Coffee and...For Wednesday, April 5, 2006 =^..^=
Good morning everyone. Up early, coughing and arms hurting. Have taken cough medicine, and a pain pill for the arms, so I guess I will start the day in a "drug fog". Slept well the time I was in bed, but that was only about 4 1/2 hours.
Kittymom, yeah Snowcone looks like he would keep the squirrels away. Just like my patches, she would probably end up inviting them to come home with her for a party!! About the id, yes I did have dianthus in that bed, I will go back and look at some pictures and see if that is what it is. I am not going to pull it up, until I know, as last year, I found out, I pulled up all kinds of black eyed susans!!
Since this is grocery shopping day, I think I will get ready and go before there are too many people out and about.
Will check in later.
Good morning,
Susan - tell us more about armadillos. They seem a might exotic to those of us in the north.
eweed - I must have missed something about the boat. Was it in yesterday's thread? (Or if, not, tell us more.)
Bonnie, stay bundled up and look after yourself. Hope you feel better soon.
Well, off to breakfast, aquafit and then the food cupboard for my volunteer stint. Also, this evening, another meeting of the church committee about spending all that money.
I'll probably get back here late afternoon.
hope you all have a good day.
Ann
Morning everyone - talk about a fog- I am in one wallowing around. I didn't sleep well last night and this morning fell into a deep deep sleep. Then I awoke with a start - real disorientated - stumbled to the bathroom and just sat there! This is real out of the ordinary for me!!
I have a wild day today. Meeting at 9am with the investment guy (again...), lunch the other side of town at 12:30 (so no time to go home between), then to DIL house at 5 for a trip back downtown for two workout classes (oh I will be lame tomorrow!) I'm tired just thinking about it!!
defoe- hope you get on the mend soon - it's crummy to feel bad this time of the year! How true about someone else doing your grocery shopping. When I send DH, he never seems to be able to find the things I want - and of course won't ask. I usually have lots of extras on hand, so he seldom has to do the chore.
bal - at least you got $$ back, We've had to pay for years and I hate it...this year it's around $500 and it makes me just sick to think what I could spend that $ on!! Oh well, pay now or pay later - I guess. My tax person tells me the problem is that we aren't in debt!!
Speaking of that plant growing defoe- my vote would be weed! I had one similar and was thrilled that 'it' made it thru the winter and it looked so healthy. I let it grow and it ended up almost 5 feet tall with a little tiny white bloom on it. It seems to return yearly - must have a deep tap root! I'm not fooled by it anymore tho. Last year, a brother grew too!
I lugged the majority of my plants inside - they are sitting by the slider window. The rest were covered with a blanket in the greenhouse. Now I need to boogie out there and uncover them so they don't cook when the sun comes up. I really think I don't save a dime doing all this, but I get joy out of growing things and that is priceless!
Off to greet the world!

Good Morning everyone,
Ann, Sarv and defoe, yes you must have missed Ernie's photos of the ship being built at the shipyard where he works but it wa quite a while ago when he showed the unfinished ferry.
And you, Ernie, yahoo, you finally made it here once more we missed you
Ernie!! We thought you abandoned us! Realizing that some people have a busy life, but we wondered where you had flown off to.
Dcat, I dunno about that plant. It looks just like the little weeds we get every year and pull out every year and then they come back EVERY YEAR. It also shoots up a single little white flower. Have you posted it in identifiction? Sweet William doesn't stay green through our winters but it might down South. Hope you get lots of rest today and feel better quickly.
Sarv, this time change gets harder every year, I'm all foggy this morning too and had a hard time getting to sleep last night. Why are you doing two workouts in one day? Ice cream guilt? I'd be hard pressed to make it through one.
It's more trouble than it's worth to send DH for groceries...takes longer to write the list than to go myself. Tuna. Albacore. Chicken of the Sea. Packed in water. 7 oz. can. Use the coupon. T paper. Northeren. Quilted. Double Roll. 12 pack if they have it. Use the coupon. Sigh. I'm doomed to push a cart forever.
Snowcone looks pretty ferocious to me, Susan, but then I'm not a squirrel. My cats are useless, won't even terrorize a mouse. They think I should do it. Haven't seen any this winter, not even in the sticky traps in the garages. But it's been a mild winter, so they haven't been driven in by the cold.
Elaine, if you go to Sams you can get red chili flakes in a big container, and you can either boil it in a big pot of hot water, or use the blender and add the powder to hot water, and strain it through a coffee filter. You can make a hot pepper spray that will go a lot further than the dry pepper, and spray where you need it. Wear gloves or wash your hands, don't touch your face....or have DH do it.
don't touch your face. And of course don't spray into the wind! I know that sounds like a lot of work, but it is effective and lots cheaper.
Aaaack, I've had to take money out of my 401K too, Robert. In fact I think I have to take the rest of it out this spring and stick it into something else. Probably an annuity that will spread out the tax pain so it doesn't hit us all at once. It would have been better to wait until DH retires next year, so he will have less income. It's taxed as ordinary income and our current bracket is fairly high. But there's no choice, out it comes.
Having lunch with DD today, and have a hair cut scheduled. Just a trim really, but I don't dare hack at it myself. Lots of other little things that need doing, in spite of the fact that I killed the laundry monster yesterday and vacuumed a high volume of cat hair....Puttin some ribs in the slowcooker for dinner so I don't have to keep an eye on them all day. Might even cheat and use some bottled sauce, instead of making my own.
GG, is the roof all done? I know what you mean about spring snow up there, we had snow for our Senior Prom in early May. Galoshes go nicely with long formal dresses. You've been busy too, which is good on the financial end but sure cuts into your DG visiting time.
ViAnn, I hope your ISP can help with the slow response, that's pretty unusual for high speed. My laptop is considerably slower than the big computers, for reasons that I probably couldn't understand even if they were explained to me. We leave our on all the time, except when there's thunderstorms, then everything goes off.
I'd better get moving, ~~ to everyone, have a great day, I'll drop back in later to catch up!
Sheila
As you can see he has been building ships!!
Morning everyone
Feeling much better today. Have been trying to get back on some sort of a schedule since this time change. Gets me in a funk every time. LOL
Meezers, thank you thank you for mentioning the hair cut. got to remember to call and make an appointment for myself on Sat. I'm getting very shaggy. :)
Defoe, wish I were close enough to do your shopping for you so you could stay home. The DH and I make quite a pair. :) He's actually pretty good for a guy. ;) In fact, sometimes he drives me bananas when we shop. I just want to scream and say ... "just put one in the buggy and lets go, please!" Usually though, shopping is fun and I don't mind it too much.
Hi Ernie~ ... great to see you back! Looks like you've *really* been busy.
Ann, I just leave my computer on, also, all the time unless bad weather threatens. I do a cold start once a month at least to check all my systems.
It's a bit cooler here again this morning ... in the 50's again. I keep going out and gazing at all my plants. I have several things I'll have to have ID'd as I got impatient and started planting seeds without knowing what they were first! :) I'm still just so amazed by it all. I squat there in front of all my little pots and marvel at a God that can turn a seed into a beautiful plant.
To everyone ... I'm waving and wishing you a wonderful day. ~~~
Elaine
It's snowing like crazy here. Hope it doesn't start to stick to anything.
Have to go into a meeting in a few minutes, so will be back later.
aaakkkkk snow!
snowing here too but that's April for you!!
Here as well. My Spring Glories are covered over.
April here - this year! We are never sure just what will bloom when around here. I know you more northerly folks are adjusted, but I got blown away one year when I got up and saw SNOW on my yard on April 4th!!! Right now it is just about as perfect as you could ask for - so I'm outta here and out there!
Hugs, best wishes, and love to all - ginni
Afternoon - just got back - been gone since 8:45 this morning!! Investment guy tried to talk me into investing more with him - humph - why should I when he charges 5.75% of MY money...I'm not as dumb as he thinks!! Since I've already paid for the stuff he has (when I was not smart..), I might as well pick his brain - that's what todays visit was..
Then I went to Kohl's (sale starts tomorrow...) tried on some stuff and got grossed out looking at the rolls.. Next on to Bed, Bath, andB - spend a whole $2 there, then onto my garden store. Bought a bunch of seeds- drat - weren't on sale - that was last week!!
Met my cousin's wife for lunch and a long chat - she wants to plan a trip on amtrak along the north states, down thru California, and back the southern states. I don't think I will bite at that! Gone too long - I like her, but a month with her would be tooo much!!
M5- I am taking two classes with my DIL because SHE wants me to - not because I want to!! LOL The first will be just walking - the second is 45 min with a ball....should be an experience!! Since I had ice cream 2x yesterday, I need to double up today!! Not looking forward to it tho.
The sun has been shining all day and the greenhouse is shut up tight. I have the majority of plants inside again, but still have one shelf full out there. I need to go open the window/door and let some cool air in. Bet it is over 100 in there!! If they don't freeze, they cook.
Hello again everyone.
Ernie, It's nice to see you again. Thanks for posting the new pictures of the ferry. It is looking good. When is the launching scheduled? When is the ferry scheduled to be in service? What is your job at the shipyard? It must be looking like spring up your way, I saw pictures of the Skagit Valley tulip festival on TV this morning. Of course they mispronounced Skagit as "Skag it" instead of making the g sound like the one in refrigerator.
A beautiful flower, Ginni, I'm guessing at what it might be. I'm not too familiar with what grows in the south but I'm pretty sure you can grow azaleas.
Dcat, I would also suspect a weed, partly because the plant is so healthy looking! Last year I had a mystery plant that grew like, well, a bad weed, and when it started making seed heads with a large amount of seed, I decided not to take any chances, cut it down, wrapped it in plastic and let it bake in the sun until it was dry, then cut it up and put it into the burn barrel. Even though I had posted it on the ID forum, nobody identified it, and that made me even more sure that it was a weed. This year I will be watching to see if another one comes up.
No snow here so far today, but it could turn to snow instead of this light, intermittent, rain. One year we had a genuine blizzard on April 12, so you see it is not out of the question. Ironically, it came on the final day that studded tires were legal that year, and some people drove home in the blizzard right after having their tires changed to the summer variety. Needless to say, the ones that went into the ditch and had to be towed out were not happy about it.
Today I've been sitting around with the heating pad on my back, trying to keep it relaxed so the stronger muscles don't pull my back out of line again. It's probably a good thing that the weather isn't nice or I would be tempted to do something I shouldn't be doing.
This morning I noticed a couple of tiny miniature daffodills that will probably bloom soon. A couple of years ago I got some bargain bulbs and was pleasantly surprised at those cute little guys.
I'm going to take a walk between showers, then it's back to the heating pad for another session.
Mary, I expect you're right. Any plant that grows that enthusiastically this early in the season is most likely a weed. I have a few that fit the description of a fast grower with a small white flower each year. I always watch them for awhile until I decide they've grown way too fast.
Good luck with the sore back.
Ann
Ann and those who asked about the Mantis tiller I must confess that the weather has been so bad that I have not had a chance to do much with it. I can say that it rips branches off loved shrubs when you don't know what you are doing! When we were trying to decide between a Mantis or a Troy Bilt the consensus on other forums here at DG was the Mantis. Mine is a 4 stroke and it is quite quiet and is suppose to be easier to start. We will see on the starting I don't have much arm strength since hurting my shoulder a few years ago.
Mary take it easy so that when spring really hits you will be ready to go. I have some of those mini daffs and just love them. Right now I am trying to remember where I planted them.
It is trying to snow here but temps are not to be as cold as last night. We had a low of 21* and I got up at 3:30 am to go turn the heater up to med. in the gh. It was 41* inside but didn't want to lose my maters and coleus and that brought it up to 48* when I got up.
D'cat, just want to thank you for the cold I feel like I am coming down with, the first one this winter. Must be we had some serious south west winds a few days ago and your germs came this way. I can handle it but please, don't give them to my dh, way too much work when he is sick.
Have a great evening and keep looking for spring.
Joy
Out and about and finally home. Hairdresser cut off more than I wanted but they always do. It'll grow. She only charged me for a trim though.
I think we have a concensus that it's a weed, Dcat , if it grows that well that early! I find similar ones popping up all over as they are persistant.
Did all my running around, had lunch at Olive Garden w/ DD, and had the soup and salad. We stopped at Linens and Things, and I spent $3, so Sarv and I are the budget shoppers today.
Took out frozen lasagna for dinnerand it's thawing in the microwave. Bread sticks and salad and that will do. Thought I was good on bills but got the utility bill, the cable, and dentist, so that's got to be done tomorrow a.m. And none can be paid quickly on line, have to sit and write checks.
Have a couple of phone calls to make so I'm outa here again. Warmed up nicely today, do not send S**w up here.
Sheila
Whoa, where is everybody? Meezer, you sure you don't want to share any of this snow? Actually most of it has melted off already, but my freshly tilled garden area is still white.
Pretty flower, tgif, whatever it is! Care to enlighten us?
Hi Ernie, nice to "see" you here again. That ship looks a whole lot better now than it did the first time you showed it to us.
Bonnie, hope you're feeling better by now and that the grocery shopping didn't cause a relapse! Sending someone else to do it usually doesn't work out all that well for anyone, it seems. I still think that the worst happens when the husbands do the shopping though.
Sarv, here's wishing you a much better and more restful night tonight. Hope the double-dose of exercise went well. I try to do half an hour in the morning, at least on work days, but am afraid that I need a whole lot more than that just to avoid packing on more unneeded pounds.
Maria and suzieq, has the snow melted in your areas yet? I haven't had a chance to see what damage it might have done to the few flowers that had started to bloom out in front of the house --- will have to check tomorrow morning.
Joyous, hope the Mantis works out well for you. I really do like mine except for the lousy pull-start. If I had the money, I'd sell the one I have and buy the electric version. I can't fault it once it starts though. It's managed my rough and rocky garden area that broke two or three belts on my neighbor's big tiller.
Mary, hope your back stays in the shape it's meant to be. Does the endurance riding bother it at all?
101, I keep staring at the tiny seedlings that are growing under the lights upstairs. They're nowhere near as big as the ones you have, but I keep trying to cheer them on. I want to see some real leaves so I can pot them up and move some to the cold frame and some to the greenhouse once it's regularly above freezing at night. Maybe some chicken wire could be used to keep the squirrels out of your pots. My DH built a round frame of the stuff a couple of years ago to keep critters away from my strawberry pot.
I've about run out of steam for today, so I'll just wave ~~~~~~ to everyone, including all the new people and the regulars who haven't looked in today. Goodnight all.
Joyous, sorry to hear about the cold coming on. Hope it is short lived. I think the prescribed treatment was Vicks on the soles of your feet when you go to bed. Don't remember whether you were supposed to wear socks too as I didn't have any Vicks around at the time. I'm sure someone else can enlighten us.
Hope you get a chance to do more with the tiller soon.
Inspired by another thread, I've "planted" a bunch of Hosta seeds on damp paper towels and sealed them in plastic bags. Will try to get more seeds started tomorrow.
Second meeting of the committee to spend money tonight. We meet again next Monday to finalize the first report to church council on the Tuesday after Easter. But mostly, it was the only day we could all get together again before the end of the month. Easter is a 4 day holiday in Canada. Good Friday is a Statutory holiday and Easter Monday is a semi holiday - no banks, mail or government offices open. Schools closed too. So MANY people travel at Easter.
Must go. Have a number of things to do before bed. Tomorrow will be busy with aquafit, kindermusik and handbells.
Hi to all who I've not personally addressed.
Hope everyone sleeps well.
Ann
McCool, don't send any snow here. We had enough yesterday before sending on to you.
Ann
Sorry, I haven't checked in again today. Went to grocery/walmart, etc, and since my arms/back was hurting, decided to stop by chiropractor's and get an adjustment. Well, by about 4:00 this afternoon, I was in tears, with the arms hurting. Have taken muscle relaxers, anti inflamatories,. and pain med. Not supposed to take the pain med but every 6 hours, and I suffer about an hour and 1/2 before it's time. DH wanted me to go to the emergency room tonight, but if I can get through the night, I am going somewhere bright and early in the morning.
Not gonna comment, but will be back, if I can't sleep, or if I am up during the night.l
Hi everyone, I just popped in and I see a magnificant boat, I'm sorry to hear a lot of you don't feel good and Tgif, you're picture was definately worth it!
Defoecat, I'm so sorry you're hurting. I hope it's better soon.

Hi All,
Popping in again to see how things are going. Keep the snow those of you that have it!
Well, the roof on the Salon is completely done,,,only bad thing is, it looks so nice compared to the house, we want to do the house right away and we just can't afford it,,,,so, we'll have to be two toned for awhile. I am looking into a grant though and will see if that will come through. Haven't even read the paper work yet.
From how I understood the lady I spoke with on the phone, I would get the money for a new roof. After 3 years 25% of the debt would be completely forgiven and the other 75% wouldn't need to be paid back until I sold or vacated the house. I asked what the interest rate would be,,,,she said 0,,,I thought,,,,sign me up!!!!! LOL Sounds like a good program,,,but have to read all the fine print.
Bill is driving me absolutely nuts being home all the time,,,,If I hear I'm bored one more time,,,,grrrrr, CLEAN you Fool!!!!! I'm sure Dr. Shrink will be happy to hear it when I see him Tues. I'm thinkin' pretty soon he's going to ask me if anything really good ever happens in my life,,,LOL It does,,,,I blame it all on Bill,,,it's always him that things happen to,,,hey, it works for me for now,,,LOL
Marie and I are trying to get a hosta co-op going. We are going to meet on Sat the 15th with the owner of the place we want to work with. I sure hope we can work it out. Call me crazy,,,but I love a challenge and this is going to prove to be a big one. LOL
Well, hope everyone's day's are better now that spring is in the air.
Kelly
Hi all
Well I've been busy today but as I look around I'm not sure with what! I washed a load of clothes and promptly forgot them. Yep ... I'm waiting on them now to finish. grrrr don't you just *hate* it when you do that?
Kelly, how bout sendin Bill on down here. I'll sure be glad to keep him from gettin bored! LOL My house needs a new roof something fierce. There's a little spot beginning to form on the kitchen ceiling, so my typing money will be used for a good purpose. :)
Defoe, Gosh, I'm so sorry it went down hill after we talked today. Please do take care of yourself and let me know how you are tomorrow. Will be praying you're better in the morning.
Ernie~ that must be *some* boat!! LOL Can't imagine being able to do that. We have some talented guys in our group!! Please do share some more pics, okay?
Ann, thanks for the Email! :)
To those of you with snow ... I'm so so sorry. Just can't imagine that. I'm sitting here even now with my back door open even at this hour.
McCool, I have so many pots of all sorts of things sprouting. The only problem is ... I've been terribly neglegent in the labeling department. Now that was the *first* thing I read ... be *sure* to label. Yeah yeah ... I didn't learn that lesson too good. So y'all keep a look out for me in the ID forum. I'll be there before too long. :)
Well, to those I've missed ... hello and hope you've have a good day. It's getting late, so think I'll go catch some Z's I hope Darius is comfy where ever she is tonight.
Nighty night.
... Elaine
Elaine,
Wish I could,,,but had a hard enough time convincing him to do ours alone to save money,,,,he HATES roofing,,,always has. When he owned his carpentry business, he just cringed everytime he had to do a roof. I think I have him convinced that he can do ours in sections so we don't have to pay anyone else. I hope.
New Roof equals Lots of typing,,,LOL
Kelly
Today was WalMart day. Oh boy. BUT they have all the plants in and I am going crazy wanting to get them. Couldn't do it today because it is regular store day and there wouldn't have been room in the car. Besides I want to go by myself and DH is still going on the Wednesday trip. I can get much more carried away alone. LOL
I am also excited by thoughts of the hosta coop. Not that I haven't been really bad this spring already and ordered way too many. But as mine come up, I want more, more, more. It really is a disease. ROFLOL
I am so sorry to hear you are hurting again Defoe. Did the chiro do something to make you hurt like that? Sheesh. I have been negligent in doing my exercises, always doing something else and putting them off and then it's too late and well.....you know.
I have PT tomorrow. will be my first in a week. NOT looking forward to it. Hope I am not in too much of a set back.
Elaine, I don't see how you keep your sprouts straight. I have trouble and I can actually 'see' them. LOL
I have my morning glory seeds all in their little bottles to soak. Haven't put the water in them yet. I have 33 different kinds, most of them Japanese MG's that I can't pronounce the names. Have no idea what color they will be. Got all of them from DG people, the greatest in the world.
Be on the lookout in seed trading because I am going to list all the seeds I can't possibly use,. I will need to do it soon because they need to be planted. There will be oodles of them. I do NOT want to trade just to share. I don't want them to go to waste which they will.
We are hot. Well, it was just 84 today, but it is still 73 and I am leaving my windows open tonight. Gonna listen to the frogs singing, I love that. Always hate when it really gets hot and I have to close them and turn on the a/c.
The daily is up at
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/589251/
Sure hope everyone has a good night.
Susan
=^..^=
Kelly
LOL Now just pray I get some more of that typing, will ya? The last guy pled ... dirty rat probly knew he was guilty! LOL hehehe Good thing I just do the typing :)
Susan ... better do those exercises girl! Yeah, I know what you mean ... I could probably do better about the labeling thing if I could *just* pronounce the *names* LOL Before DG I thought a Patunia was ... well just a patunia or a azalia was just ... an azalia. Now people say what *kind* of cucumbers are you planting? My mouth drops open and I drool a little while I stumble to try and come up with a sophistocated answer. I mean ... I don't want to just say ... oh I want to grow some in a container that won't make the DH burp. *smile* So off to the forum to read and read and read! That's why I forget I have clothes in my wahsing machine to be thrown over. DG is gonna get me *in trouble* one of these days!!:)
... Elaine
