The roadside nursery

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

It's common here to occupy - illegally of course - open footpaths for myriad things. As they need pay no tax or rent. Just a bit of being in 'good books' with the authorities will work. :( This is one of the nurseries that have come up on one of the vast open space by the roadside. He seems to be doing good business as he has been there for 2-3 months now and I see colourful plants in bloom being sold/on show. Have not yet ventured to buy there, yet. I am going slow on new plants of late. We had stopped by to buy some cucumbers from another roadside seller (just out of picture on the left bottom). This place is about 5 minutes walk from our house. Opposite this is the school where I studied.

Wow, we have plenty of roadside vendors here too, but not usually on that large of a scale. Lots of produce is sold like that. I bought some azaleas from a roadside vendor who traveled up from further south. That was a mistake as they were not cold hardy here. I lost several of them the first winter.
We also have charitable groups that sell different things to raise money for a needy cause.
There's one man, who sells Stanley products from his care. He pulls out a folding card table and a large umbrella and sits and waits. Stanley products are household cleaning products.
Since we have a lot of hikers here, I have seen folks selling handmade walking sticks, usually carved a bit fancifully.
When we have peaches come into season, we see a lot of vendors there. We also have a small "farmer's market" set up a couple days of week. It's also referred to as a "tailgate market" meaning the back door of a pick-up truck is lowered (the tailgate) and produce and flowers are sold there.

That's interesting. Aah, those things happen there too? There are lots of such vendors, mostly on pushcarts. It is an everyday affair having no 'season' as such. It is their livelihood, though not legal. But some get licences from the Corporation by paying a stipulated sum.

OMG...... we both have the same culture........ our maximum nurseries are on the road side and maximum are also illegal, but who care?????? Government ...people.....? ???? No body take interest , every one want to buy plants. Interesting thing is this they have legal water connections.....LOL

Kaleem, I forgot to tell that they get water from nearby public taps. They first see its availability and then decide their spot for camp. If they make it legal, then people run away!! They bring them in round plastic pots, sometimes they use a bicycle and tie two each and hang them on the bar. They can carry four this way.

Your people are wonderful, what a nice Idea of bicycle .....that will be so loving............

You know, Kaleem, the bicycle is probably the most handiest of items. It can carry all sort of things. Iron bars, heavy bags (kept in between the space below the front bar)..and whatnot. You can carry it in case of taking short-cuts when the pedals obstruct the passage! Will try to take pictures in the market place how the bicycle is handy. My favourite too is this lovely two-wheeler. I have one, presently a Robin Hood of 1957 model. (England). I have my g-father's also (now kept idle-- it was from 1914, probably a marriage gift). It's a Sunbeam.

I wish Americans would use bicycles and public transportation more. I used the busses and subways in NY and Boston when I was a kid. You can chat and read and even eat a simple meal while riding (not sure food is allowed now).
I never learned to ride a bike; a loss I am still aware of at 62.

Woodspirit1, It's never too late to learn and riding a bike is fun! All you have to do is balance. Please try it.

billy, my bones are too brittle to try that but I sure can rollerskate!

Moab, UT(Zone 6b)

Dinu, we have not the nursery type plants next to the road here, but many different folks will park their truck with fruit or vegetables - as long as they are not a hazard they are not bothered. Some get permission from an owner to park on his lot.

It is interesting to see that people are mostly the same every where on this earth... it is the governments that are different. People just want to live with their families and loved ones in a peaceful manner. We just want to grow our food and flowers and share them or trade them for what we didn't grow and someone else did.

Smiling here this lovely sunny morning. ~Blooms

Blooms, that was a very short, excellent description of how it really is...

I love the way DG brings us all together. :)

Oh yes indeed.

Dinu, what is the Corporation to which you refer?

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

It is the Municipality. It will be called as a Corporation once the city reaches a particular population. I think it was 500 thousand. Now we have about a million. (also called as 10,00,000 or ten lakhs -- note the use of comma for lakhs). It is the body that administers the activities of the city.
