Spring bulb pics and talk: Part V

A little group pre-existing

This one has been by the tree trunk for years and not flowered. I think they were from a very close bunch that were by the path planted pre 1998 by the previous owners. I dug them up and left them on the ground, then mowed grass that was there at the time and accidentally chewed a few up, they got sucked in! The rest are these, one flowered last year but different, like the Pheasant's Eye. This looks very unusual, extrememly long trumpet, and the petals are delicate with a green stripe on both sides down the middle.

For the second year in a row, 'Replete' continues to disappoint me. The blooms always look smooshed and the color is not what I expected. This picture is actually flattering to it.

I have some too kb, free from T&M with an order (pay post only), they show them really pink and they are orangish, and a funny shape. Mine haven't appeared yet, I'm wondering if they have 'gone'.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Great pictures, wallaby! Love your Shakespeares.

kbaumle, I was disappointed in the performance of mine as well. They looked terrible last year and didn't even bloom this year. They bloomed for about three years and the colors looked terrible and then they vanished. Yours is quite pretty in the picture though!

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Wallaby mine was a very pale salmony color, not at all attractive. You're right - all of the catalogues make the flowers look much "pinker" than they are - in fact I have never seen a pink daffodil that is either a true pink or very attractive.

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

The way you both describe them is exactly how mine are. I hate them, really, but I won't get rid of them. They'll just get moved somewhere where I don't have to look at them as much. There are certainly more beautiful ones out there and worthy of that space in my gardens.

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Don't worry kb, they are self exterminating! Darned weather has taken a turn for the worst, cold winds and rain, cold for the next week! So many plans and so little time....

Anemone blanda filled up more, they look lovely when the sun shines through them. They don't seem to be as bright as usual, while other things are more colourful.

Steve I kept trying to convince myself they were turning a sort of pink, but as you say, a sort of salmon, not attractive in shape nor colour. No wonder they were giving them away!
I think mine have disappeared too, hopefully!

I am so pleased with the T Shakespeare though, they were a 'substitute' freebie, and up until now I have only just tolerated them. I am glad they have grown up, I think they are prettier than many others now!

lets have another one

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

wow so many postings & comments to make, don't know where to start.
Janet, the yellow double daff is so lovely, the one with the complicated center. I love T. shakespeare
annapet, your replete looks so pretty, while kylee, well, not so pretty. can't belive it's the same daff. meanwhile, mine haven't bloomed yet. annapet, those tulips, wow.
Kenton, I love dark eyes on ANY plant. very pretty

Mg has some tulips! Actually your Replete looks quite OK! Not pink but presentable.

Nice pics, your last red one looks a bit like Parrot tulip Rococco.

Nery the complicated centre one has a nice centre, but the petals seem to be a bit clumsy. I think these doubles have a lot of variation.

So many beauties, love them all.
I prefer one 'mixed' thread. This way I get to see things I might miss if it was divided.

Tabasco, Keep a log of what is blooming / when. Start now!
There are too many to 'remember'.
Most of the smaller bulbs multiply quickly, don't worry about them looking scattered, they will fill in in time.

thank you all. oh, gee - - - not replete, but ORANGERIE, perhaps because it's ORANGE. i have yet to see replete bloom then. i did have those markers on my plants, but my son loves playing with them. he's my little helper.

=)

Annapet, I'm so glad to hear that your 'Replete' isn't 'Replete,' because yours is so pretty!! I was wondering why mine looked so different.

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

My 'Tete-a-Tete' is now blooming. I planted a small clump last spring, from a pot from Walmart. The clump has doubled in size from what it was last year! :-)

wow, i love that. i promised myself i'll plant at least 200 daffs next planting season. just waiting for van engelen to open.

Northwest, OH(Zone 5b)

Oh, by the way, it's now safe to send brugs. *wink*

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

Are the 'Tete a Tete' on the small side? I think I have some somewhere, not blooming yet.
Here is a tight shot of an unknown variety I got at HD 18 months ago. Few blooms last year, fewer plants this year. BOOOH
I shot this very early today.

Yes, very tiny. Mine are about 4-5" tall. They're so cute!

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Look - I found a couple more peonies open today in the front yard....got HOT today, up to about 89.....

And Irises

Thumbnail by SteveIndy
Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Steve 89 is nearly unheard of here! The irises look unusual, do you know what they are?

kb tete-a-tete are such a rich colour aren't they? Some of mine haven't bulked a lot, but the ones I posted in a group naturalised well, they are in a dryish spot and only 3 or 4 bulbs originally. Some are only 4-6", but they have got to around the 10". Yesterday they were turning a really strong colour, i think the cold weather has had an effect on colour.

Andy how many did you take to get a clear one? The yellow is difficult! Great close up!

This one has pointed petals

Wallaby, I saw it as I went out to get the paper just after sunrise. I was in a rush, took 3 shots.
This is the original before I cropped/rotated it.

That's an interesting observation about the temps affecting the colour.
The dry Spring shortens the time for the Crocus here.
I'm watering all my bulbs gardens now, the season is too short as it is.

Tabasco, That looks a lot like mine, now the name?
Andy P

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

So sorry--no sure ID on these daffs...they are pretty though and are probably a common variety since they came from HD or Lowes or some other ordinary retailer...maybe n. 'Flower Record' in the first and n. 'Carlton' below...

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Wow tabasco the daff in the aconite is really impressive - gives the impression of a hufe yellow field!

Wallaby, not sure about the name - maybe Blue Magic? They've been in that spot a few years now.

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

Hi, t
We did make it out to the Cox Arboretum. yesterday. It was very nice, lots of spring bulbs blooming. A few magnolia trees too! I am planning on visting again later in the summer.
A few of my favorites are Ice Follies and the King Alford daffs. Lily tulips are nice. You cannot beat creeping phlox this time of year either. I wish it lasted longer.
