Two years ago I planted some tulip bulbs in a nice row in one area of my yard. This spring I have tulips coming up in areas of the yard far removed from the first planting. I was of the understanding that tulips grow from bulbs. Do they also grow from seeds???? How are these growing in areas far removed from the orig. planting area?
Tulips?
Tuli[ps do grow from seed but take several years to flower. Bulbs cam move for a number of reasons, two main reasons are; by animals, either shifting the bulbs when they are burrowing or by digging them up and then moving them or; when digging or tilling borders.
I'm sure others will come up with other possibilities, those are just two we tend to find here.
The major factor we have found are squirrels..for some reason they have not bothered a variety of purple tulips (Kansas State color!), but all the others have ceased to exist in any number, but random puny tulips show up in the vegetable garden beds, the compost.,,even flower pots. I tend to call the squirrels "furry tailed rats! There are other factors, but I believe in my assessment about the squirrels in our scenerio.
Skunks will also dig up bulbs and transport them. I'm not sure why they dig them up and just move them. You would think if they went through all that work, they would be after something that they would eat.
