Had been to one of the branches of the Post Office yesterday. Just thought of where all the 'snail mails' are mailed. It's is still an old cylindrical one. But the newer, cuboid ones are erected on a little pillar. This gives a heritage look. The above link could be useful in knowing more about this one of the oldest departments in our country. This particular PO is housed in an oldish building, a rather unplanned one. They might have taken it on rent.

Post Box
That's cute, Dinu. Made me chuckle. :) Some of our old things are fun to see, aren't they?
A couple of questions for you Dinu - oh, and by the way, I meant to dmail or post for your birthday but forgot. I hope you had a truly blessed day! Are birthdays a big thing in India? We celebrate here with a birthday cake, icecream, candles, cards, gifts, etc. The number of candles matches the number of years of age but once you're an adult, that can change. :) Some people throw a huge party or go out for dinner, something to mark the day as a special day for the birthday person.
My brother adopted a Korean child and learned that all Korean people become one year older on Jan. 1st. No matter what the actual day of your birth is, you are 1 when you are born. Then on the next Jan. 1st, you become 2. So their son was born the first week of December and then 3 weeks later, he was 2! Quite an interesting way to determine age. When his paperwork was all cleared and he arrived here in the States in August, he went back to being 9 months old. :)
Young ladies from Cambodia that my parent's sponsered were so surprised when Mom baked one of them a cake, they couldn't understand what it was for. Their English was limited and it took some explaining but they smiled from ear to ear when they understood.
...
On the link to the post office site, I was curious who the famous person is that the new stamp is honouring. Is it a government official?
And in the picture you posted, is the lady a customer? All the post offices I have been in here have a long counter separating the customer area from the work area. Customers cannot go past the long counter and the postal worker has a specific spot behind the counter where they stand to serve you. Do you have mail delivery to your house or must you go to a post office building to collect your mail?
Good info Kooger! Jo...another inquiring mind!
Kooger,
Thanks for the wishes. As it is, my birthday passes off without fuss. Just a sweet dish my DW prepares, a couple of good wishes and a few calls from my old classmates (who know each other since the kindergarten days!!)... otherwise, it is just another day. But nowadays, I add to the list my DG-friends. Earlier our parents used to get new set of clothes for the occasion, but yes you are right, with age, the 'fuss' diminishes and wanes off.
Interesting info. on Korea's birthdays. Didn't know it in my regime as Radio Korea International's official monitor for 16 years. I don't know how this escaped my attention!
The Post Office: Stamp - he must be someone who has contributed much to society thorugh his intellect. I have no idea precisely. They honour such persons that have done really much.
Yes, the lady 'inside' the post office is a customer, obviously discussing something with the Post Master. The POs here are getting modernized slowly, at snail's pace. Many smaller branch offices are functioning in the old ways. She must be discussing some doubts there. There is a board "No Admission Without Permission". So we normally don't go in if there is something that cannot be discussed over the counter.
The mails are delilvered at the door. We have a slit in the mesh for the postman (now a woman is on duty for our area) to put mails IN. We don't have a dog and so this system works. People that have dogs have boxes fitted to the gate where they can deposit the mail.

Thanks Dinu and Janet. I didn't think to google. :) So he is a Tamil nationalist. Interesting. I need to do some reading, I think. I know there's been a lot of bloodshed for Tamil nationalism on the island of ???(my brain just drew a blank) but I didn't know abt anyTamil people in India. If you have time and would like to do so, could you tell us about the major different groups that make up your country? I've mainly heard abt the Sikhs, because of the violence in those areas and so many emmigrating to Canada. Vancouver and Toronto (and probably other cities) have large Sikh populations. I know, I can google, but it is so much more interesting to hear from you as it is your country. :)
