Here are a few more AVs that I don't think I have posted. This is Anika.
Jesse
Here are some more
beautiful!
Jesse your plants are so pretty ! Thanks for sharing. :))
Thanks. I'm a little depressed right now over my babies. Only 4 out of tons of leaves that I have put down have made any babies. I just don't know what I am doing wrong.
Jesse
Jesse looks to me like your doing every just perfect ! It just takes time. Some can show in 2-4 weeks some 2-4 months. But once they pop up watch out they grow fast ! Give them lots of warmth and light . I feed mine VF-11 too :))
Hey Jesse...it takes time for those babies to pop out. I found that my trailers popped out eariler than my others. But...I'm sure you are finding like the rest of us that it's great being a violet mom.
Hang in there :)
Deb
Yes, I really am enjoying it. But what I have noticed is that I like to keep mine trimmed down really small instead of letting them get great big and bushy. Of course my space babies are big and I like that. And some of the bigger varieties I will keep large. But since I'm not going to show them, I think they look prettier if you keep them small. They just look neater to me. This is one of my favorites and it looked bad when it was big but after I trimmed it down and repotted it, I just love it. I have shown you this one but here it is again. It is one of my favorites.
Jesse
Hi Jesse, beautiful plants!!!
When you say that you trimmed the plant, did you take leaves off as well or just cut the roots shorter? I like compact plants.
I took all of the leaves off except for a few. I also rinsed the dirt out of the roots. They were not very long at all. But if you compare the before and after photo of the same plant, I think the smaller one looks better. Does anyone know how to put two pictures side by side? What program would I need?
Jesse
Jesse, I also think that it looks better smaller.
Thanks Spider. I never knew that you could take the leaves off of an african violet. I could never imagine doing such a thing. When I started taking all the leaves off of some of mine it was like cutting my fingers off. It was so hard to do. Now I know that it makes it even prettier.
Jesse
Jesse, patience is a virtue, honest!
When I put some leaves from my noids down, one came up with babies so fast it was amazing, but all the rest are ever-so-slowly popping through, but they are on their way, so don't despair...
staring closely at them and sighing heavily might help - extra humidity, eh?
I had Allison and everyone on here to read about being patient, so I only went a little crazy waiting!
(I thought S. Wave was never going to do anything.)
Wow, that is amazing. Both of the Lyras that i put down gave babies the quickest. The other two were a little after that. But the others that I put down at the same time still show nothing. The reason I want some babies is because I want plants from others but I need to be able to trade. And all I got are these little things. Both Lorry and Allison sent me some nice plants but they are to small right now. I hate to ask others to send me stuff when I have nothing to give back.
Jesse
Just think of the fun they had sending them to you, knowing you didn't have many, and these were going to be a big thrill for you.
I still have quite a few of my leaves that don't show anything at all yet, but they look good, and Allison has taught me that if I look at them 300 times a day, it makes them shy, and they won't pop ears up!:)
+2Z nice babies :))
Strawberry Wave is a pretty plant !
They take time to grow . All are different. Most times from the time I put down a leaf until I can share and send a plant to someone is a good 6-9 months, if it comes big and blooming I've grown it for a good 12 months ! Lot's of care goes into growing African violet babies ! I love the joy of growing them and sharing them :))
Jessie some of your plants are Miniatures. Your Mini Papa is large enough to share and put down leaves .
It was in full bloom for you so you know you can share leaves from it :))
Just give them lots of light , 12-16 hours a day, some food food and watering, air circulation room to grow nothing touching, humidity , lots of love and they are fast growing plants in a month or two will all be blooming and ready to trade leaves. Always a good idea to put down leaves from all of your plants. Pne insurance if the plant does not make it and two for sharing and trading. I always grow extras to share :))
How are the leaves I sent you ?
Really it's good not to expect babies for 6-8 weeks.ut it can take longer 3-6 months just depending. Don't keep them too wet but don't ever let them dry out their fragile new baby roots will die and it will have to start all over. Don't worry they will come !
Jesse I just took a look at the list I sent you. Many are Minis or Semi-Miniature plants and other than more rows of leaves they will not get much larger and with good care will be blooming soon ! Get leaves down of all your plants this way in the Fall when we have a big Fall trade you will have new babies to trade ! And your plants will also be mature enough to trade leaves !
Two years ago I had not plants and I bought a hundred leaves from BloomLovers and it started there.
I just keep putting leaves down from all my plants and any people send me ! In two years I've been able to share thousands of named Afrcian violets !
But we all started with no plants . Just some patience and lots of love and good care you will have a lot of babies and blooming plants soon !
Allison,
Can't believe you just started two years ago!! That's amazing. You know so much about them I figured you had been growing for ages.
No. I've always had plants here and there but always worked a lot.
Then a couple years ago I saw them on Ebay and bought three. And I liked them so much I kept buying them , trailres, and Streps , even my first Begonia and my Alsobia Cygnet the same plant I'm still growing and sharing from. I bought them from one seller.
Except when I saw a Flame violet in a book. Two years this May/June I bought Aussie Alice. She shows no bounderies and have shared her with dozens of people.
Then I looked up AV sales/shows on the AVSA web sight and joined a local group and learned a lot then !
I also got the AVSA Magazine and FC and read many AV books and learned more. And I read and experiment and learn more everyday ! It took me about six months or more to get both stands and all light fixtures.... They are expensive when you don't have much so I got one at a time sometimes 2 :)). I never thought I'd grow by leaf. 9-12 months for a blooming plant. Gosh a long time I'd be dead by then. lol But after my first free leaves I was so proud of my baby there was no stopping me. I put leaves down from each plant I get and own. Each new baby has given me more joy each one is more exciting . A new life ! I've grown thousands of different varieties to share :)) I always buy the best leaves/or plants to tear apart to grow and share. I search for rare, fun interesting, different looks . I like to grow a lot of Vintage and share hoping people I share with will put leaves down and share with others keeping them growing and not pushed to the side and lost.
I'm so Blessed to be given the opportunity to grow African violet babies to share, and have pretty cheery flowers surrounding my home all year round :))
I could not think of a better joy :)) A joy so easy to share with friends all around the World :))
Allison,
If you ever have any Aussie Alice to spare, I would love to have a leaf or two. My husband is from AU and came to the states 5 years ago to marry me. That would be so great if I could present him an AV with that name.
Jesse
Jesse, I didn't see any catalogs at the show by the way. Sorry. BUT I did get to look at the Lyons Catalog, my friend that went with me brought it to share.
Thanks for looking for me. That was really nice of you to do that. I guess I will have to look at them online.
Jesse
Allison,
I would love to have one very much. Thank you. I think those are beautiful.
Jesse
Great ! It's one of my favorite. She can grow realy big even in pan pots or hanging baskets. And she will have babies like a Spider plant does you can root easy within a week to grow more plants !
Oh Allison, this sounds so exciting. I have seen some of these on Rob's Violets and have wanted one for a long time. Thank you so much.
Jesse
Morning Allison,
Beautiful Episcia's!!! I love the pink and red ones the best!
TFS!
Joanne
Good Morning Joanne :))
Thank You !
Jesse I will send you one soon :))
Have a wonderful day :))
Allison
Thanks Allison. I really do appreciate it.
Jesse
No, you did not send me Alsobia Cygnet. And Teddy Bear and Grey Lady sound like they would be really nice ones too. I have been so happy since I met all of you and started growing african violets. And when those leaves make new babies, it just get so excited. I was in Lowe's yesterday and I started talking to one of the customers there and we talked and talked and I told her about DG and how I was learning to grow the AVs by using just a leaf and she got really excited over hearing this. I gave her the addy to DG and maybe one day she will come join us. I do this all the time when I go to the garden section of stores. It makes me so happy to tell other people about what I'm doing and how great you guys have all been to me by teaching me all the things that you have about growing the babies and about how to take care of all of them and the mature ones too. I am usually a very shy person but because I've learned so much, it makes me confident to share with others what I have learned. Of course I have had the best teachers. I could never have done this without all of you guys. Thanks so much.
Jesse
Jesse You are such a wonderful person !
Usn't growing by leaf so much fun ! Everyone should try it once !
It gives me much joy I can;t find enough words to say growing and sharing with you all !
If it was not for my plants I'd surely lie in bed 24 hours a day. They are life each new baby is SunShine and joy shared all around Joy world,
I will send you a box of all those plants soon ! Their pretty good size. I think you and your husband will enjoy them !
I am sure we will Allison. I am also disabled so I can't do as much as I would like to. I am also Bipolar and Borderline and I can tell you all that if it were not for my plants, especially my AVs, I would do the same thing, just lay in bed all the time. Sometimes my depression can get so bad but seeing a new little baby really does help. I have heard that growng plants can be very theraputic and I totally agree. Coming here and being with all of you has really been a blessing. In fact, when I went to see my therapist on Monday, guess what we talked about? African Violets. She has one in her office and she said she is growing it with one of her clients. So even the people in the Mental Health field are seeing the rewards of growing plants, especially ones that make babies. I took my AVSA magazine and she looked thru it with me and we had such a great time. And speaking of the latest magazine, I almost flipped over Rob's Whippoorwill. I would love to have one of those. Isn't it beautiful?
Jesse
