Need an ID for a new baby

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

I probrably spent too much on this one but I couldnt leave it there by its little lonesome, plus it has a bunch of babies. The leaves are pretty thick and sturdy and stand up instead of hanging down. Please excuse my messy floor. LOL

Tried to get a decent pic of the stems, hope you can see them ok. The coloring is actualy darker than the photo shows.

Look at all the babies. A great plant. Maybe Brian will happen on to this thread he can usually identifly things.

Ocoee (W. Orlando), FL(Zone 9b)

What a great alocasia....nice to find a healthy one so early in the season!
:)

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks guys, I bought this at a small nursery that I go to once in a while, they usualy have something that makes me go OOOOOO, so I try not to go there too often or I would really be broke.

Barnesville, GA(Zone 7b)

Looks like alocasia 'African Mask'. I've had one several years now. It does not do well indoors over the winter for some reason. Several springs I've thrown it into the compost pile only to have it "spring up" again healthier than ever. Drag it back in over the winter and it dies on me again........LOL. Paul James always has a healthy one he brings out every spring and I've often wanted to ask him how he does it.

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Not an african mask, I have one of those that is much smaller. This one is still young and the tallest leaf is about 3 feet high. Sorry about the African Mask on the right being fuzzy but it was wiggling because I had to hold it up next to the other leaf.

Yes, it's too bright of a green to be African Mask, Polly, or Purpley....I think I used to have one of these, so let me look through my old plant markers and see if I can recall the name...

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

It looks to me like longiloba but the leaves sticking up sort of have me confused. I'm sure someone will give the name and I'll duh myself.

Ocoee (W. Orlando), FL(Zone 9b)

Could be Bako Park or White Knight, I'm leaning closer to White Knight. Of course, just a guess.....

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

LOL, the upright leaves are whats driving me nuts too. But dang this thing is pretty, cant wait for it to grow up some more.
Im gonna go check out longiloba but if thats not it I really pray someone comes in and can name it(crossing fingers big time)
Oh and dont worry, I duh myself all the time, LOL.

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

going to look now Merry

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

I really stink at googling, Im gonna go look some more after I get my rug rat outa the tub.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

What color are the backs of the leaves?

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

same color but a little bit lighter and you can easily see the pattern of the veins

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Oh, I believe longiloba has purple backs. Hmm, back to guessing. LOL

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

According to Agristarts, the backs of White Knight are purple too. hmph

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Where the heck is Brian?!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Playing with his pollen.....

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

LOLOL, I guess I really shouldnt just wonder where Brian is, Ive seen so many people be able to pop in and go, Oh, its a whositwhatsits.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I don't think this one is whositwhatsits. Just a guess. :)

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Maybe a Whatsamajigger, wait thats a drink right?

Ocoee (W. Orlando), FL(Zone 9b)

Hey....everytime Brian plays with pollen, I end up with something wonderful for my yard! What a work-a-holic the guy is, and we all get to benefit every time he creates something new! Springtime is work time, so I'm sure he's very busy, but trust me, he's lurking and will respond soon....He's like Batman, once the Bat-call goes up, you never see him but he just swoops in and answers the call.
;)

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Well, if your yard gets full, can you start buying for mine?? LOL My greenhouse is so full I can't drag my fun plants out of the garage to warm them up! Now I have to build a bigger greenhouse.....

I got it! It's thingamabob!! Or possibly Alocasia sendtochelius. :)

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

I seriously doubt its a sendtochelius but I should double check, I mean remember all the babies in the pot and those sendtochelius' are notorious baby makers........DUCKING AND RUNNING.

Chele you know that as soon as it gets warmer out Im gonna split this thing up and repot it, your more that welcome to one or two babies.

Ocoee (W. Orlando), FL(Zone 9b)

Badseed....let me know what you have, send a Dmail or whatever, I'm always looking for alocasia, colocasia, xanthosoma, canna, and caladium.
Tropicals are my "thing".....
I'm weak that way....
:)

Foley, AL

LOL yall are too funny... alocasia sendtochelius, I have several sp. of that. esp in colocasias, I also have a. sendupnorth

ely

Foley, AL

marry , my package to you is going out tomorrow or the next,

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Hi Ely, any ideas on what this could be at all? This is starting to drive me up a wall, see I said starting to not driving up already, LOL. Cuz Im busy running from Chele...

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

Draven, congrats on the new unknown. It looks like a great plant. At first I thought it was an African Mask too. Hope you can ID it.

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks, the nursery said they had it for a long time. Ive tried googling for just alocasia but nothing, if the leaves looked right they were facing the wrong direction and vice versa, sigh.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I guess I would have to agree the sendtochelius are quite fertile. This is a good thing. And here you were trying to goad me, now weren't ya?? Ely, tell her it is indeed a sendtochelius! It must be!! I do so like the Colocasia sendtochelius too! Those have been my favorites for some time! And A. sendupnorth, well we accept those too!

Geesh, I don't even have to say the trip up the wall would be short!

Merrymary, at the moment my greenhouse is packed full of interesting annuals and promising daylily seedlings which means my garage is full of pots that look like dead stuff. I need to make room to heat up all my brugs, ears and bananas but that won't happen until I build another greenhouse. I'm shopping set ups now. :)

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

heeheehee

You know Chele, when you get your other greenhouse set up we will never see you again and I can see it now, the girls will be taking cold water showers from then on too because the water hose will be the closest thing to you. I don know if I want you to get another GH, unless you can waterproof your puter.

Louisville, KY

I see the Bat signal is up.

It is Drum role please. Alocasia Sarian A bit of confusion on if this is a true species or a hybrid made by a Doc made in I blieve sigapore? Still not completely possitive on it's back ground but Sarian is the name used for years on it. This is a large growing plant. It does look like white knight a lot but white knights leaves will point downward and does not get near as large.
here is a picture of a mature plant.

Thumbnail by bwilliams
Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Wow but Bat signals are the coolest thing ever! OMG and look how big that baby is, woohoo.
Im looking at the stems in your pic, does this mean that the stems loose their unique coloring when they grow larger or is it because the pic isnt close up that my blind ol' self cant see it?

Thanks Brian!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

NO SHE DID NOT! Tell her it's something else. LOL

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

No she did not what?!

Louisville, KY

It does keep some stripping to the stems but it does fade a bit as they mature up close you see it but from a distance hard to make out. Their is another form out their but I only know two people growing it. It is extremely hard to tell apart form Sarian.

Thumbnail by bwilliams
Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

You do not have Sarian. It's icky. You better go ahead and send it to me before you kill it. ROTFLOL

Sarian is awesome. I've been looking at those. I think I saw them on Enids website last year and somewhere else. I was afraid to buy going into winter. I was also looking at the robusta and giganteum. So many plants, so little space.

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Brian, thanks so much for the info, I seriously doubt its the other form so sarian it is.

Chele, Ill take my chances on killing it, LOL, but you'll get a couple anyways.

Im gonna go to bed now guys, its getting late and im out of it.
