Joan - Tara is such a good garden center. I was there a couple months ago and those same pots were just dirt. Now they look so good!
Fortunately our yard is pretty hedged in so the neigbors can't see me talking to the plants and they just stay inside most of the time anyway.
When I'm discovering my plants coming up this time of year I'm always saying things to them like "there you are! or "I forgot about you!"........I would love to see the look on somebodys face if they caught me doing that!
What's blooming for us in Canada?
Love those Tarda tulips. They multiply very well in Winnipeg. I have tons of seedlings now too, as I always let them go to seed.
Inanda
I think they paint the pots different colours througout the year too, Steve. Last Christmas they had sleds as the main centre-piece. But, of course, these pots are big enough for this sort of thing.
Who knows, we may have passed each other there:)
Maybe we have passed each other there, that would be pretty neat.
I like the idea of changing the colour of the pots through out the year.
They're such unique plantings!
Steve
I have some little yellow tulips - a type of Tarda tulip, I think. I have them all over the yard and have had them since I bought them over 30 years ago. Many of mine have also developed seed. It takes a few years, but eventually they become mature enough to bloom.
I have some pics of that and other tulips and the fritillaria, but I need to edit them on the other computer. New one is not yet set up with software which I like.
Ann
Great! I look forward to seeing your pictures Ann!
Steve
Your garden looks very good Ann. Nice photos. And what a good idea.....instead of uploading a ton of different photos, just put them together into one! I have Picasa also, so I'll have to do that next time.
Steve
Picasa is a wonderful free tool for managing pictures.

That Emper Lily is assum, arnt thay suppose to stink.
Havent tried to grow them yet, mmmmm might give them a try this year.Nice daffs as will
I cant belive how fast things are growing, with the warm wearther we have you can almost see them growing,Three days ago i couldn't see
my lilys now thay are about 2inches high. And my bleeding hearths are realy big thay usualy arent this hi this time of year.
You're right ddirt, things are growing very fast - everything's greening up nicely. Last year this week I saw the first nubs of growth on my Clematis Polish Spirit - there's 6-10" growth on it already. And my siberian irises are 2-3" high already. But my hostas aren't up yet!!! Neither is my toad lily....and a few others in that "black mass" that eats up plants on the north side of my house ... sigh....
Christine
My poppies seem to get bigger each day and the plants in my coldframe are coming really fast too!!! My one bleeding heart that I moved cause it was dying where it was, was growing good but now looks like it's starting to dry up. I guess I should water it more. The white one beside it is growing really well though.
Steve
ddirt - don't remember whether you were reading above when I mentioned that I've had that Fritillaria for probably 10 years and this is the first time it's ever bloomed. LOL I thought it never would.
Ann
Never though about my clematis, checked wow what growth on it ceedub have you ever tryed tomato fertlizer on your clematis, i did last year and you would not belive the growth it put on,what do you use on yours.Steve my poppys are doing good as will better the most years, thay my flower this year,i have had my poppies for three years thay grow like the dickens but never flower must be like you checkered lilys ann, and i think thay just might do it this year, fingers crossed. And i did find my hosta thay have started to show ,but i find hosta slow anyway do you ceedub.

Ddirt, I gave the clematis some lime last fall, and early this spring I gave them Miracle Grow (still frozen ground). Now that its all thawed, I'm going to try rose food though as I've heard they really like it (and I don't have a rose any more so it'll just waste otherwise!). But once that's gone, I'll definitely try the tomato food. One of my clematis barely came back last year (10 flowers compared to many dozens the year before). The one that's not coming back yet this year (C.Terniflora) was just planted last spring; boy does that make me unhappy.
As for hostas, I've never grown them before, but everyone kept telling my that my north garden bed should have them, so I put three in last year. I'll be patient....even tho it's hard....lol.
What is up in the garden is growing by leaps and bounds every day though!!
Christine
Good luck with your hosta and clematis ceedub.Know what you mean about being peved off when something dozent come back
i have a smoke tree the purple one and it has a hard time of it every winter, how ever my wife bought a white one for herself and its growing like crazy its driving me crazy.
Looking at that photo after I posted it made me realize how much everything's grown since I took it. In the bottom left corner of the photo you can also see my baby Stella D'Oro :) hehe
Steve
Thanks Christine! That whole little twig of a bush is now leafed out and covered with flowers. I wish I could take another pic, but the camera needs to be recharged :( And I don't have the recharger cause it's my BIL's camera.
Steve
Nice lookin bush you have there Steve, When you viset your friend again get a piece for me.I didn't know you could grow them from cuttings.
It was (I think) what is called a 'basil cutting' from the base of the plant. It only had a bit of woody root so I kept it in a shady place till it rooted more and then I moved it to where it is now. Sadly my neighbor passed away, so I won't be able to get any more cuttings :(
Steve
Way to go, Steve! How hardy is it?
:) Donna
Oh will i will have to stay on your good side ,for a fue years them maybe i could get a cutting off yours lol.
I took a cutting off a golden chain tree this spring and its starting to leaf out, maybe just maybe its rooting.Oh i hope so if it wasn't going to make it you would think that it wouldn't do this what do you think Steve.

Digging - The same thing happened to us with dogwood and sumac. I just keep them moist and don't let them dry out. Should I pick the flower buds off the dogwood?
Donna - Flowering Almond is hardy to zone 3a. Here's the link to it in PlantFiles http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/65085/index.html . It seems to be a fairly speedy grower too.
Steve
SW-gardener, I saw the most gorgeous flowering almond in the bed behind my bank. In full bloom last week, and a real knock-out! I lost several plants this past winter, CEE, so I know how it feels, too. Three mainstay plants in the new border died (the baby's breath was because the dog dug it up FOUR times!) The new Floribunda rose died, and a pretty yellow member of the chrysanthemum family, with yellow daisy like flowers.Always in full bloom all last summer. All in one end of the border, so it really looks lame this spring!
All the daffodils, grape hyacinths, crocus, scilla have or still are blooming, so I have had lots to enjoy. The apple tree blossoms are just now beginning to open. Solomon's Seal and Lilies of the Valley are next. Last night the cold killed the marigolds I had planted out. Guess I better wait to put more out there! BAM
Donna my flowering almond survived the last 3 horrible winters here........it should do very well for you.
I keep checking this thread and everyone's yard is doing wonderfully! Now I've got to get my camera dusted off and take a few pics of mine.
My scilla are long gone :( I had a white selfsown seedling come up this year, so that was exciting. But the flower wasn't very strong and got destroyed in the rain. The lily of the valley in our back garden doubled in size this past year so we have tons of that. I think I got a picture of the tulips(which lasted a total of maybe 5 days cause of the warm weather) before the camera died...
Steve
wow nice link Steve now im going to have to get one thay are very nice looking. And my scilla are almost gone to , doze anyone think that the tulips are slow this year.
Our tulips seem to be right on time here. We've got a nice clump of late May blooming ones that came from who knows where, but they always make a nice show, lasting a long time and the clump must have doubled in size from last year!
Steve
will mine seems slow ,or maybe its me ,to eager to see them.
Most of our tulips are gone already. They came and went so fast.
And last night my neices and nephew were over and busted a flower off a yellow triumph :(
Steve
Well, as of three days ago...my Rosa Pteracantha is in bloom, as is "Therese Bugnet", Rosa Californica "Plena". and many clematis are covering my arbors........the Montanas, pink and white, and magenta! Having been away for two weeks, the lushness and flowers of the perennials, hardy geraniums, etc is phenomenal!! Elaine
Roselaine - Do you have any pics of your garden? I would love to see it!
I just can't get over the lushness of everything either, and we're supposed to get rain for the next five days almost, so I'm looking forward to going out after and seeing how much everything has grown!
Steve
Steve you are getting rain,we are getting sun.Your temps night time are not good it might be 10 to 14 in the day time night time i have to wear my winter coat, this morning everything was covered with frost and with out a doubt the next fue days it will change have to take my annnuals in at night.thats a bummer takes about a hour and a half to take all my plants in .my green house isnt heated ,but it will be next year .With all that walking to bring them in and then out in the moring who needs a stair master lol.
today it's supposed to be raining, but it's sunny and a high of 23! It's supposed to rain for the next 10 days and be in the 10's and teens. I'm going to try not to peak in my coldframe during the rainy weather so I can go out after and see how much everything has grown.
It also looks like my Jack-in-the-Pulpit might be MIA, but I just discovered 6 babies he left behind!!! YAY!
Steve
Steve........I'll take some shots tomorrow...............E
Rain for ten days i will send you a arc, now its for plants only lol.not peak ohhhhhhh i wouldn't be able to do that.
Are jack-in-the-pulpits biannual or is it like hens-and chicks when the mother flowers it dies because a friend of mine had the same thing happen.
PS When you load the arc with plants ,make sure it is by twos, one for you and one for me ha,ha
