I'm hoping for the "ton of blooms", though I've read that occasionally the buds can abort.
Yes, I'm watching my stems very closely and documenting everything I can think of.
Here is the thickened stem at 1 inch
Very thick stems
Mary, I didn't want to mention that sad fact. About ¼ of my buds aborted on my stems a couple years ago, it was still quite a show!
That stem is also starting to curve so I might end up with something really squirrely. Oh well, in the interest of science, it will be fun either way. :)
Very funky
I used to have a painted daisy that always made oval flowers like that every year! I never knew why though.

Lincolnitess - Have you asked a master gardener or taken a stem into a local nursery to get an opinion as to what is causing the deformity? The reason I ask is because I've seen pictures of coneflowers with Yellow Aster Virus and it causes petals to grow from the center (eye) of the flower. I would be concerned that there is something very wrong with that plant.
The stem does look fasciated. It's hard to see in the photo, but it is about twice as wide in one direction and flattened. Only the stem that is growing the strange flowers. Fasciated blooms do look odd.

Ok, this explains it more now....My plant probably was just diseased.
It was nice to think for a minute though that I had something special :D
