Lincoln Park, MI(Zone 5a)

Thanks everyone..sorry no camera but they are doing great..all that crying for nothing..he did me a favor.. :o)))
I got my Clematis from Debbie at SliverStarVinery..her's are the BEST..plus she sent me instuctions and her packing was excellent...I sure will be ordering more from her..now to just find room for more..

So happy to hear that C. Nellie Moser is coming back stronger than ever! Hope she'll reward you with LOTS of flowers!

Glad you were happy with the Clematis you just received from Silver Star Nursery! Just wait until you plant them in your garden and they take off like a rocket!

REMINDER: Clematis are heavy feeders. Get them off to a good start by fertilizing them this month. They love Rose food, tomato food, or Osmacote.

Lincoln Park, MI(Zone 5a)

II bought some of the messenger and mighty plant from co-ops..So I sprayed all my Clematis with it..They are all doing great and the two my son cut down have alot of new growth...

Loretta...

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

I just sprayed my Clematis and other plants with Messenger & Mighty Plant too. It's always best to prevent diseases, instead of having to treat the problems!

Glad to hear that Nellie Moser is doing well. I had a feeling that it probably would! Looking forward to seeing it in bloom very soon!

Lincoln Park, MI(Zone 5a)

Shirley is it OK to mix the two??I read both packets and it does'nt say..I don't want to over do it..

Loretta..

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

their freq. asked questions says you don't need to use both. it also says MP can be used as a root drench or as foliar spray, which is the way I'm going since 20 packets would last me 2-3 applications of all I want to make grow.

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Personally, I don't like to mix anything together. I never know what would happen if I did. Plus, if you use the products separately, they will last you longer.

What is Messenger and Mighty Plant? I've just become a Clematis Fanatic the past few years and I've never known what to feed them. I'm sorry to say that all the Clematis I have came from WaySide. They are alive, but are just now putting on a few blooms this year. Will take a few pics.

I think it was in the other thread, but someone had ask about a color with red roses. Will Goodwin is awesome with red roses!!! I'll get a pic up tomorrow.

I just joined this site a few days ago and OMG am I in trouble!!! Now off to Debbie's site!!!

Welcome to the garden. you will find lots of very friendly people here who know a lot about clematis. Debbie is great and will treat you like she has known you all your life, I can't say enough good things about her and her plants, they are the best around.

Gary

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Thanks for the welcome Gary!!!

I went to Debbie's site and I can't decide what to get!!! Has anyone grown Crystal Fountain?? Also, I have Rose Flutterbye(pic below) coming next week. Can yal recommend a Clematis from Debbie that I could plant to grow in the Rose?

I use Bayer Advanced All-in-One Rose and Flower Care on my roses. Can I use that on my Clematis? You use 4 TBS in a qt of water for 1 Rose every 6 weeks. If you think that's ok for Clematis, how would you use it?

I got the Princess Diana and Prince Charles from Debbie and could'nt believe the root system and so many vines coming up from them..You get what you pay for and hers are the best...I have bought from Wayside and have 3 dead bareroot Clematis...I've done everthing to get them to grow and still nothing ,I would have to be a miracle worker to get them to grow and that I'm not...

Loretta..

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

Cool. I also have Princess Di and Prince C or order from Debbie. Can hardly wait til they get here.

I have two clematis that I got from Wayside last year and both are doing fine. However, they weren't bare root. Ruutel. They were just itty bitty things and I don't expect too much from them this year, but quite healthy. I've never really had a bad experience with Wayside. I think they are way over priced for what you get, but if I couldn't find it elsewhere, I'd buy from them again. I just got two alstroemeria from them that came yesterday and they look real good.

Andrews, NC(Zone 6a)

Has anyone heard from Shirley she hasn't posted in a few days hope's she's Okay.

Gary

Lincoln Park, MI(Zone 5a)

I hope Shirley's just busy planting...I'm sure you will be happy with the Princess Di and Prince Charles from Debbie at SilverStarVinery...Now I'm thinking I should have put a larger trellis at the rate their growing...She was the smaller of the two and now she's passed him up and strutting her stuff, she already has 3 blooms on her...I did use Messenger on them now I'm a strong believer in their products..plus I watered the roots with Mighty Plant before I knew I did'nt have to use both...I still like SprayNGro too..I'm gonna do a test on some of my other Clematis and see what results I get..!!I will let you all know how they did...

Loretta...

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

I'm assuming they haven't bloomed yet. I'm anxious to see how the blooms look together. Supposedly, Princess Di is significantly smaller than P Charles. Wondering if a second Princess Di is in order to make up the difference. Any excuse will do....

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Hi guys, I'm back! I've been out-of-town several days and just got in. I didn't even unpack yet and had to check out the forums on DG! If that isn't true dedication!

Welcome Debbie (baja220) to DG and the Vines & Climbers Forum! It wonderful that you've joined us and we look forward to seeing all your beautiful Clematis and other vines too! I attached the websites below for "Messenger" and "Mighty Plant", so you can read all about these wonderful products. I have also used the "Bayer Advanced All-in-One Rose and Flower Care" on both my Roses & Clematis. That's one of the reasons that I like to grow these two plants together. I am alternating using "Messenger" & Mighty Plant in my spraying cycle. Clematis & Roses can be sprayed with these products for disease control, fertilizer, benefit tremendously in terms of their overall health/resistance to diseases, vitality, vigor, and increase in blossoms.

I haven't received "Crystal Fountain" yet either. Most likely it will be sent in the Fall once the root system is developed enough.

"Flutterbye" is a beautiful old garden Rose! I would choose a dark pink or pinkish red Clematis with this Rose. You might even consider a deep dark purple Clematis too. I like to use a lot of contrasting colors together and play light & dark values off each other. Since it is your garden, you should choose what ever color combinations are most pleasing to YOU!

I'm really Happy that everyone has been please with the vines they received from Debbie. I got a e-mail from her that someone (didn't say who) was unhappy with their vines and her and had said some unkind things about her on other sites. That blows my mind since I have only received the most healthy and largest root systems on plants from her. Oh and not to mention how great her response and e-mails are. Goes to show you can't please all the people all the time. LOL

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

I wish I could make up my mind on what I wanna get from her so I can hurry up and get em!!! From the pics I've seen, they will be giants compared to what I've received through other companies.
Does anyone have a Clematis that's a true red?
Shirley, my Clematis and Roses aren't planted close enough together to benifit from the fertilizer. With my Bayer All In One, how would mix it for the Clematis? I think I'll give the Messenger and Mighty Plant a try. Use the Bayer ervery 6 weeks and then the M&MP 3 weeks later????

Lincoln Park, MI(Zone 5a)

I'm so happy with my plants from Debbie at SilverStarVinery.Cheaper is not always better,it's quality that counts with me.Not quanity..Mine already have grown sooo much and are getting blooms...Her CLEMATIS speaks for itself I can't believe someone would bad mouth her plants...I want more just gotta find some room...and yes I will order them from Debbie...She proved herself to me...I will be a repeat satisfied customer with her..!! :o)))

Loretta...

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Oh I may be in trouble yet again.... I have one clematis and a big bare fence so I'm off to check out Debbie's site since I have heard nothing but good things from her....Just ordering one,....or two. :) Lauri

Schererville, IN(Zone 5a)

Order 2, Lauri!! :-)

Andrews, NC(Zone 6a)

Lauri you won't be disapointed with the one's you get from her. The Princess Diana I orderedalmost a month ago has 23 buds on it.(I counted)LOL.

Gary

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

I'm so jealous. I won't even get my order until mid-May...sigh...

Did Debbie mention what other sites? Just curious. Once in awhile I see a post that makes me think, that person is in the nursery business. Not anyone who posts on a regular basis, but just once in awhile. The first time I noticed this was in the Watchdog. I was reading about some site that was getting quite a few negative hits and then all of a sudden, on the very same day, 2 positives. I remember thinking at the time that the info sounded phony and that the business owner probably had multiple memberships and was trying to encourage more business. I'm probably being paranoid....

I guess the point I'm trying to make is, with all the good pulbicity Debbie has been receiving from this forum, maybe there's a competitor out there trying to get back some of their business.

Lincoln Park, MI(Zone 5a)

beaker..I see what you mean, all I know is I could not believe the roots on Debbies Clematis..Her plants speak for themselves I can't believe how much mine have grown yet have buds on them...What ones did you order??I'm thinking maybe your right I do NEED another Princess Di...No need to feel paranoid I think YOUR RIGHT..!!I have ordered from several companies and hers are the best...Can you tell I'm a satisfied customer of hers??I'm sure you will be too...Let me know when yours arrive and tell me what you think...TIA..

Loretta...

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

100% POSITIVE FEEDBACK on Silver Star Vinery (and Debbie)!!!

Andrews, NC(Zone 6a)

Debbie Didn't say which sites or who it was and I didn't ask. Your probably right about the other companies. I ordered from another company and the vine or lack of it they sent was a joke. Will never do that again. Debbie has my loyality.

Gary

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

I have 4 coming from Debbie; Di and Chuck and Elsa Spath and Ramona.
LOL, sounds like a party list! I'll have to also invite Will Goodman and Ernest Markham. Mrs Bateman will already be here. She hangs out with Nellie Moser. I believe even Pope Paul John II will show up.

Serious question. When you plant 2 clematis together, do you plant them side-by-side or front-to-back?

Another question. Where I intend to plant Princess Di and Prince Charles is on a chain link fence that faces an alley. This fence faces the east, so will get morning sun and there is no plant life on the other side of the fence; just cement driveway. Do I need to do something to protect the roots from the backside?

Andrews, NC(Zone 6a)

LOL beaker sounds like a party I want to come to!!!

Willis, TX(Zone 8b)

Breaker..when planting two clematis together you should give them at least a couple feet apart to allow their rootsystems to have their own space and thrive...I have had people say that when they plant them too close together they can choke each other...would love to hear others opinions on that subject..as far as planting the ones at the fence..if you are planting them at a slight 45 degree angle AWAY from the cement driveway which will have the nodes pointing towards your chainlink fence then the roots will be growing AWAY from the cement which is a good thing..make sure and plant it 2-4 inches deeper and put some nice bonemeal in the hole to aid it in helping to develop a better rootsystem..good luck!!...Jeanne

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

beaker_ch: It sounds like you've got a lot of great Clematis comin' to your party! Can't wait until they "show"!

Place them several feet apart side-by-side and plant as described in Jeanne's post above. Besides the bonemeal, don't forget to amend your hole with compost and manure too. Water well until they are established.

Lincoln Park, MI(Zone 5a)

Shirley my Princess Di and Prince Charles that I got from Debbie are both doing great both have blooms and have tons of new sprouts...She has a few thats gonna open any minute now...I can't wait I've looked at them 1000 times almost like watching paint dry...

Loretta...

Orange County, NY(Zone 5b)

Shirley, thank you so much for sharing Silver Star Vinery with us.

I received my order from Debbie on Thursday, and am embarrassed to say that I just unboxed and potted them up this morning. Everything was healthy as could be though. I used 2 gallon containers for the most part and wish I had one a little bigger for the etoile violette -- a monster. Debbie also threw in a lovely little baby Sweet Autumn for me. I could not have been more pleased. It is inconceivable that someone could possibly complain about this nursery or Debbie. Now I need to get digging permanent homes for this wonderful order:

2 Kiri te Kanawa
2 Rooguchi
2 Pillu
2 Silver Moon
1 Etoile Violette

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Loretta: I'm thrilled for you!! Waiting for Clematis to burst forth from buds is a lot more exciting than watching paint dry....at least it is for me!

Prince Charles is a beautiful Clematis, but I find Princess Di even more charming! Its something about the texensis varieties. I love their vibrant colors and delicately shaped "tulip" flowers. My goal is to purchase every variety of Texensis available in the U.S........ Well, why stop there when there are so many varieties of Clematis to choose from?? :~)

Irishbelle: Welcome to the Vines & Climbers Forum! We're happy that you joined us! I'm delighted that you bought so many gorgeous Clematis at Silver Star Vinery! Now the true fun begins....waiting to see those magnificent flowers!

Sweet Autumn Clematis should be sited VERY carefully. It will be a huge vine that can grow at least 15ft. tall! Take a look in Plant Files to see for yourself.

Hope to see you posting a lot more in this forum in the future!

Lincoln Park, MI(Zone 5a)

Shirley I was just kidding..but I'm so anxious to see her open...Do you have her???

Loretta..

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Loretta: I know, I'm just playin' with you.

Are you asking if I have Princess Di? I love this Clematis. Hopefully, she'll have a lot of blooms this year.

surfside beach, SC(Zone 8b)

Shirley
Thanks so much for the link to this nursery.I also love the texensis and planted Princess Di last Fall.I like to plant Clematis in the Fall and I plan to order quite a few.

Lincoln Park, MI(Zone 5a)

Is it better to plant them in the fall? Here I get lots of snow and zero temps so I'm afraid they would die before they could root good...I got the Princess Di from Debbie also she's really doing great...and waiting for her to bloom...You can't beat Debbies Clematis she proved herself to me and.I'm seeing her results and am VERY HAPPY..!! :o)))

Loretta...

surfside beach, SC(Zone 8b)

I like to plant in the Fall.Hot weather around here comes on very suddenly.I don't think that Fall planting is better than Spring planting but for me to plant now would be pushing it.I have been out planting all kinds of plants since February.

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Loretta: You're fine planting out in the Spring because you live in a colder climate.

Gardeners who live in warmer climates need to be very vigilant and water frequently, so their vines and other plants don't dry out. Our Summer time temps can be extremely hot!

Denver, CO

I think that is why it is said that Clematis like cool feet. Growers who use black pots that get up to 100 degrees in soil temperature say otherwise, so I deduce that Clematis simply don't like to dry out, rather than "cool feet"! Mulch is a must here in the high desert, when we have 15% humidity and 105F for a few weeks in the summer.
