Part 2: New Clematis Nursery in the Garden Watchdog!

Orange County, NY(Zone 5b)

Shirley, thanks for the welcome to the forum and the warning about the sweet autumn :- ) I have a lovely neglected section of fence with a run of about 50 feet in my back field where I plan to let it have its way. I just hope I can make it happy.

I just had to jump in on all this talk about Princess Di. I never thought I would like the texensis varieties. Last year I welcomed Comtesse de Bouchaud into one of my gardens, but I discovered was that the lovely lady was actually Princess Di incognito (mislabeled). What a happy accident. I love this plant. She was a tireless bloomer the first year, and this year the new growth is amazing. The best of all my clematis breaking dormancy this year. Thus my new love affair with the texensis. I can't wait to see my new rooguchi from SSV in bloom!

It sounds like S.A.C. will be perfect on your neglected section of fencing.

Sometimes plants are mislabeled and you have happy accidents, which is the case with Princess Di. I hope she performs beautifully for you!

Rooguchi, another small flowering, but very charming Clematis can be slow to establish, so do be patient. I know with time it will reward you with lots of blooms.

My Princess Di I got from SilverStarVinery bloomed her flowers are like little bells and such a pretty color..I just might have to order another one from Debbie..!!

Your Princess Di is blooming already? Fantastic!! Let's see some pictures!!!

I don't have a camera..but I'm looking for one I can manage with just on and off...Di even has more blooms sprouting..Charles has a few on him...I think they both need a bigger trellis at the rate their growing...

You might want to check e-Bay for cameras. Sometimes you can find a good deal.

That's wonderful that both Princess Diana & Prince Charles are blooming at the same time. Well planned!

Yestrerday I bought 'Violet Elizabeth' and 'Asao'. Very nice healthy plants. I got them at Rice Creek Gardens. Not a mail order nursery.

I second the pictures request. Let us see the nostalgic royal couple.

I'm not really worried about this yet, but I planted 5 clematis Wednesday night and Di and Elsa aren't looking too hot. The green leaves look like they are dying. I was wondering if I planted too deep. Chuck, Ramona and the VV look great. I know it sometimes takes a while for the clematis to set in, but I guess I was expecting all these plants from Debbie to just take off with what everyone else has been saying. Is it possible to plant too deep? It looked to me like that's where the noids were, so that's where I planted them.

I always worry about how deep do I plant this or that, dh usually helps me and always says it needs to be deeper and I say no that is too deep. So far between the two of us it works out right. Some day we won't get it right I am sure. I bought an 'Asao' on Friday to take the place of the 'sugar candy' that had died. When I went to plant today guess what the 'sugar candy' had sent up a new shoot. Now I have both.

beaker_ch: Did you contact Debbie to let her know about Princess Diana & Elsa Spath? It could be transplant shock. As long as the root system looks healthy, I wouldn't worry. Just trim off the leaves that look like they have wilted. It may take them several weeks to get readjusted to your growing area. Just keep watering them and you should see new vines developing fairly soon.

zenpotter: Hi! Welcome to the Vines & Climbers Forum!! That's great news that you purchased 'Violet Elizabeth' and 'Asao'. I'm not familiar with 'Violet Elizabeth', so I'm really looking forward to seeing pictures. I love 'Asao'. I have that one growing in my garden too. Great news about 'Sugar Candy'. Some Clematis are slower to get established than others. I have a couple of "no-shows" too. I'm going to give them another season to grow before I declare them goners.

I was so glad that 'Sugar Candy' made it I really like it.
