the coming days I will be able to configure it to be our new database server. I expect that the slowdowns we've had lately will be able to get ironed out over the coming weeks, thanks to the new server.

For the curious, here are the stats:

4x) Patriot 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200)
Motherboard: Tyan Tomcat K8E(S2865G2NR) Socket 939/nForce4/PCI-E/SATA2/2GL
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor 4400+* (2.2GHz) A64-44CDBX
HDD: 4x) Maxtor 6V300F0 300GB SATA II 7200rpm 16MB Hard Drive HD-MX300VF

The drives are in two RAID arrays:

/dev/sd*2 = 100G RAID6 array.
/dev/sd*3 = 900G RAID0 array (4 drives in RAID0 = better than double speed)

Thanks for the heads up and have a safe journey :)

Thanks :)

It's like remodeling, there are "down times" but the results more than out weight the minor problems. Thanks for keeping us in the style we've come to expect from Dave's Garden. Safe journey.

Well congradulations on the birth of your fifth addition Dave!!

Wow! these threads are loading so fast this morning, I don't even have time to go take a pain pill for my headache! :-)
Maybe I can 'rest' while the new server is being installed.
:-)

The 'place to be' on the web just keeps getting better! Did I mention I love this place?

Greetings from Dallas. :) I'm standing next to our servers and am typing this with my laptop. The laptop is actually resting on top of "spirit" which is the main DG webserver.

I just got here 15 minutes ago and I'm getting setup. The work begins now and will continue for about the next 6 hours.

I don't know what has happened already but the site is working with amazing speed this morning! Barely touch a link and you are already there - can't get any better!

Thanks,
Louise

The server king is installed now and is in fact currently hosting the database for DG. We'll see how well it goes from here.

Thanks for the heads up. This seems to have affected the SCIF store too, so now i know why, and i will not worry and just wait.

Better is always, well, BETTER!

It's certainly behaving slowly right now. I'm on a cable connection that averages 25MEGS, and some of the forums are crawling.

I presume it's part of the tweaking process.

I'll go back outside and cut some more sod. ;>)

Yes, I'm transferring all of DG's files (most notably the pictures) over to king, which is quite a big job for these servers. There are almost a million pictures to transfer

Cant wait for the tweeking to be done, the site is a bit slow on the opening of pictures and Im on cable also.
Hope all has gone well with the setup. OH and Thanks much for not doing this Thursday morning, LOL.

Edited because you answered any question I might have had about pics taking so long, kinda figured King was the reason what with all the transfering and what not.

Yours may be slow Dravencat, mine are just NOT there! I went to a thread which took ages to load, there are 2 pics of someone elses, mine are missing. I checked another thread in the European forum, a couple of pics were there, the rest missing. I checked my PF pics of which I have 253, blank!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Give it time, wallaby1 - it can take a while to transfer nearly 1 million pictures from one server to another ;o)

Just wanted to report that after going through my watched threads and clicking refresh, the same threads are still appearing as not having been read.

Molly

As far as I know, all the problems are worked out and my work here is finished.

I left home at 6:45am and it's now 6:45pm which means that it's good timing for me to leave.

I hope DG runs smoothly tonight. If there are any strange things you notice, please post them here or start a new thread in this forum.

Enjoy your evening.

PS for Terry: the graphs finally work now. :-)

dave

Pictures have disappeared in a thread I started earlier tonight. They were there for a little while after I started the thread, but now the thumbnails are gone.

Thanks for all your hard work, Dave! I sure do appreciate it and don't mind the little problems while the bugs get worked out. I tell you problems not to complain, but to alert you to the fact that they're happening. DG is way too great to fuss about!

re: the graphs - yay!

It is Thursday the 20th ...
Just checked a thread that pics only had placemarkers, still has a few that haven't appeared yet. Keep up the good work guys, you'll have a weekend yet!

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

Just to report about pics on the Southwest Gardening forum, recently posted pics not appearing, legacy pics seem to be OK. Kinda like alzheimer's. :-))

Thanks for doing all this work.

GM Dave! Just thought you might want to know, I'm not getting a newletter. When I click on it, I only get a blank page.

Hope you have a good day!

wallaby, if you're reading this, you are wanted on the rose forum, post haste!!!

The pictures should all be fixed up now.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

Looks good Dave. Thanks.

Thanks Dave, you're the greatest!!!!!

Cruising nice and fast here! Love it!

(I think Dave had an enjoyably good day yesterday, eh!? Congrats!)

Shoe.

I agree, cruising nice and fast here to. Although I'm still finding only placemarkers for some pictures. Most show up, but some do not. Will this fix itself over time?
Christine

The picture issue should resolve itself over the next hour. Shift-refresh might be a good idea if you run into this in the meantime.

dave

Many thanks Dave.

Dave my picture is in the PlantFiles Picture Forum http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/593864/ but it isn't here: http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/130221/index.html

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

In this thread http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/593721/ pictures were downloaded but the boxes with the red x aren't even present ...... only this can be seen "Click the image for an enlarged view."

Lilypon - great reports! The links helped tremendously.

I found a few images that were hiding on a different server and I'm rounding those up right now. They should be viewable within a few minutes.

As for the missing PlantFiles images - those will get there, too but a little bit later.

Thanks Dave......I sure don't envy the headaches you must get at times like these. ;)

Compton, AR(Zone 6a)

Dave, I sure hope you have the patience of Job. :-)

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Lilypon I just looked on the Plantfile link, no pic, but if you go to the bottom and click 'Switch to live view' it will show up.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Good to know it's hiding there somewhere wallaby. :) My DS is in your country now.....tonight is his last night there. He loved every second of it and I imagine, in a few hours, they will be using a pitch fork to get him to board the plane. ;)

All the PF pages are being updated right now. The process will run for a couple hours but after it's done all the PF pages will be up to date.

Well Dave, thankyou for all your work for DG. I was having a surgical procedure this past week and missed knowing all that was going on. Everything finished for my procedure and now that Dave you have had time to do what you needed to do I will just enjoy all the photos etc. Thanks
